GRADUATION EDITION 2019 WOODRUFF HIGH SCHOOL VISIONS 4 WOODRUFF 3
In some cases students let their accomplish-ments do the talking, and this is true for Brendan Emm, Miriam Gomez, Christopher Meyers and Dayton Hines, our Wood-ruff High School Student of the Month recipients for February, March April and May.
Emm, the February Stu-dent of the Month, is the Salutatorian of the senior class with a 4.98 grade point average and re-ceived the Academic Ex-cellence Award for four years. He is not only rec-ognized for his academic excellence but also his volunteer service and ex-cellence in music. Emm has been a member of the concert band and the WHS Marching Cadets the last four years and is the Percussion Captain for the Woodruff band department. In addi-tion to his dedication to academics and music he also received the Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award for having over 100 hours of service and has been a member of Maroon on a Mission, the WHS community ser-vice club, for the last two years.
On the academic side Emm has been a mem-ber of both the Beta Club and National Honor Soci-ety for the last two years as well as being a Ju-nior Marshall and Junior Scholar his junior year.
It is not hard to find compliments for Emm.
“Brendan is a great stu-dent and service minded young man. As a member of Maroon on a Mission he has volunteered nu-merous hours,” said WHS math teacher Marcia Ed-monds. “On the second Saturday of every month when we volunteer at the local soup kitchen, he not only helps with picking up groceries and shelving food, he also uses his personal truck to haul off boxes to the dump. Brendan also vol-unteered last summer at the Woodruff Communi-ty Center summer camp to help with children’s activities. He is very fo-cused on his academics, but at the same time par-ticipates actively in the band.”
Next year Emm plans to study Chemistry at the University of South Caro-lina in Columbia where he was recently selected to be a band member in the drum line.
Gomez, the March Stu-dent of the Month, is also well-rounded in her pursuits. She is ranked 7th in the junior class with a 4.87 GPA while having a schedule full of advanced placement and honor classes. On the academic side, she has received the Academic Excellence Award for all A’s the last three years and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. On the fine arts side she was a member of the concert band for two years, is an AP Art student and she also placed third in the Young Women in Art Ex-hibition.
Her character and hard work are appreciated by her teachers.
“Miriam is an excel-lent student who has a very humble attitude and spirit,” said WHS history teacher Haley Lawson. “She puts forth effort in her academic life and is kind to everyone. I en-joyed teaching her this year.”
Outside of WHS she is also a lector at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.
Gomez is already look-ing to the future with a number of colleges un-der consideration and plans to study something in the fine arts field such as concept design or script writing.
Meyers, the April Stu-dent of the Month, is found in the top 20 per-cent of the senior class with a 4.4 GPA while participating in a variety of activities at WHS and having perfect atten-dance for three years.
Running has been a focus for Meyers during his time at WHS. He has been a member of the cross country team for five years, lettering four of them and capturing the Most Valuable Run-ner award his junior and senior years. He has also been a member of the track team for six years, lettering five of them while also being named the Most Valuable Dis-tance Runner three of them and being named the Region Runner of the Year his senior season.
In addition to his time on the track and in the classroom Meyers has stayed busy with stu-dent council and club ac-tivities. He was the Class Treasurer his junior and senior years and a mem-ber of the Chess Club for two years and the French Club for three years in
which he was the Trea-surer his senior year.
Praise for Meyers is easy to come by.
“It has truly been a pleasure teaching Chris-
topher in both biology and AP environmental science,” said WHS sci-ence teacher Clary Reich. “He is an incredibly in-telligent student who seeks to learn as much as he can, and has a great deal of knowledge about many things. I can’t wait to see where the future takes him!”
Meyers is looking for-ward to next year when he plans to attend the University of South Car-olina in Columbia and study computer science.
Hines, the May Student of the Month, rounds out our Student of the Month recipients. He is ranked in the top 25 percent of the junior class with a 4.2 GPA.
Beyond his hard work in the classroom, Hines ran track his first two years, has been a mem-ber of the wrestling team for three years captur-ing the Sportsmanship Award the last two, and ran cross country this season where he was voted the Toughest Run-ner. In addition to athlet-
ics Hines has also been a member of the WHS cho-rus since 8th grade.
His teachers appreciate having Hines in the class-room.
“Dayton is smart and friendly, and genuinely well-rounded,” said WHS English teacher Annie White. “He is one of the most hard-working, trustworthy, and basical-ly likeable students I’ve ever taught!”
Hines is already con-sidering which college he would like to attend. He is interested in Charles-ton Southern, Clemson and Presbyterian College and would like to major in mechanical engineer-ing with a minor in elec-trical engineering.
In honor of being named the Student of the Month Emm, Go-mez, Meyers and Hines received a certificate as well as being recognized on the WHS news show, and will be placed on the ballot for Student of the Year which is voted on by students.

Brendan Emm (back left), Dayton Hines, (back right), Miriam Gomez (front left) and Christopher Meyers (front right) were the last four WHS students selected to receive the Student of the Month Award for the 2018-2019 school year.
Woodruff High School senior Sierra Thoreson captured top honors by having her artwork cho-sen as the winning piece for the 4th Congres-sional District of South Carolina in the Congres-sional Art Competition. Thoreson’s intricate wood carving titled “No Space to Fly” will be dis-played in the U.S. Capitol for one year and she has been invited to go to the Congressional Art Re-ception on June 24th in Washington, DC where she will meet other win-ners from around the
United States.Thoreson’s talent and
hard work have been noted by many, especial-ly within WHS.
“Sierra has been a dedicated student in the art room for years. It is wonderful to see her exit Woodruff High School with this final acknowledgement to all of her time and ef-fort perfecting her skills and pushing herself to truly master her own ar-tistic voice,” said WHS Art teacher Samantha Brown. “I know that Spartanburg Methodist
College is lucky to have her next year and she will continue to display her excellence and rep-resent Woodruff High School at its best.”
Every year, members of the U.S. House of Rep-resentatives sponsor the Congressional Art Com-petition, a nation-wide high school art competi-tion. The Congressional Art Competition was founded in 1982 to allow members of Congress to create opportunities to promote engagement in the arts for the youth in their districts.
Thoreson Wins Congressional Art Competition
WHS senior Sierra Thoreson won first place for the 4th Congressional District of South Carolina in the Congressional Art Competition.
Woodruff High School ju-nior Kate Clark is one of the “best of the best” as she won a National Gold Medal in Illus-tration in the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Com-petition. Clark was awarded the honor for her painting “Chinese Meat Shop” and will attend the national events in New York City in June, including a national ceremony at Carnegie Hall with ap-pearances by notable celebrities and creative leaders.
All works go through a rigorous judging pro-cess at a regional and national level before winners are chosen by an impressive panel of creative-industry experts. The chance of getting in this show with the number of works en-tered is less than one percent.
The WHS community is very proud of Clark’s accomplish-ments.
“Kate has always been a
shy and artistic student, her growth in skill and confidence has shown noticeably this year. I am so proud of her and t h i s
accomplishment,” said WHS Art teacher Saman-tha Brown. “As I think about the hours she spent working on her winning piece, both in and out of the classroom, I know she has been awarded the recognition she deserves for all of her hard work. Kate
plans to pursue a career in art and I am sure that this is the first of many successes for her and her artwork.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s lon-gest-running and most prestigious recognition pro-gram for creative teens in grades 7–12. Within the Awards’ 29 cat-egories, which include poetry, p h o t o g r a p h y , sculpture, humor, editorial cartoons, and video game design, hundreds of thousands of works of art and
writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level this year.
In addition to her Gold Key winning painting Clark also received two honorable men-tions at a regional level in drawing and illustration.
