WHAT’S INSIDE this issue

Just a gentle reminder! We still need canned milk for the ICCM Foodbank. Bring it to the church of-fice entry and place it in the designated container. It will be collected and taken to the Foodbank. We need to supply 200 units a month. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Renewing waters: How United Methodists

understand baptism A UMC.org Feature by Joe Iovino*

Water is important to our life both inside and outside of the church.

Photo illustration by Kathleen Barry, United Methodist Communica-

tions. Water sustains life for humans, animals, and plants.

We clean with warm water and relax in cool water. We find

peace listening to the roar of the ocean or taking a stroll in the

rain.

Water is also important to our life in the church.

In the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, “we are initiated into Christ’s holy church, … incor-porated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit,” the Introduction to the Baptismal Covenant says. “All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.”

Former director of worship resources with Discipleship Ministries of The United Methodist Church the Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards explains, “Baptism is the ordinary means of rebirth and initiation into the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Our need for salvation

The Bible teaches that God made human beings in the image of God, and all of creation to be good. Sin caused a “distortion of the image of God in us and the degrading of the whole of creation,” By Water and the Spirit, The United Methodist Church’s official statement on baptism, reports.

In baptism, we reject the power of sin and begin our journey as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Renewing waters: How we understand Baptism

In January, we celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord. How much do you know about the

United Methodist understanding of the sacrament? This is a perfect time to reflect on the

meaning of our vow and this gift of grace.

PRAYER REQUEST LIST

Pastor’s Bible Study to Begin January 16

The pastor invites everyone associated with FUMC to join him in reading the bible every day of 2019. One of the char-acteristics of a faithful disciple is knowing and implementing what their Rabbi taught. And the only way to do that today is by mastering the Master’s text so that the Master’s text can master them. The re-source for the class will be the

The Daily Bible published by Harvest House Publishers. This bible has 365 daily readings that are in chronolog-ical order. You can stop by the office and review one if you’d like. The church is prepared to provide this bible for anyone who wants to participate in this en-deavor. If anyone is interested in purchasing their own, they can do so through the church for $16.00 each or by ordering online through their favorite book distributor. The pastor also has bibles available for free for anyone who is unable to purchase one.

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch with them in the beginning. The group may decide to have a light lunch catered instead of bringing one’s own for a nominal cost.

The Pastor’s Bible Study will take place every Wednes-day during the noon hour in the parlor. The first gath-ering will be Wednesday, January 16 at noon. Come expecting God to bless you and for God to use you and what you bring to bless others.

FUMC Launches Youtube Site! The church is beginning to add previous services and sermons to the church YouTube page. Just open your browser to www.youtube.com and search for Stuttgartfumc. On the cover—Ouachita National Forest

This is the perfect place of an Arkansas journey to have the windows

rolled down (weather permitting) and just take in the trees. The oldest

National Forest in the southern States, Ouachita National Forest cele-

brated its 112th birthday this past December and has aged quite grace-

fully. Take advantage of the pull-off points alongside the highway so

everyone can fully appreciate this beautiful view,
