OUR MISSION STATEMENT: A family of churches working together
in equipping and encouraging one another in fulfilling the Great Commission.
DIRECTOR OF MISSIONS—Dr. Robert E. Tyson, Sr.
What Does the Recent U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Mean to Us?
The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage is causing a lot of discus-
sion. Ministers and churches are wondering how the ruling affects them. Recent-
ly, I received a call from an insurance company saying we need to consider
switching to them because they can help protect us. There is fear, and some busi-
nesses want to play off our fears. So, what does the Court’s ruling really mean?
First, it confirms that our culture has changed and continues to change. We may
have suspected that we live in a post-Christian environment, but the U.S. Su-
preme Court’s ruling confirms it.
Second, we need to understand what the Court’s ruling means to the church and
its ministers. The decision was about establishing a civil right for same sex cou-
ples to be licensed by the states to marry. It was not about the First Amendment
or religious liberty, so the decision did nothing to diminish religious freedom. As
a result of the decision, rights and duties will be interpreted in federal and local
legislative bodies and laws, and exemptions will be enacted. However, our First
Amendment rights remain intact, and there is nothing imminent a church must do
to continue to secure those rights.
If a church wishes to be proactive at this time, then you might consider:
1. If you are incorporated, make sure your church’s charter and bylaws are up
to date and conform to the Tennessee nonprofit corporation act. This is al-
ways a good idea regardless of the recent ruling.
2. Look at your church’s governing documents, and consider provisions that
clarify polity and doctrine especially regarding same sex marriage. For ex-
ample, if your church has adopted the Baptist Faith and Message 2000,
which defines marriage as between one man and one woman, then it’s clear
where your church stands on marriage and the family. The church does not
have to do this to establish this as a core part of your doctrine, but if you are
concerned, you can.
3. Revisit your church usage policy for what is allowed and not allowed. Even
beyond the scope of this Supreme Court decision, it’s good to make sure the
policy is clear that the church facilities may only be used for activities con-
sistent the church’s polity and doctrine. Again, regardless of the recent deci-
sion, it is always a good idea to be clear about your church usage policy for
all potential usages.
4. Remember that the Supreme Court’s ruling is related to civil law (the 14th
Amendment) not religious liberty (the 1st Amendment). While civil authori-
ties are affected, our churches and ministers are not. Churches still enjoy
their First Amendment right of the free exercise of religion which protects
them from actions inconsistent with foundational theology, polity and doctri-
nal believes.

Supreme Court Ruling, Continued…
The greatest burden the court’s ruling puts on a church is for it to awaken out of its
spiritual slumber. As Christians, we are the only Bible that many people read. As
Christians, as churches, we must awaken ourselves to the paramount need to live and
proclaim the Gospel. The hope of a person, the hope of our nation, the hope for our
world is found in Jesus and Jesus alone.

will be split in half to wet our feet before jumping in. Yes, there is home-
work...about an hour a day, 5 days a week. It is well worth the time to learn
about our great Covenant God in whom our eternal salvation is assured.
