PRIMARY 5 NATIONAL EDUCATION SHOW The Primary 5 students attended the National Education (NE) Show at The Float@Marina Bay on 14 July 2018 and enjoyed a spectacular performance. During the NE Show, the students sang their hearts out to past and present National Day songs. They were amazed by the aerial flypast and display put up by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), in commemoration of RSAF’s 50th Anniversary. The students were also impressed with the traditional Parade ceremony that showcased the true discipline and resilience of the diverse communities in Singapore. What truly captivated the students was the dazzling display of fireworks at the end of the parade. Through the NE Show, the students were able to see how Singaporeans from all walks of life, regardless of race, language and religion came together to ensure the smooth running of the parade, in the true spirit of a Singaporean. It was truly a memorable and meaningful experience for all the Primary 5 students who attended the NE Show. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho and Ms Nur Atiqah RACIAL HARMONY DAY The theme for this year’s Racial Harmony Day was The Singapore Way and the school commemorated it through a series of activities from 10 July to 20 July 2018, in conjunction with the Mother Tongue Languages Fortnight. During assembly on 16 July, a talk was conducted to explain the significance of Racial Harmony Day and its importance to Singapore. As part of Racial Harmony Day in SACPS, students were encouraged to come to school dressed in different traditional ethnic costumes on 20 July. This helped our students grow in appreciation and understanding of the different races and cultures. The focus of the recess activities was on traditional games from the 4 major races in Singapore. Through the traditional games, the students had the opportunity to interact with one another. Besides playing traditional games during their recesses, the students also had a chance to dedicate different national and ethnic songs to their friends through a Song Dedication Booth. All in all, it was a fun and enriching experience for the students who learnt the importance of racial harmony in Singapore. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho

PRIMARY 3 LEARNING JOURNEY TO OH CHIN HUAT HYDROPONIC FARM The Primary 3 students went for a learning journey to Oh Chin Huat Hydroponics Farm on 30 and 31 July as part of their integrated Project Work. The students were given a short briefing upon arrival at the farm before a guided tour. The guides explained in detail the different stages of planting and the processes that occurred at the different stages of growth. Students visited the germination room, nursery greenhouse, hydroponics greenhouse, nutrient-mixing room and harvesting centre. They had a taste of freshly-harvested vegetables and also entered the cold room where harvested plants were stored before they are delivered to the retail outlets and commercial buyers. At the end of the tour, the guides demonstrated to the students how to carry out hydroponics using the hydroponics kits that were available at the farm. The students listened attentively as they would be growing plants hydroponically in school. Before leaving the farm, each student was also given two packets of hydroponically-grown vegetables for them to enjoy with their families at home. Through the learning journey, the students found out more about the operations in a hydroponics farm and the importance of this method of sustainable farming in land scarce Singapore. Written by Mdm Suzana Kamil VALUES-IN-ACTION (VIA) PROGRAMME PRIMARY 4 WORLD WIDE FUND (WWF) VIA Jumble Sale In exercising compassion for the environment, the Primary 4 students created posters to raise the awareness of the need to conserve Earth’s limited and precious resources. In addition, as part of their VIA project, they organised a jumble sale to raise funds for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Singapore on 6 July 2018. The students set up booths to sell pre-loved items and arts and crafts made from recyclables during the recesses. They managed to raise a total amount of $1399.40 through the sale which was donated to WWF. The Primary 4 students were not only successful in promoting the important message of reusing and recycling resources in creative ways, but also learnt the importance of teamwork through their VIA. FEAST OF ST ANTHONY St Anthony of Padua is the Patron Saint for the Canossian sectors in Singapore as we form the province of St Anthony in the Canossian Institute (global). The school had a Eucharistic celebration of the Feast Day on 28 June 2018. Friar Esmond was invited to celebrate the Mass and he shared with the students about how St Anthony was a true teacher who knew the word of God well. The students were reminded to live their lives like St Anthony by spreading God’s love through their actions and words. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho GLOBAL FORGIVENESS WEEK

In Term 3 Week 3, the school commemorated Global Forgiveness Week through a series of assembly talks and a classroom activity during their Pastoral Care lessons. Students were reminded that forgiveness is a choice and that only in forgiving others who have hurt us can we be free from the hurt, anger and pain. During the Pastoral Care lessons, students were asked to reflect on incidents in which they had hurt others or been hurt. Thereafter, they were asked to write a note of apology and a note of forgiveness. Through the activities, students learnt the essence of Forgiveness and ways they could exemplify the School’s Core Value of Forgiveness. Written by Mrs Perpetua Ho

PRIMARY 2 LEARNING JOURNEY TO THE SUPERMARKET As part of an integrated learning project by the English and Mathematics Departments, the Primary 2 students went on a Learning Journey to GIANT Hypermart on 10 and 11 July 2018.

Prior to the visit, the Primary 2 students had to come up with the ingredients and recipes needed to make sandwiches. They were actively involved in making decisions concerning the creation of their group’s sandwiches. Armed with that list of ingredients, the students went around the Hypermart in search of the ingredients they needed to purchase. As it was their first time buying items with their classmates, keeping the total cost within the budget was a challenge for some groups. After much discussion and compromise, the students were able to compare the prices of similar products and choose suitable ones without busting their budget.

Aside from buying the much-needed ingredients, the students carried out tasks that helped reinforce the concepts of the topic, Money. The visit to the Hypermart provided an authentic learning experience for the Primary 2 students as they could experience the use of money in their daily lives. Apart from that, they also learnt to choose healthier food items.

After the Learning Journey, the students worked in groups to make their sandwiches, following their own recipes closely. They showed creativity in the design of their sandwiches. Some students, for instance, used the ingredients to form a picture on the bread. They had a great time making and savouring their delicious sandwiches.

The students enjoyed their visit to the GIANT Hypermart as they were given the opportunity to be actively involved in the learning process and be independent at the same time. Most importantly, they also practised decision-making and problem-solving skills. Written by Mdm Evi

MULTIPLICATION CHALLENGE 2018 The Mathematics Department organised a Multiplication Challenge in Term 3 for the Primary 2 and Primary 3 students. PRIMARY 4 LEARNING JOURNEY TO SINGAPORE SCIENCE CENTRE The Primary 4 students visited the Science Centre in Term 3 Week 1. The learning journey caused much excitement to the students as they were able to see some of the insects that they had learnt in their textbooks come to life, up close and personal. They attended the workshop Insect Mysteries and got to experience how it was like to work in a Science laboratory. The visit provided the students with a chance to observe some creepy crawlies under the microscope and work collaboratively as a team to complete tasks assigned to them. It gave them firsthand knowledge of the many unique characteristics and adaptations of insects and their life cycles. The learning journey helped the students to understand the topic on Life Cycles better. Besides the workshop, the students viewed exhibits on optical illusions and understood how things might not always be the way they appear. They also managed to catch the largest Tesla Coil demonstration in Southeast Asia and were thrilled by the live demonstration of 3.5 million volts of electricity and intense bursts of lights and sparks. The visit had reinforced the students’ Science knowledge and concepts in a meaningful and engaging way. Written by Ms Sharon Yeo PRIMARY 5 FUN SCIENCE WORKSHOP In Term 3, the Primary 5 students attended a Fun Science workshop that was conducted over 3 Science lessons. With the help of the instructors and the aMatrix kit, the students learnt the topic Electrical Systems. Through hands-on experimentation with the aMatrix kit, students became versed in the basic components of an electrical circuit and how they could be connected. Their investigations also helped them to discover how different configurations of bulbs and batteries in series and parallel could affect the brightness of a bulb. Overall, the workshop gave the students an opportunity to have a deeper understanding on the topic Electricity in an active and self-directed manner. The inquiry-based experience also equipped students with the skills to critically analyze and solve problems related to the topic. Written by Ms Joey Low

PRIMARY 6 VISIT TO THE LEE KONG CHIAN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM (LKCNHM)

The Primary 6 students visited Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) on NUS campus in June and during Term 3 Week 1. The students were excited and enthralled to be able to view at close range and touch the specimens of plants and animals that were on display. The learning journey brought to life what they had learnt in their textbook on the topics Adaptation and Man’s Impact on the Biodiversity Around Them. The hands-on workshop and gallery walk allowed the students to appreciate the relevance of the Science concepts learnt as they could connect the theory with the actual specimens. They could see and better understand the structural adaptations of some animals like the Civet Cat, Dugong, Stingray and Crustaceans. The Singapore Sperm Whale exhibit gave the students the insights of the impact of littering such as plastic on the biodiversity in the sea. Examples of litter found in the stomach of the dead female sperm whale included plastic bottles. The students were awed by the museum’s 3 Diplodocid Sauropod dinosaur fossils that were on display. The learning journey was a memorable one which gave the graduating batch of students time to bond and work in groups. The visit had indeed enriched the students’ knowledge to a greater depth. The Science Department will continue to explore exciting and current ways to enrich the learning of our students beyond the classroom. Written by Mrs Alice Choo

WORLD WIDE FUND (WWF) OCEAN CONSERVATION TALK FOR PRIMARY 4 STUDENTS As part of the VIA project to raise funds for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Singapore, the Primary 4 students attended a WWF Ocean Conservation Talk in school on 11 May 2018. The main objective of this talk was to raise awareness amongst the students on the importance of ocean protection. Through the talk, the students learnt that ocean resources have been overly exploited and as a result, many critical habitats have been destroyed. They understood how corals and fish breeding areas require special protection, not just for their value, but also for sustaining human livelihoods and well-being. The talk taught the girls the role they could play in saving the ocean and other ecosystems. Written by Mrs Lotus Koh 5-STEPS MOZZIE WIPEOUT ROADSHOW BY NEA On 18 July, the National Environment Agency held a roadshow in the school to educate students on Dengue prevention.
