Dear Members,

Another year has begun. I thank the Board of Directors and the General Body for giving me the opportunity to take on the responsible job as the Secretary of our esteemed association. My predecessors have been steadily increasing the performance standards of our Association, making my job all the more challenging.

This year, we plan to try something new which we have been trying to achieve but have not happened. We want the members of the General Body to be a part of the sub-committees which actually run the organization. The Directors can only do so much, but with the time, effort and the planning of the members of the general body, we should be able to achieve a lot more. I would request you to join any of our many sub-committees which interest you so that you could be a part of this change. Remember, this is your organization which is trying to help your business, so you need to be a part of it.

We just concluded the training programme conducted by GIA on "7-Steps to a Sale " handling objections" and "How GIA Laboratory Grades Diamonds". There was a lot of positive feedback from the members who attended the programme. Please take these opportunities to attend such seminars and send your staff as the case might be. These are very informative and will help you in your business. We are planning some more interesting projects this year which will be announced at the appropriate time.

I once again thank you all for the trust you have shown in me.

Vivek B. Chand

Dear Members,

Season's Greetings and Best Wishes to all of you.

I am humbled and challenged with the new position of being the President. The experience as a Hon. Secretary, the post I had held earlier, was very enriching and I hope that this new position will also be the same.

The New Year has started with new challenges in the trade, which we will face head on. Our Association has been very proactive in its approach to various grievances and challenges of the trade. The Coral issue is being resolved with the concerned department. We are planning to get some legal consultancy with regard to the various departmental issues and have also added up various committees to expand the horizons and scope of our functioning. With more and more young blood being infused into the Board, I am sure our enthusiasm and energy will be multiplied. This synergy of energies can have an amazing outcome, provided the energies are channelized.

This is going to be a very eventful quarter with lot of activities lined up in the month of January 2012. The formation and meeting of the State Co-ordination Commitee, a CAREER FAIR with the GIA, inauguration of SAI VRINDAVAN - a home for the old age and differently abled children, to name a few. My earnest request to all the members is to get actively involved in all our activities and encourage us through their participation.

We have with us very dynamic Sub-Committee Chairmen, who are doing their best in their respective arenas, and who very firmly believe that -TOGETHER WE CAN. Am sure all of them have illustriously proved it. Karats and Carats, as the name itself suggests, is adding a lot of dimension, quality and branding to our Association.

I would like to use this opportunity to express my sincere gratification to the BOARD, for not only bestowing me with the post of a President, but also electing a wonderful team of Office Bearers who have made my position easy, comfortable and effortless.

Yours truly,

S. VENKATESH BABU

It's been more than a year since we started the Sai Vrundavan project where the Association and the members contributed to build a home for the Mentally Challenged Senior Citizens. Like many building projects, we too have seen cost and time over-runs. However, the building is finally reaching completion. We should be ready to inaugurate the building sometime in January, 2012 We would like all our members to take the opportunity to come

to the inaugural function (details will be sent). As we near completion, we find that we are still running a little short of funds. If any member would like to contribute, we would be very glad. All donations will get

the 80G Income Tax exemption benefit. Contributions above Rs.25, 000/- would be mentioned in the Donor List on the building.

This project would never have seen the light of day had it not been for the generous support of our members. Thank you.

Pranams to all,

It is no surprise that Gold, Silver and Diamond symbolizes wealth used wisely.

As a Jeweller, i feel that there is a need to know the historical originity of the words' Gold, Silver and, Diamond, and other related terminology which are often used in our trade. I have assorted a few interesting facts to your preview.

1) GOLD is a word derived from the old english word 'GEOLO' meaning yellow.and the latin word aurum is the origin of chemical symbol 'Au'.

2) SILVER is a word derived from sealfor meaning white and shiny.

3) DIAMOND is a word derived from the greek word adamos

meaning untamed, unbreakable, unaltered..All the qualities of adamos i.e being adamant in its nature is what defines diamond.

4) CARAT is originated from a greek word 'keration', which is a fruit of a carob tree in meditaranean region. The seeds of carob were used on precision scales as units of weight for small quantities of precious gemstones because of their uniform size.the weight of an average carob seed is 200mgs. The weight of one carat is precisely 200mg or 0.200 gms. Hence the name of carob seeds were used and gradually the keration seeds were called as carat.

It defines the weight not the size of a diamond

50 random facts About . . . Gold! By Y.S. Ravi Kumar, Sunrise Jewells

www.jab.org.in

33) Both Greeks and Jews begin to practice alchemy in 300 B.C. The search to turn base metals into gold would reach its pinnacle in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.a

34) In 1599, a Spanish governor in Ecuador taxed the Jivaro tribe so excessively that they executed him by pouring molten gold down his throat. This form of execution was also practiced by the Romans and the Spanish Inquisition.a

35) Venice introduced the gold ducat in 1284 and it became the most popular gold coin in the world for the next 500 years. Ducat is Latin for "duke." It is the currency used in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and is referenced in The Merchant of Venice. In his song "I Ain't the One," rapper Ice Cube sings that "he's getting juiced for his ducats." The ducat is also used in the "Babylon 5" sci-fi series as the name of the Centauri race's money.b

36) Originally the U.S. mint made $2.50, $10, and $15 coins of solid gold. Minting of gold stopped in 1933, during the Great Depression.d

37) The San Francisco 49ers are named after the 1849 Gold Rush miners.c

38) Gold and copper were the first metals to be discovered by humans around 5000 B.C. and are the only two non-white-colored metals.b

39) The value of gold has been used as the standard for many currencies. After WWII, the United States created the Bretton Woods System, which set the value of the U.S. dollar to 1/35th of a troy ounce (888.671 mg) of gold. This system was abandoned in 1971 when there was no longer enough gold to cover all the paper money in circulation.d

The world's largest stockpile of gold is five stories underground in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's vault 40) The world's largest stockpile of gold can be found five stories underground inside the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's vault and it holds 25% of the world's gold reserve (540,000 gold bars). While it contains more gold than Fort Knox, most of it belongs to foreign governments.f

41) The "troy ounce" of gold comes from the French town of Troyes, which first

created a system of weights in the Middle Ages used for precious metals and gems. One troy ounce is 480 grains. A grain is exactly 64.79892 mg.d

42) The gold standard has been replaced by most governments by the fiat (Latin for "let it be done") standard. Both Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson strongly opposed fiat currency. Several contemporary economists argue that fiat currency increases the rate of boom-bust cycles and causes inflation.d

43) The Mines of South Africa can descend as far as 12,000 feet and reach temperatures of 130 F. To produce an ounce of gold requires 38 man hours, 1400 gallons of water, enough electricity to run a large house for ten days, and chemicals such as cyanide, acids, lead, borax, and lime. In order to extract South Africa's yearly output of 500 tons of gold, nearly 70 million tons of earth are raised and milled.b

44) Only approximately 142,000 tons of gold have mined throughout history. Assuming the price of gold is $1,000 per ounce, the total amount of gold that has been mined would equal roughly $4.5 trillion. The United States alone circulates or deposits over $7.6 trillion, suggesting that a return to the gold standard would not be feasible. While most scholars agree a return to a gold standard is not feasible, a few gold standard advocates (such as many Libertarians and Objectivists), argue that a return to a gold standard system would ease inflation risks and limit government power.d

45) The first recorded gold ever discovered in the United States was was a 17-pound nugget found in Cabarrus, North Carolina. When more gold was discovered in Little Meadow Creek, North Carolina, in 1803, the first U.S. gold rush began.c

46) In 1848, while building a saw mill for John Sutter near Sacramento, California, John Marshal discovered flakes of gold. This discovery sparked the California Gold Rush and hastened the settlement

of the American West.c

47) In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 which outlawed U.S. citizens from hoarding gold. Owning gold (except for jewelers, dentists, electricians, and other industry workers) was punishable by fine up to $10,000 and/or ten years in

prison.d

48) Tiny spheres of gold are used by the Amersham Corporation of Illinois as a way to tag specific proteins to identify their function in the human body for the treatment of disease.b

49) The purity of gold is measured in carat weight. The term "carat" comes from "carob seed," which was standard for weighing small quantities in the Middle East. Carats were the fruit of the leguminous carob tree, every single pod of which weighs 1/5 of a gram (200 mg).b

50) Carat weight can be 10, 12, 14, 18, 22, or 24. The higher the number, the greater the purity. To be called "solid gold," gold must have a minimum weight of 10 carats. "Pure gold" must have a carat weight of 24, (though there is still a small amount of copper in it). Pure gold is so soft that it can be molded by hand.b

It is a known fact that innovation and creativity is the driving force behind the success of any business, and there is definitely no shortage of creativity in our Jewellery Industry. One sure short way to success in our industry is not to get even with our competitors, but to get ahead of our competitors.

The new trend in the industry now being colored gold, there is a much higher scope for creativity, and in turn to deliver the customer something new and different. Jewellery made out of colored gold makes the Jewellery very distinct and much more alluring to the eye of the beholder more than the usual yellow gold.

With the increasing demand for designer Jewellery in India and abroad this trend is soon catching up and becoming very popular.

Let us now see how this can be achieved with the combination of various alloys with gold. The following table shows the composition of different alloys with gold to create colored gold.

Gold will form alloys with most metals, but for jewelry, the most common alloying metals are silver, copper, and zinc. However, other metals may be added, especially to make colored gold. Here's a table of the compositions of some common gold alloys:-
