A roof prism features one surface that does not have total internal refl ection. It is very important for binoculars’ optical performance to raise the refl ectivity of this surface.

Dielectric high-refl ective multilayer prism coating, which is composed of multiple thin layers of transparent dielectric material instead of aluminum,

Refl ectance characteristics of prism coatings on mirror surface

or other metallic layers, assures uniform and ultra-high refl ectivity in full visible range.

As a result, this technique provides almost the same brightness as that perceived by the naked eye, and clear, high-contrast images that display accurate color reproduction.

both CompactFlash* and SD memory cards and allows photographers to designate the primary recording slot. For the slot designated as secondary, photographers can select from three recording methods: “Overfl ow” recording lets you use the memory capacity of the secondary card when the primary card is full, automatically; “Backup” recording stores the same images on both cards;

and “RAW primary, JPEG secondary” recording lets you record RAW data and JPEG data separately to each card. You can also copy images between the two memory cards. And when shooting D-Movie clips, it allows you to select the slot containing the card with the most available capacity.* Type I compatible only.

Engineered durabilityTested on fully assembled cameras, the shutter mechanism assembly has been proven for 150,000 cycles under demanding conditions. The ruggedly constructed D300S employs a strong yet lightweight magnesium alloy for its exterior cover, chassis and mirror box, as well as for the cover of the optional

Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10. The camera also offers comprehensive countermeasures at key points to combat invasive moisture and dust.

Easy-to-access Live View modeLive View function, activated by pressing the dedicated Live View button, makes it easy to shoot while composing on the LCD monitor.

In Handheld mode, which allows you to recompose the frame prior to actual shooting, TTL phase-detection AF using 51 AF points is activated. Tripod mode is designed for precise focus accuracy with still subjects. It allows contrast-detect AF on a desired point within a frame.

Quiet Shutter-release mode for nonintrusive shootingOne more advancement over the D300 is that by selecting “Q” on the release mode dial,

photographers can opt to substantially reduce the sound of the camera’s mirror-down during shooting. This is particularly useful when shooting in restrictive conditions such as when photographing wildlife.

Active D-Lighting for smooth tone reproduction in high-contrast lightingBy localizing tone control, Active D-Lighting accurately restores the details in shadows and highlighted areas which are often lost in high-contrast lighting situations. Simply choose the appropriate setting — auto, extra high, high, normal, low or off — prior to shooting. For further options that will help you achieve your desired tone, the D300S also allows you to bracket your pictures with varying strength levels, for up to fi ve frames, perfect for diffi cult lighting situations or if you don’t have the time or experience to select just one Active D-Lighting setting.

Picture Control: Customize the visual style of your imagesNikon’s Picture Control enables you to create the pictures you envision, quickly and easily, by making specifi c selections and adjustments to image sharpening, contrast, brightness, saturation

Extensive in-camera image control is available using Nikon’s Picture Control System, which allows users to customize key digital image characteristics to suit personal preferences. For additional creative control, the D3000 includes comprehensive in-camera editing functions via its Retouch Menu that enhance photos with a variety of effects – without the need for a computer.

Whether it’s grabbing point-and-shoot snapshots or exploiting techniques commonly used by more advanced photographers, the D3000 offers an easy, inviting way to experience the world of digital SLR photography and obtain beautiful pictures.

NIKON D3000 FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS

New Guide modeIn-camera guidance is provided by new Guide mode, which employs an easy-to-use interface that makes it easy for fi rst-time users to select shooting modes. Additionally, after selecting an item in Guide mode, camera settings can be further adjusted in order to obtain optimal results. (See diagram A).

Nikon DX-format CCD sensor; 10.2 effective megapixels

At 10.2 effective megapixels, the D3000 produces high-resolution images that enable beautiful enlargements without loss of sharpness. Normal ISO sensitivity is ISO 100 to 1600. For added shooting versatility, a Hi 1 setting increases sensitivity to ISO 3200.

EXPEED image processing systemThe D3000 is equipped with Nikon’s EXPEED image processing system. EXPEED realizes excellent

resolution, long tonal scale, and superb color while also making possible fast processing of the D3000’s advanced imaging functions such as Scene Recognition and Active D-Lighting.

Scene Recognition SystemThis feature improves accuracy for exposure, white balance, and autofocus by analyzing color and illumination over the entire scene milliseconds prior to shooting. It then adjusts the D3000 accordingly for optimal picture quality.

Active D-LightingThe D3000 incorporates Nikon’s Active D-Lighting function to vastly improve details in the shadows and highlights of high-contrast scenes. Like the Scene Recognition System, Active D-Lighting utilizes the 420-pixel RGB sensor to analyze a scene then adjust exposure to achieve images that closely resemble what the human eye sees. During processing, this function also restores details in the highlight and shadow areas of the image that may have been lost.

11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor moduleEmploying 11-point autofocus driven by Nikon’s Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module, the

D3000 delivers fast, precise focus over a wide area of the frame. Four versatile AF modes are available: single-point AF for stationary subjects, especially ones that are off-center; dynamic-area AF for moving subjects; auto-area AF when you want the D3000 to automatically determine the proper focus method; and 3D-tracking (11 points) AF for maintaining focus on subjects even if the composition changes.

3.0-in. LCD monitorImage playback and viewing menus is now easier than ever thanks to the 3.0-in., 230k-dot TFT LCD monitor. The large monitor also results in text size that is 20% larger than on previous Nikon digital SLR cameras.

Picture Control SystemThe Picture Control System of the D3000 gives users

the ability to customize key digital image capture characteristics to suit personal preferences. Six settings are available: Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape.

Diagram A

In-camera photo editingAfter shooting, the D3000’s photo editing functions allow for in-camera retouching, lessening the need for a computer to enhance or modify images. The D3000 introduces a new Miniature effect under its Retouch Menu that modifi es images to look like pictures of miniature models. Each editing function is applied to a copy of the image, with the original left unmodifi ed.

Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction SystemDust reduction is handled by the Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System. This is a comprehensive

solution that reduces generation and accumulation of dust and also provides measures to remove dust. A key element of the solution is the Airfl ow Control System, which directs dust away from the image sensor. The system also includes an image sensor cleaning function that activates automatically when the D3000 is powered on or off. This vibrates the low-pass fi lter (located in front of the sensor) to free it from dust.

Superb NIKKOR lensesThe D3000 opens up a wide range of possibilities for dramatic expression thanks to full compatibility with the extensive lineup of NIKKOR AF-S and AF-I lenses. From ultra wide-angle and micro to super telephoto, NIKKOR lenses give users the means to explore their creativity to the fullest.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

From my survey among most of my students, travel photography is arguably one of the most liked topics in photography. In itself, travel photography is also a specialization. From the above quotes, one can imagine how travel photography changes the lives of many people, especially their perception of what life is.

What exactly is travel photography? How do we defi ne travel photography? Do we simply just buy a ticket, fl y to some place out of the border of your country, take out your camera and snap whatever you see? Or for some, could it be merely snapshots of your loved ones with some famous mountains in the background? Can travel photography be defi ned?

Certainly it can be defi ned. Strictly defi ned and adapted from The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, travel photography is documentary record photography with a travel connection.

“The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes ‘sightseeing.’”

Daniel J. Boorstin. The Image:

A Guide to Psuedo-Events in America, 3.2, 1961

“A good traveller has no fi xed plan and has no intent on arriving.”

Lao Zhu

(Ancient Chinese Philosopher, c 604 B.C.)

“If it is better to travel than to arrive, it is because traveling is a constant arriving, while arrival that precludes further traveling is most easily attained by going to sleep or dying.”

John Dewey. Human Nature and Conduct:

An Introduction to Social Psychology, 4.1, 1992.

For example, it may record a journey, a travel experience, a place, which may include its people, a collection of items specifi c to a place, a culture in its natural state or an activity carried out at a place. The distance travelled to compile the portfolio is not important. The photography can be taken in any country in the world including Singapore. Manipulation by digital or other means, which SIGNIFICANTLY alters the truth of the situation or event, is unacceptable. With this defi nition, one can be more focused on this specialization call travel photography.

From my years of being in the shoes of a travel photographer, I would like to share with you the following pointers that could be useful in your journey of travel photography.

Research and PlanKnow yourself; know your terrain, half the battle won. It is important to do research

on the place you are going instead of going there and lose your way. You do not have the luxury of time to spend more than 3 months to slowly discover a place unless you decide to quit your job. If you hardly have less than a week, it is important to know what the things you are expected to see and what are the places you should visit. There are many guide books on the shelves of the book stores; at least they are mostly updated. If you borrow the guide books from other sources, do make sure that they are not outdated or else you will end up in a different place. It is also important to know who to contact if you need help, such as the contact number of the embassies.

If possible, get a local guide

If you are going on your own or with a few friends, you may like to hire the

services of an experienced local guide or driver who knows where are the places you should not miss. Do tell them to bring you to places where the locals often go, as this will shed new light to how the

locals live. If you are on those packaged tour groups with more than 40 people on the tour bus, this is probably more of a family sight seeing holiday. Hence, this is very much dependent on what type of tour you are looking at.

Things to shoot For myself, I have a checklist of things to look out for when I do my travel

photography. I would go to the book shop, to the library or search the internet for resources or photographs for reference. Samples of my checklist can be found in the subsequent pages. The checklist is as below:

Stay healthy The worst thing that can happen is to travel while you are sick. A terrible sinus can ruin

your morning shoot. A tummy ache from eating the unhygienic food from the roadside store (too tempting to resist) can cause much inconvenience especially in a place where toilet facilities are rare. To travel without adequate medicine supply is as bad as trying to fry a fi sh in a wok without oil but water only. If you are for the fi rst time going to places of high altitude, such as 3800m above sea level, you may like to be mentally prepared for breathlessness and spinning headache. I usually bring adequate supply of medicines, which I can share with my compatriots if they fall sick too.

Logistics Heard of the cruel cycle of digital travel photography? It goes something like this….

No power supply = no charging of batteries = batteries fl at = no photography

I always ensure that I will stay in a reasonably good hotel with adequate and constant power supply. The worst that can happen is while one try to save a few hundred dollars, stay in some crappy hotels that shut down power supply from 10pm to 6am, and next comes one of the best sunrise ever by the lake with boat rowers coming towards you out from the fog, and your battery is fl at! I also bring along the multi socket plug so that I can charge several devices at a go. I bring along 2 sets in case anyone of them got smashed in the luggage.

I also ensure that my transport is good to last the trip. There was once, due to peak season, we had to make do with a reasonably “good” vehicle which had tyre threads that seem to be smoothened. We had to pray we do not encounter slippery curbs.

Ethics

“To feel at home, stay at home. A foreign country is not designed

to make you comfortable. It’s designed to make its own

people comfortable.”

Clifton Fadiman

It is important to respect the ethics of the people in different places. What may seem disgusting to you may be a norm for them. For me, I just photograph and move on, do not make any negative comments which may make them unhappy.

Be mentally sane during long journey

The longest journey I have tried is to leave a town at 6am and reach another town at

12 midnight in Northern Xinjiang, China. Another long journey is to travel through the Taklimakan Desert in Southern Xinjiang, China. It is known as the Death Desert highway, as there is simply not much existence of any life along the highway, except for scenes of dunes after dunes. I can choose to be constantly on the lookout for subjects

Coming up in the next issue, do look out for an article on photographing texture. Do not miss this article as Steven Yee shares with you how to make the best out of textures.

and shoot through the window of the moving bus, using Aperture Priority mode, ISO800 and with the biggest aperture. But there will be time when you are sick of shooting the dunes, and you have 6 more hours of travel journey. What I usually do is to bring along a few movie DVD. 6 hours is more than enough to watch 3 shows, and you will be amazed at how time fl ies and your mood remain good. For better mood, try watching MR BEAN DVDs.

Backup

You spend so much time, money and effort in getting the photographs. It is important

to bring along portable external hard disks to store your images. Do expect to have about 4GB to 8GB of JPEG images per day. This is why I do not shoot with RAW fi les, as the space will be horrendous. I also bring along backup DSLR bodies and lenses. For less important trips, I will bring along the digital compact camera as a backup.

Travel and Shoot wisely

What to bring along for the trip? I prefer to travel light; hence I usually have

my DSLR body, 10.5mm DX fi sheye, 12-24mm DX lens and the 18-200mm VR DX lens. I have seen photographers bringing along 8kg load of equipment with the various f2.8 fast lenses. If you intend to go for a trekking tour and without a Sherpa to help you, and you do not have a strong physique, it may not be advisable to tug along the 8kg load of equipment. Know your limits!

Time of the day

Our wakeup call is usually 4.30am, especially if we had to travel long

distances to our destination to photograph the sunrise or if the location experience very early sunrise. The better time to photograph with good lighting is the few hours after sun rise and the few hours before sunset. These are the time where we often experience that warm golden light. Midday sun tends to give harsh lighting which can wash out details, hence the need for ND4 fi lters.

Select pictures everyday

I try to make it a point to select my better pictures everyday instead of waiting to do

so when I get back to Singapore. Procrastination is something to be avoided. I have experienced it before. There is always the excuse “I have no time to run through so many images”, and before you know it, your next trip is coming.

The pointers above are not exhaustive but if you bear them in mind and study the case studies below, travel photography is enjoyable.

SCENERY & LANDSCAPE (BELOW)

Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/1000s, Aperture f4.5, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm, EV -0.3

What attracted me to photograph this picture is how the cloud formation cast shadow and highlight on the trees. This was taken in Northern Xinjiang, China, along the road. I shot this through the window of the moving bus.

FOOD (ABOVE)

Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/160s, Aperture f6, 18-200mm VR set at 200mm

Try to photograph food which is unique to the country. For Singapore, one can easily identify food like Char Kuay Teow, Rojak etc. I usually try to take pictures of the food before I eat them. The above pix is a takeaway Vietnamese noodles fried with beef, from the road side stall. Well, the takeaway is not mine but for a local Vietnamese, I just happen to pass by and request to take a shot.

PLACES OF INTEREST & LANDMARK(LEFT)

Nikon D90, 3D Matrix metering, Auto White Balance, ISO200, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 2s, Aperture f11, 18-200mm VR, set at 18mm, EV -0.7

When we mention places of interest and landmark in Singapore, one of the very fi rst thing that comes to one’s mind would be the Merlion, the Raffl es Hotel, the Esplanade etc. Every country has some places of interest and landmark. These are things that you should not miss.

SMALL THINGS AND SIGNAGES (LEFT)

Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f7.6, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm

Signage can tell a story of a place, be it the products or local specialty. No doubt English language is a universal language in many countries; you may expect to see some amusing texts on the signboards in certain places. These are images worth collecting.

PORTRAITS AND PEOPLE (BELOW)

Nikon D2X, Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/80s, Aperture f4.2, 18-200mm VR at 24mm

Try to explore both the modern and rural side of the country. The below picture was taken in the Northern Territories of Hong Kong and I had to take a long journey via the MTR and by rail to reach this village. These three grand old ladies are probably the last few who still wear the old dresses and sport their unique hats.

ANIMALS (LEFT)

Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/200s, Aperture f7.1, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm

Stray cats, wild birds, any creatures which are unique to the country and that roam the streets or territory of the place deserve a place in your travel portfolio of images.

PLANTS (ABOVE)

Taken in Northern Xinjiang, China. I am not sure what species of Lalang (if it is Lalang in the fi rst place) is this, but what attracted me is how they glow under the back light. For Singapore, not to be missed will be our national fl ower Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid plant. There are many species of fungus, fl oral and fauna all over the world. If you can, try to photograph a few.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

NIGHT LIGHTS (BELOW)

Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 14s, Aperture f9, 18-200mm VR set at 22mm

Look at brochures, internet resources and books and do not miss night scenes of the country you are visiting. This picture was taken at the Peak in Hong Kong.

CULTURAL PERFORMANCE (LEFT)

Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Auto White Balance, ISO800, Manual Mode, Shutter speed 1/200s, Aperture f5.6, 18-200mm VR set at 150mm

Do not miss those cultural performances. Many travellers avoided cultural performance because they thought these are nothing but commercialized performances. However, if you do manage to attend a good performance with authentic setups, you will be able to thoroughly enjoy the essence of the local cultural fl avour. No harm trying.

LEISURE AND SPORTS (ABOVE)

Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/640s, Aperture f12, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm

The Buildings and architecture from past and present do refl ect about a country’s unique culture. Great

buildings or architecture from the past reveal a country’s past splendours and might, while new modern sky scrapers

or refurbished old buildings reveal a country’s economic strength and effort in

architectural preservation.

TRANSPORT (LEFT)

Nikon D2X, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Shutter Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/15s, Aperture f6.7, 18-200mm VR set at 82mm

For Singapore, one of our unique transports will be the trishaw. The rickshaws are long “extinct”. Though the trishaws are now mainly used to ferry tourists, you will be surprised that they do fetch some locals for short distances. Even our trolley buses, Duck tours etc are worth photographing. It will be a surprise also to fi nd out whether you know how many taxi companies we have in Singapore now. Do this likewise when you are in other country and see what are their transports systems.

If you not travelling alone, you may like to explore the alley and back lanes where you can fi nd some interesting objects such as abandoned stuff, people feeding the animals and others. But do be careful if you are doing so alone, as the very last thing you want to happen to you is getting mobbed at the alley.

Handicraft workshops or souvenir showroom are often shunned by some photographers who believe that these

are places mainly for tourists. What they may not realize is behind the scenes, especially in the workshop, you can

expect to see many interesting activities such as the production of the handicraft

and souvenir. This picture was taken at the back of a souvenir shop that sells

pottery. I asked the worker to help do a demonstration after seeking permission

from the shop manager.

PORTFOLIOFEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - PHIL DATE FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - PHIL DATE

038038ISSUE.23

039039ISSUE.23

Phil Date’s fresh, classic photography has

developed into his nationally-recognized

signature style referred to by cl ients and

fol lowers as, natural ly, “very Phil Date”.

What began as a hobby throughout his

travels in Asia developed into not only a

successful career change to professional

photography, but also Phil’s establishment

of one of the world’s top micro-stock

contributors, EastWest Imaging.

Phil studied Actuarial Science at the

University of Kent @ Canterbury, and went

on to London to work in f inance. During

this t ime he visited Malaysia frequently,

the country that was home to many of

his classmates from Kent. Each time he

returned, his love of Asia grew stronger, as

did his awareness that he was not meant

to be desk bound in London. He looked for

a change that could enable him to work in

Asia, and was soon teaching Mathematics

at Tanglin Trust School in Singapore. He

continued to enjoy travel l ing as he explored

the region (with his new F65 in tow), and

sharpened his ever-developing aptitude for

photography.

Phil, always up for a challenge, soon began

studying studio portraiture in Singapore.

As he began to build his home studio

(equipped his new D70) he photographed

friends and their kids, whom by word

of mouth quickly became his fr iends’

fr iends, and friends’ fr iends kids. His

quick popularity sowed the seeds of the

real ization that Phil Date, Math Teacher,

could easi ly become Phil Date, Professional

Photographer. With his growing cl ient

base and faith in the future of micro-stock

images in the digital age, Phil was able to

make the switch to ful l-t ime photographer,

thus founding Phil Date Photography in

2006. His ever growing portfol io and

confidence in stock photography soon led

to EastWest Imaging, which has already

outgrown its f irst studio, now includes a

ful l-t ime photo editor, and has traveled to

Austral ia, Indonesia, and Thailand to build

the company’s’ in-demand l ifestyle images

photography base.

As one who thrives on new challenges, Phil

has taken to his D300 with Ikel ite casing to

deliver underwater portraiture for children

and famil ies. His teaching background

makes him a natural with children, and no

doubt is useful as he works to coordinate

the diff icult task of photographing a child

underwater. Phil admits his new challenge

is tr icky, but well worth the one of a kind

photography he can produce.

Throughout Phil’s development, the one

constant has always been Nikon. Phil has

grown to rely on the build and image quality

that is undeniable Nikon. Phil now shoots

primari ly with the D3 which he adore,

along with a 85mm f1.4 or 70-200mm f2.8

VR lens.

While Phil now calls Singapore home, he sti l l

looks to travel with destinations l ike New

Zealand, Cuba, and Alaska on his mind. He

enjoys going back to his photography roots

of travel shots, and even sti l l enjoys using

an F80 fi lm camera from time to time.

Regardless if it’s a shot from the beaches of

Indonesia, one of Singapore’s lush outdoor

spots l ike Fort Canning, or a modern

portraiture from his newly upgraded studio,

Phil has mastered his recognizable style

cl ients ask for by name. No matter where

he is or what he is shooting, we can always

count on a classical ly fresh signature style

that is “very Phil Date”.

The National Junior College Photographic Society (NJPS) organized SNAP! 2009 between March 2009 and June 2009 with the aim of helping Singaporean youths take a greater interest in the visual arts and the photographic medium, and take up photography as their hobby.

Targeted at youths aged 13 to 21, SNAP! had the theme of ‘Colours’ and the submission period was open from 15 March 2009 to 30 April 2009. Participants were required to

submit both the soft and hard copies of their entries to National Junior College by mail. 9 prizes were provided by Nikon Singapore.

On 30 April 2009, we received over 700 entries. Judging of the entries was done by Mr. Steven Yee and Mr. Chua Swee Ping, and we had the results by 03 May 2009. Results were officially released to the public and

to the participants on 09 May 2009. There were a total of 29 winners, and

A shower of rain came in the morning and we were pondering if the trip to the last Kampong in Singapore would be affected.

Fortunately, the rain was there just to cool the day. Sun after the rain, we embarked on the journey with anticipation and excitement as most of the participants were newcomers to our Nikon Club outings.

The photo hunt consisted of a set of photos by Steven Yee which participants were tasked to find. So together with Steven providing guidance along the way, we eagerly scanned the whole of this small little kampong, capturing everything from little kittens to dogs, birds, and chickens!

Finally, before the weather became too hot, it was time to head back. Most of us got all the shots we needed. One participant was even glad to have found a prized shot of a rare spider!

Back at the Nikon Office, although lethargic after the hunt, our enthusiasm for the photo critique session got over the better of us. So after a satisfying dinner, an interesting and educational photo critique session began!

Satisfi ed participants left with a big “thank you” to what was a fruitful and fulfi lling event for them,
