But there was an im- mediate surprise in store: we’d just gotten used to calling James “Cassian”, and he asked at this time to go back to his bap- tismal name and be called “James” again. So we witnessed James committing for three years to obedience, reformation of life and stability. The monks weren’t the only wit- nesses. James has only one brother but he has about a thousand first cousins (or so it seems to us!), and a lot of them came. Many of the women wore their beautiful saris, making them look like visiting roy- alty. The queen among them was James’ mother, who did the second reading at Mass. James said, “It was one of the most memorable days of my life.” Brother James Makes Simple Vows Fr. Isaiah Teichert, OSB Cam. Through his obedience James imitates Christ who came not to do his own will, but the will of him who sent him. St. Bene- dict urges a high quality obedience in the Rule; it should be executed without hesi- tation, delay, luke-warmness, grumbling or objection. With his vow of reformation of life, James is promising to do what it takes to be a monk, enter into the conver- satio morum, the give and take of ordinary life in community. With his vow of stabil- ity, James promises to stay in place, stay with what St. Benedict calls the “school of charity” which is the monastery. James has said many times that it seems a real school to him, and that he has something to learn from every brother here. Recently James, who is a wonderful singer, trained in South Indian (Carnatic) music, was leading the solemn Salve Regi- na at the end of Vespers. One of the guests followed me out afterward and said, “I hope you guys are keeping that monk. That ‘Salve’ was a thing of beauty.” We have every intention of keeping James. If you are or know of any man be- tween the ages of 25 and 40 interested in religious life, please contact Fr. Isaiah, <[email protected]>.

Vita Monastica This is from an article penned in 1956 by the Dominican scholar Raimundo Spiazzi. In it he is commenting on Thomas Aquinas’ treatment of solitude in the Summa (II.VII.188). In our day and age we might never say that the solitary life is “more perfect” than the communal life, as Saint Thom-as suggests––perfection is to be where God wants us––but the salient point of the article is that solitude needs a good beginning––and it is not an end in itself. Fr. Spiazzi is sug-gesting that the absolute availability of the third good of the Camaldolese charism embodies the Thomistic teaching that every Dominican knows well, that the highest form of the spiritual life is to pass on that which has been contemplated, the “action that proceeds from contemplation.”

Lectio Divina: Reading Scripture “What can be sweeter than a psalm? ...Really! A psalm is in fact a blessing for the faithful, praise for God, a hymn for his people, everyone’s applause, a universal word, the voice of the Church, profession and song of faith, expression of authentic jubilation, the sound of spiritual gladness, it mitigates wrath, frees from worries, relieves sadness. It is protection by night, instruction by day, a shield in time of fear, the festival of holiness, the image of tranquility, a pledge of peace and concord that, like a harp, fuses many and different voices in a single melody. The psalm sings the break of day and echoes still at sunset.” (from the writings of Saint Ambrose of Milan) Happy indeed are those who follow not the counsel of the wicked, nor linger in the way of sinners nor sit in the company of scorners, but whose delight is the law of the Lord and who ponder God’s law day and night.

They are like a tree that is planted beside the flowing waters, that yields its fruit in due season and whose leaves shall never fade; and all that they do shall prosper. Not so the wicked, not so!

For they like winnowed chaff shall be driven away by the wind. When the wicked are judged they shall not stand, nor find room among those who are just; for the Lord guards the way of the just but the way of the wicked leads to doom.

(Psalm 1, 1993 Grail)

From An Oblate’s Journal … By Matt Fisher, Obl. OSB Cam.

Academic Science and the “Third Good” At the time, I didn’t realize how transformative Fr. Ro-muald’swordswouldturnouttobe. Nearlytwentyyearsago,IbecameawareoftheCamaldoleseBenedictinesthroughtheirinvolvementwithinterreligiousdia-logue.IhadalsobeenreflectingonagrowingattractiontoBene-dictinespiritualityandwonderingifImightbecalledtobecomeanoblateof aBenedictinecommu-nity. At that time, New Camaldolihad a dependent house, EpiphanyMonastery, inNewBostonNHthatwasn’t that far from my home insouthwestern Pennsylvania. So thatsummerIwentuptothemonasterytospendfivedaysonretreat. DuringthattimeIhadanumberof conversationswithFr.Romuald, themonk in charge atEpiphany, about a variety of topics in-cludingCamaldolesespiritualityandwhatbecominganoblateinvolved.ItwasduringoneofthoseconversationsthathefirstsharedwithmethewordsofEmanuelleBargellini,formerPriorGeneral,whodescribedtheCamaldoleseperspectiveonChris-tianityasbeingabout“theprimacyoflove.”Atthesametime,Fr.Romualdmadeitquiteclearthatitwasmyresponsibilitytounderstandwhat thosewordsmeant in thecontextofmyownlifeasaChristian,amarriedperson,andachemistryprofessor.Hehadnoeasyorpre-determinedanswerstogiveme. So I returned home to start being an oblate postulant. Where was the human face of issues such as HIV, malaria, Alzheimer’s disease, or tuber-culosis in my upper level biochemistry cours-es that I taught every year? The human reality – the pain, suffering, caring, and sacrifice of individuals – none of those challenges ever appeared in biochemistry textbooks.

Centers of Gravity and Buoyancy: Thoughts on Benedictine Stability

By Deborah Smith Douglas, Obl. OSB Cam.

Excerpted from Deborah’s keynote presentation at the Camaldolese Millennial Assembly in 2013.

IhavebeenmakingannualmonasticretreatsinBenedic-tinemonasteries for as longas I can remember. And I havealways appreciated them as opportunities to reset my innercompasstotrueNorth. But at New Camaldoli my interior re-setting is deeper, more subtle, more powerful, andmore abiding, than I haveexperiencedinanyothermonastery. I am not sure why this should be so…it probably hassomethingtodowiththeunusualdepthofsilencethattheHer-mitageaffords, and theopportunity affordedby the solitudebothto“ascendthedepths”and“descendtotheheights”(asPriorCyprianlikestosay),andtorediscoverboththestabilityofbeinggroundedinGodandthelightnessofit—thechancetotestbothrootsandwings. I don’t knowmuch about sailing or shipbuilding, but IhavereadSebastianJunger’sbookThe Perfect Storm.InthatbookIlearnedthatthestabilityofashipinhighseasandbadweatherdependsagreatdealontherightrelationshipbetweentheship’stwoindispensablecenters:thecenterofgravity,andthecenterofbuoyancy(ofwhichIhadneverheard). These“centers”arenotstaticplaces,butopposingforces:gravityisthesumofallthedownwardforcesinthehull,buoy-ancyalltheupwardforcesthatkeeptheshipafloat.Thecenterof gravity is fixed, but the center of buoyancy is constantlyshifting.Itactsasthe“restoringforce,”the“rightingmove-ment”thatcompensateswhentheshipisbesetbyhighwindsandroughseas.
