CCSC Touches Lives
As the current pandemic and economic crises impact our community, CCSC is helping an extraordinarily high number of people in need. And yet, numbers only tell you so much. Each statistic represents an individual
with a unique story—some we have known for years and
others who are new to CCSC. Here are four brief stories we
share to remind everyone how your involvement is poignantly,
positively impacting lives.
He always makes
us smile, and we
have an endearing
nickname for him:
“the well-dressed
gentleman.” This
gracious senior
citizen visits one
of our pantries
monthly for food
to stretch his
limited budget. He usually dons a spiffy hat and it’s clear
that he takes great care in his appearance—no matter how
slowly he moves or what financial struggles he is facing. He is
always quick to compliment volunteers, offer his gratitude and
encourage our team. His welcome presence inspires us to be
even more positive and kind to one another.
“Catherine” has benefited from both the employment and
basic needs arms of CCSC. Our grocery assistance has helped,
but her biggest strides have come through JobNet. Although
Catherine has a college degree and teaching certificate, she
battles ADHD and has learned that classroom management
is not her strength. In addition to working one-on-one
with Jobnet’s Success Coach, she has participated in several
workshops and computer classes. At present, she is employed
as a nanny, but Catherine has entrepreneurial plans to create
an English language arts tutoring business.
In late March—just as the COVID-19 crisis was starting
to impact Greater Houston in significant numbers—“John”
suffered a right-side stroke and was hospitalized for over three
weeks. This was the second time the 52-year-old, who lives in
the Sharpstown area, requested assistance—the first was five
years prior after a heart attack. John is mostly self-sufficient
outside of medical crises, and Emergency Services-Southwest
was grateful to provide help with his June rent payment so he
could focus on rest and rehabilitation.
“Karla” doesn’t say
she is homeless,
but we are fairly
certain she is. This
young woman visits
Emergency Services-
Central a couple of
times per month. She
travels with a large
pack of belongings
and can only carry
a small amount of
food with her. Early on, we observed her severe discomfort
around males so each time she arrives we ask a female volunteer
to assist her. Quiet, intelligent and protective of her story, Karla
is gradually beginning to trust our team. As she shares more of
her story, we will demonstrate our worthiness of her trust by
respectfully helping her with any additional needs.
Each client in line knows CCSC cares and is there to help.
JobNet volunteer Elizabeth House cares about the financial needs of every client she serves.
Volunteers fill each grocery package with care.

Does Your Company or Former Company Match Donations? Many companies offer employees, retirees, and sometimes employee spouses, a matching-gift benefit that can double or even triple your donation to a qualifying charitable organization like CCSC. Some will even make a matching contribution for your volunteer hours! Each company has its own method for you to submit a matching-gift request. Check with your Human Resources department to find out how you can maximize your donations to CCSC.
CCSC appreciates your support of the A Time To Build Capital Campaign. We are edging closer to our goal
of $14.2 million. For more information about the campaign, or information about ways you can contribute,

Dear CCSC Friend,
This year—2020—is CCSC’s 40th anniversary. We had plans to
celebrate through the Azalea Gala and possibly (still!) through
the fall event. We will see—it’s hard to plan right now.
Yet there is something right and true for the organization to
be head-down and focused on the human need streaming
through our doors during this anniversary year. Our founder
and the early volunteers used to share stories of what it was
like in the early 1980s when the oil bust hit Houston. They
remembered helping people who seemingly had a secure job
and lifestyle one day, and then were laid off with little prospect
for employment in a city that was decimated economically.
I remember hearing that Houston might never recover, yet we
not only recovered, we flourished. Still, there was great human
suffering as there has been during other economic downturns
and natural disasters.
CCSC is called to view things broadly and plan strategically,
but serve locally and individually. This is why the organization
has done great work for 40 years.
This anniversary year has not turned out as we had planned,
but I think we are doing just what God intends us to be doing:
seeing the face of Christ on each person who comes through
and keeping our focus on alleviating their suffering.
We are living through history, and I pray that when the
organization celebrates a future anniversary our successors
might say we did good work, were faithful to our call, and
honored God throughout the process.

Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is an award-winning, community-based non-profit organization serving the southwest Houston community. Incorporated in 1980,
CCSC has grown to encompass a coalition of 39 churches united in service to the needy.
MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) is to serve
the poor, hungry, disabled and otherwise needy while respecting their
religious, ethnic or cultural differences. CCSC was created out of faith and
founded in the belief that we are called to help all God’s children heart to
heart and hand in hand.
-
More people in need means more people phoning CCSC, and Rob Scholl has
been on the front lines of answering many of those phone calls.
“I had volunteered before, but I had no clue how crazy answering the phones
could be, and COVID has made that role crazy times 10,” Rob said. “I like to think
that I keep the staff and volunteers laughing with my feeble attempts at speaking
a few Spanish phrases.”
Rob keeps the staff laughing but he has nothing but compassion for those on
the phone calling to ask for CCSC’s help to make their rent or utility payments.
“The key to CCSC—and, hopefully, my goal as a volunteer—is that CCSC is a
place of hope to people who are working really hard to raise their families and
just need an extra set of hands,” Rob said. “Some people we can help, others we
can’t, but for all those encounters—no matter the length of time—we can listen
with empathy to their stories.”
Born and raised in Houston and a longtime member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Rob has volunteered in a variety of
positions with CCSC: Church Council Representative, Jingle Bell Express Book Committee, Board of Directors, the Clothing
Closet, Administration, and on those incredibly busy phone lines at Emergency Services-Central.
For Rob, volunteering at CCSC is opening his life to others. “Volunteering means meeting people I would never run into,
whether clients or other volunteers,” Rob said. For CCSC, having Rob as a volunteer means another open heart to walk hand
in hand with.

Living through a quarantine is especially hard on a job
seeker with no access to a computer and the internet. JobNet
has opened its computer lab by appointment for clients to
continue their job search, do online applications, work on their
computer skills or improve their resumes.
With safety in mind, lab users are required to make an
appointment, complete a health screening when entering
(including having their temperature taken), and wear a mask
at all times. Only two people may be in the lab at one time.
Keyboards and surrounding areas are disinfected before and
after each user. Staff and volunteers follow the same safety
guidelines.
JobNet clients may call 713-686-8320 or email jobnet@
ccschouston.org to schedule an appointment.
JOBNET
MARTHA’S WAYIn June, CCSC held a socially distanced drive-thru graduation
for students who had completed their Martha’s Way classes
but whose graduation had been canceled due to the pandemic.
Fourteen participants received certificates of completion,
personalized marketing materials, a pad folio, and cleaning
supplies to support their businesses. Martha’s Way will be
offered virtually for new students in July, and this summer
Martha’s Way graduates will have the opportunity to participate
in various virtual workshops on successfully adapting their
businesses to cope with the crisis.
JobNet Assistant Manager Maria Bonett takes a client’s temperature before allowing her to enter the computer lab.
YOUTH SERVICES–BACK TO SCHOOL With low-income families struggling more than ever, CCSC
remains committed to equipping 6,500 students in need with
academic resources through its Back To School program. It
costs $50 to provide one student with a grade-level academic
package and voucher to buy new clothing/shoes. This year,
CCSC canceled its August volunteer event to minimize social
gathering health risks and, instead, is delivering all academic
supplies and uniform vouchers directly to partner campuses.
“Our clients, who already have limited resources, are so
appreciative of how this program eases a financial burden and
equips their children with clothing and supplies to start the
school year,” said CCSC’s Youth Services Manger Cathy Brown.
“We know that many in the CCSC community will miss
volunteering at the event,” said CCSC Development Director
Sharon Current. “But we hope that in lieu of giving your time,
you will consider giving dollars. A donation of any amount
makes you a Back To School 2020 hero.”
Please visit www.ccschouston.org to make a Back To School
donation. For additional information, please call 713-961-3993.

As construction progresses and the countdown begins
for the opening of the new J. Dean Robinson Building
this fall, CCSC is thankful for the many donors who are
making the new facility possible. CCSC is also eager to
wrap up the A Time To Build Capital Campaign to fully
fund the new building. Now is the time to be a part of
CCSC history with a gift—or additional gift—to the
campaign. With $1.3 million still needed toward the $14.2
million goal, every gift counts and is much appreciated.
For more information, including naming opportunities,
please contact Development Director Sharon Current at
To see progress photos of the new building, visit
CCSC’s website at www.ccschouston.org and click on
“Construction Update” on the right side of the page.
Local artist Alex Schwenke’s stationery company—MESH by
Alex—created a successful “Shop For A Cause” campaign that
generated $2,600 to support CCSC’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
Alex designed the lovely note cards featuring her original
watercolor design and generously donated the proceeds of
the campaign to CCSC. Alex is following in the footsteps of
her father, Ken Schwenke, a dedicated CCSC volunteer and
supporter.
Turbulent times often engender reflective times. Searching for
meaning in our lives, we think about a legacy of purpose and
love.
As you think about your legacy, please consider leaving a gift
to CCSC in your estate planning. There are many options for
planned gifts to help extend and expand CCSC’s mission for
many years to come.
For more information, please contact Development Director
Sharon Current at [email protected]. If you have
already included CCSC in your legacy planning, please let us
know so we can express our heartfelt gratitude.
