PRINCIPAL’S REPORT -
School Production progressing well.
Preparations for the school’s 2017 School Production “Oceania’ are progressing very well. This week cast selection has taken place and steady progress is being made with props and costumes. Please make sure you have pencilled the evening of Thursday 15th September in your diary for the performance of ‘Oceania’ at the Basketball stadium.
Literacy Information Evening for Parents
Parents wishing to attend the upcoming Literacy Information evening at school on 1st September are asked to return the reply slip by Friday next week, 26th August. A reminder that child care is available on the evening.
PJ Day
Last week’s PJ Day fundraiser, organised by our school’s House Captains, was a great success with over $280 being raised for the Pyjama Angels Foundation. Well done to our House Captains and all children for their participation.
Naplan Reports
The Naplan Reports for those children in Year 3 and 5 who participated in the Naplan Testing in Term 2 have arrived at school. The class teachers will be sending the reports home today. If you wish to discuss your child’s report with his / her teacher please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a catch up.
BFG Movie Screening
The school is hosting the screening of The BFG at Port Fairy Theatre on Sunday 28th August. As this is also Women’s Weekend in Port Fairy the Fundraising Committee is looking for some dads to help out at the theatre. If you can assist please let Jenni or Ronda in the office know and your contact details will be passed on the Adele Brown.
Early Arrivals at School.
In the newsletter we regularly comment on the need for children to be ‘on-time’ for school. By that we mean getting to school around 8:45 to 8:50 am. This gives children time to catch up with their friends and be ready to start class when the bell rings at 9 am. This term, however, we have noticed that quite a few children are arriving very early for school, some as early as 8 am. Teachers are not on duty for supervision before 8:50 am and our Before School Program only supervises children who are booked in with Bev. Please aim to drop off your children around 8:45 am. and discourage your children from coming to school extra early.
Condolences to the Middenway family.
People with a long connection with Port Fairy Consolidated School will be saddened to hear that John Middenway, a past teacher of our school, passed away on Monday. Both John and his wife, Joy, taught here in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. John then went on to be principal of Timboon Primary School. On a personal note, John was my grade 6 teacher here in 1968. Our condolences to Joy, their daughter Kaye, and family.

Visitors Book
A reminder that we now have revised Visitor processes in place at school. All visitors are required to ‘sign in’ at the office, wear a visitor badge during visits, ‘sign out’ and return the badge to the office at the end of their visit.
Literacy Information Evening for Parents
As indicated in last week’s newsletter, the Literacy Information evening for parents is now scheduled for Thursday 1st Sep-tember, from 7pm to 8:30 pm. The guest speaker will be Cathy Sproal, a literacy consultant based in Melbourne who assist schools to develop their literacy programs. Cathy specialises in providing professional development to teachers in relation to the Fountas and Pinnel Program which is part of the Literacy Program at our school. If you would like to attend this evening please complete the Reply Slip in the newsletter. Child care will be available on the night.

Prep/1’s— In Reading this week Prep/1’s are continuing to learn about how word tools such as dictionaries, thesaurus-es, glossaries, maps etc. can be used to expand our vocabulary. In Maths we are beginning to learn about the concept of line symmetry. A shape has line symmetry if it is a mirror image either side of a centre (mirror) line. In Writing we are continuing our work with information reports. We are slowly getting ready for the school concert.
1/2’s— Students are enjoying learning about the Rio Olympics and doing a variety of reading, writing and maths activi-
ties. In Reading we are finding how to use different word tools for reading. We are using maps, an atlas, GPS and
Google as tools for finding information about all things “Olympic”. In Writing we are writing information reports about
our gold medallists. In Maths we are learning how to make, draw, record and talk about ordinal number and graphing
Olympic results. In Spelling we are continuing with our phonics learning. The vowel sounds are very tricky, especially
that many letter combinations that can make one sound. This week is the short and long “o”.
3/4’s—We ran like Usain Bolt, jumped like Javier Sotomayor and Mike Powell and measured everything we did. We have been trying to relate our work to the Olympics! In Reading we have been summarising and this has helped us in our Writing with information reports. We have been able to present our work as posters, iMovies, Coding and Stop Mo-tion. We went and watched Seussical and some of us went to Ballarat to race our bikes. Notes are coming home for camp in October and we need them back for numbers as soon as possible.
5/6’s— Good luck to all competitors at 'Hoop Time' on Friday, a big thank you to Ms Green for getting our teams organ-ised! We had a great Olympic event last Friday with lots of fun and challenging activities. In Writing we are learning how to write a letter for our Sovereign Hill visit. In Numeracy we are completing data analysis of Olympic sports. In Reading we are continuing our work on clarifying and summarising.
Physical Education
The Olympic spirit was in full force last Friday, with our Olympic morning a great success and a lot of fun. There was a short opening ceremony with country march passes, torch run, athlete and officials’ oath taking. Children then moved through ten different Olympic themed activities including; Equestrian, Gymnastics, Swimming, Fencing, Hockey, Trap Shooting, Athletics, Soccer, Rugby 7’s and Basketball. The change of activities was signalled by “I go to Rio –Peter Allan” playing over the loud speakers (Thankyou Milo!) there were some very good Rumba moves developing by the end of the day! The day concluded with everyone gathering on the basketball court to form the giant Olympic rings. Thankyou to all the classroom teachers for managing the quick changes between activities and for your enthusiasm. A huge thankyou to my Olympic Volunteers, Maddie Green, Tenae Mounsey, Maddie Lee, Ascha Peterson, Lexie Finnigan and Jedd Finnigan for the early start on Friday to help with set up, great job team!
The 5/6’s then heard from three time Olympian Judy Pollock about her Athletics career and exciting Olympic stories. They also got to see her Bronze medal and world record plaques!
Some great news from Basketball Victoria our winning Hoop Time, Future Stars team “Panthers” have qualified for the Region-al Championships in Werribee on the 5th of October, a wonderful effort. Parents of those children in the team will need to ar-range their own transport to the event.
We had a team of riders represent PFCS at the Victorian Schools Greater Western Cycling Championships in Ballarat yesterday. Great riding by all those that took part. Jonathan Taynton 2nd place in U11, Angus Hogan 1st Novice U11, Jack Lee 3rd Novice U11. Mana Hauraki and Jacob Taynton also rode very well in the U13 Novice and Racing grades, well done to you all! A huge thankyou to Ronnie Hollingsworth and other parents that attended for assisting the children and supporting them. Good luck to those that progress to the State Championships on the 16th October.
Good luck to the 5/6 Hoop Time competitors for Friday. We have 8 teams participating and I’m sure it will be a fun and exciting day.

Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF) - Dairy Assistance
As part of the Victorian Government’s dairy assistance package the Camps, Sport and
excursions Fund (CSEF) is being extended to students currently enrolled in government
and non-government schools whose parents own, share-farm or lease a dairy farm
business; or those people whose primary occupation is working on a dairy farm.
If you think you may be eligible, please collect an application form from the office.

Scouts Victoria Raffle We are participating in the Scouts Victoria Raffle this year again. For every $2 ticket sold, $1.50 goes straight to our school. We won’t be sending these out with the children, instead if you want to help out by selling a book or two please pick them up from office. All books need to be returned by Wed August 24th. Thanks for your help!
Before and After School Care
Fergus is creating a character from bionicles. This activity encourages the children to problem solve as there are several types of connectors that they can use to join pieces together. Not an easy task as a lot of thought is required to work out which connector is the right piece for their character.
