INTRODUCTION

As per the requirement of our syllabus, we the class of second year B.Sc

Zoology, on the 14th of February 2011, headed by our class teacher Ms. Snober

Bhatt and two other teachers, had gone on a educational visit to the “Central Bee

Research and Training Institute” located at Shivaji nagar, Pune, as seen on the map

below:

The Central Bee Research and Training Institute is a combination of honey

production unit as well as a place for experimenting and training individuals about

the techniques of apiculture.

This Institute is run by the Government of India. This Institute has a small scale

rearing and processing unit,as the production is mostly used up for the research

of honey bee and its bi-products and only a small amount is being sold out, the

honey that is sold out are sold in the outlets are government certified, hence they

are of the purest honey anyone can get.

This Institute also conducts training programs for individuals of different

interests in honey bee, there are certificate courses that are offered, which are

conducted for a short duration of time, but for those aspiring for higher studies in

apiculture, long term degree courses are also available and scholarships are also

given to those students by the Government of India.

The visit details are as follows:

On reaching the research center, we informed the reception and a guide

cum professor was arranged to guide us in the institute.

We were first introduced about the various types of bees in India,their habit and

their habitat and their various features,then we moved on to the museum, in

which the following things were shown and explained:

This chart shows the different types of pollen traps that are used to trap

the pollen from the bee pollen sacs, these pollen are then stored in capsules and

then provided to them when there is shortage of pollen grains.

This pic shows the different types of plants that the bees usually go to for

collecting the pollen grains to make their honey.

This chart shows the various steps and techniques of bee rearing and honey

collection.

This pic shows the traditional style or technique of rearing bees in the jungle or in

rural villages.

These pictures above shows the different types of apparatus that were first used

for rearing bees. The first is the bamboo hive,the next is the book hive and the

third is the trigona hive which is specially used for the trigona species of bees.

These are the standard type of hives that are used in rearing bees.

This apparatus that is displayed is a wasp trap.

This pic shows the apparatus for extracting honey.

This pic shows the different types of bee hives in the wild.

This is a picture of a smoke gun,used for smoking the hive before taking the honey

from the comb.

This pic shows a chart in which different types of pollen grains that bees use for

honey making.

CONCLUSION

This institution plays a major role in the development of the skills in the

field of apiculture, as it provides training on the proper methods of rearing of

honey bees and it also avoids the over exploitation of the honey bees by taking an

equivalent amount of honey from the bees and giving the bees the amount of

honey required for them to live and to feed their young ones with.

This institution also plays a major role in the quality assesmant of the honey

that is being sold out in their outlets and also in the other outlets where honey is

being sold.

Lastly, this Institution in one way or the other help in the conservation and

also the prevention of extinction of different varieties of honey bees.
