COSTA CONCORDIA WRECK REMOVAL
REFLOATING A COLLOSUS
• Island Giglio, Italy 2012 - 2014
• 41m depth, 114,147 gross ton
• Parbuckling, refloating, tow & delivery of
Costa Concordia in one piece
• 530 people, 7 dedicated teams

JACK UP REMOVAL
LARGE PIECES, RESTRICTED ACCESS
• Offshore jack-up platform, suffered a
punch-through and sank next to live
wellhead platform off the coast of Mexico
• The hull of the platform (7,000t) was
buried 26 meters into the mud, a mere 2
meters away from the wellhead platform
• ITT to completion: less than 1 year
o ITT launched Dec ‘15
o Tender submitted Feb ‘16
o Award of contract Mrch ‘16
o Start of work Apr ‘16
o Project completion Nov ‘16
JACK UP REMOVAL
APPLIED INGENUITY
• Subsea guillotine to cut the
hull into manageable pieces.
• Unique giant hydraulic grab to
quickly and safely lift the large
pieces.
• 2016 world’s largest salvage
contract completed within one
season and on budget.
CROSS SECTOR TRANSFER
FROM SALVAGE TO DECOM
• Extensive experience globally
• Challenges overcome:
o Environmental sensitivity
o Safe preparations
o Multiple stakeholders management
o Damaged or unknown condition
o Challenging logistic chains
o Safe disposal
o Dynamic planning and scheduling
SOLUTION: ONE & TWO
VERTICAL REFLOAT & TOPPLING AND REMOVAL
Jacket removal concept #1:
• Buoyancy in legs / Vertical refloat
Jacket removal concept #2:
• Toppling and lifting jacket
• Modular system: Usable for most Jackets
• Closed A-Shape Design
• Divided in several compartment / tanks
• Clamped onto straight vertical side of the Jacket
• Jacket Structure is able to bear the imposed forces
and moments
• Sufficient stability due to adequate water plane area
at all steps of operation
• System is able to turn the Jacket horizontally (overall
360˚ possible)
