MOSMAN HIGH FLYER FEBRUARY 2019

The Pig is not thought to be a smart
animal in China. It likes sleeping and
eating and becomes fat. Thus it usually
features laziness and clumsiness. On the
positive side, it behaves itself, has
no plan to harm others, and can bring
affluence to people. Consequently, it has
been regarded as a symbol of wealth.
Usually I like to relate the animal and its
characteristics to Mosman High but the
Pig is not really applicable to us ☺.

A school community fostering creativity, individuality and leadership while striving for excellence in teaching and learning.
Welcome back
Welcome or welcome back to all our
families. I hope you had a relaxing and
enjoyable summer break. The school
was a very busy place over the summer
vacation with the top floor of the art
block being completely refurbished.
All the internal walls were knocked
down creating one large space. The
room was repainted and received new
floor coverings as well as two
storerooms at either end of the space.
Later in the term a new dividing door
will be installed so that the space can
be separated into classrooms or opened
to form one large space where teachers
can collaborate and support 21st
century learning.
The two new portables have received
the latest in technology and with new
furniture and air-conditioning are in
demand by staff and students.
Bathrooms were repainted as were
hallways so that the school was
looking great for the start of the school
year.
2019 Happy New Year in the Year of the Pig

Continued from page 1
Congratulations to the Class of 2018!
The first day back is a Staff
Development Day and part of the day
was allocated to analysing the 2018
HSC. The many emails from happy
families and the smiles of students who
have come to visit reflect the success of
these wonderful young people. More
than 20% of our students received an
ATAR of over 90, with Emma Butler
achieving the top ATAR of 99.10. Emma
was ranked first in the state in 2017 as an
accelerated student in French continuers.
Congratulations also to Lily Conlon who
was an all-rounder with all her results in
the HSC being greater than 90%.
Another pleasing achievement was that
over 90% of Year 12 received an ATAR
and almost all received first-round
university offers. Many students chose
Sydney University, however with over
30 students receiving early offers to
university (before sitting their HSC) an
increasing number of students chose
Macquarie University, while those with
an interest in science and engineering
chose UNSW and others with an interest
in design chose UTS.
Many students had individually
outstanding results and it was fantastic to
have 19 students nominated for their
HSC major works with 5 in art, 2 in
multimedia, 4 in drama, 2 in music, 2 in
textiles and 4 for design. Harmony
Lovegrove has been selected to sing at
the Opera House as part of the Encore
Performance while all five nominated
artists were selected for ArtExpress with
two having their work showcased at the
Art Gallery of NSW. Tom Denby’s
wonderful design of a shark proof wet
suit was selected for the Shape
exhibition. This success in major works
and performance reflects the emphasis
placed at Mosman on the 21st century
skills of creativity, collaboration, critical
thinking and research; skills that place us
as a leader in this area of educational
pedagogy.
Two students were placed tenth in the
state for one of their subjects; Theo
Dahlstrom for his IT multimedia
animation film “Travellers” and Ben
Hartmann in German Beginners.
What always is most pleasing to me is
that no matter what a student’s interest or
talent they can be confident that they will
receive the support of our very
experienced and dedicated teachers to
enable them to achieve at the highest
level!
On behalf of the Mosman High
community I congratulate the “class of
2018”.
Enrolments
With the continued high demand for
enrolment at Mosman High, all year
groups are almost full and again only
local students are permitted to attend
our school … and I guess this is not
surprising! With our focus on 21st
century skills and academic excellence,
in a climate of acceptance, support and
genuine care, where individuality is
prized and diversity is nurtured,
Mosman High is by any measure, an
outstanding school.
Lots happening in term 1
Both Year 7 and Year 11 will
participate in camps in first semester.
The Year 7 camp with Orientation
Week provide great opportunities for
students to get to know one another.
The Year 11 camp is being held at
Milson Island, early in term 2. The
mandatory Cross-Roads 25 hour
program is included within the Year 11
camp and therefore the camp is
compulsory for all Year 11 students.
The first of this year’s concerts
Akoostikum will take place later in the
term and our “not to be missed”
Grandparents Concert will take place
celebrating Education Week for Year 7
families. Of course Term 1 sees the
completion of two carnivals; the
swimming carnival and later the cross
country carnival. Thank you to all
parents who will be involved on these
days. Finally in the April school
holidays a number of our music
ensembles will travel to and perform in
Hawaii a wonderful opportunity for our
young musicians.
Basketball tour to the USA
Leaving on Boxing Day two of our
boys’ basketball teams travelled to the
east coast of the United States. Over
two weeks they visited many schools
making new friends and playing
competitive basketball. They
represented their school and country
well and had a fantastic opportunity to
pursue their sport as well as experience
the Californian culture. They were
accompanied by Mr Webster, Mr
Watson and Mr Olchoway who spoke
highly of the camaraderie and leadership
shown by the boys.
Staff changes
There have been very few staff changes
from 2017 to 2018. We welcome Mr
Barry Oxby to the science staff and
welcome back Mrs Jenny Harris and Mrs
Tammy Jeffrey. Ms Elisa Connolly is a
welcome addition to the TAS staff
replacing Ms Livingstone. Ms Carolyn
Yu is replacing Mrs Mears who retired at
the end of 2018 and Ms Amy Xue is
relieving Head Teacher mathematics. Ms
Alice Curtis is replacing Ms Chase who
moved closer to home at Carlingford HS.
These teachers are outstanding additions
to our school and bring with them a
wealth of experience and talent.
As you know our school is divided into
Stages. At Mosman we have a Head
Teacher responsible for each Stage.
Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8):
Ms Bernadette Smith (also LOTE)
Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10):
Mrs Ackerman (also Visual Art)
Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12):
Mr John Feros (also Performing Arts)
I am pleased to announce that for 2019
we will have three deputies. The deputies
will parallel the Stage Head Teachers.
Mr Neil Parsons will be the Stage 4
deputy. Mr Tony Gahan will be the
Stage 5 deputy and Ms Colette Longley
will be the Stage 6 deputy. Our three
deputies will work closely with the Stage
HTs and look after all aspects of
wellbeing, attendance and learning of the
two year groups in their care.
These Deputies and Stage Head Teachers
work closely with the Years Advisers
and for parents they will be a point of
contact if you have concerns regarding
your student’s progress. Mr Johnson will
be coordinating Disability Provisions for
Year 12 in 2019.

At Mosman High we believe that the
education of each student is enhanced
by a strong partnership between school
and home, and we welcome parent
involvement and contact.
Once again welcome back to school. I
hope your year is happy and successful
and that each student at Mosman strives
to make 2019 a year to achieve his or her
personal best.
From the Deputy Principal FROM Colette Longley, Deputy Principal
Senior Curriculum
This year the school day for our Year 11
and year 12 students may be from 7:55 to
4:20. The school day has been adjusted
to maximise the school resources eg
specialty rooms such as laboratories,
technology and art rooms as well as
performance spaces. The students were
informed of this change in a variety of
ways in 2018. This change means there
may be more study periods during the
day in the timetable. Seniors have always
been able to have a flexible start and
finish. This year, provided permission is
granted by the parent/caregiver, senior
students can go home during the day if
their timetable shows they have two or
more periods free as a 2 hour or more
block during the course of the day.
Students are beginning to bring in their
notes already. Year 11 students can ask
for assistance on how to manage their
time from the stage 6 HT, Mr Feros or
DP, Ms Longley and/or year advisers,
Ms Plunkett and Mr Garner. Year 12
students are also encouraged to speak
to the welfare team (year advisers Ms
McLean and Mr Thomas) and their
mentor about how to best maximise
time in their final year of schooling.
Year 11 will be having a session with
Elevate in the coming weeks on time
management.
Learning and Support at Mosman
High School In any classroom there are students
who may experience difficulties with
learning. Learning difficulties may
arise at any time throughout a student’s
school life. Prime responsibility for
meeting the needs of students with
learning difficulties lies with the school
and the classroom teacher. Our school
learning support team plays a key role
in meeting this responsibility.
Students with learning difficulties will
have differing levels of educational need,
which may require the provision of one
or more educational support services
over varying periods of time. The school
applies for integrated funding for high
needs students and these students may
receive part time or fulltime support
from school learning and support officers
(SLSOs) during a school day. The SLSO
is not a teacher and does not plan a
lesson. Their role is to support the
teacher and the student in the classroom.
We have 5 SLSOs. They are Shona
Malm, Vicki Liddy, Gayle Humphries,
Robyn Beardsall, Laurissa Sticotti.
Our Learning Support Team meets every
second Thursday and consists of

Role of the Learning Support Team
The Learning Support Team focuses on
enhancing the quality of the learning
experience for all students. The team
works towards building teacher capacity
to recognise and respond to the needs of
all students and develop, implement and
monitor whole school planning and
support for students.
The Learning Support Team considers
the type and level of support students
with disabilities and learning difficulties
require, to address the curriculum,
communication, social skills, personal
care and safety and mobility needs of
students. The team identifies and brings
together key personnel within the school
community who are most suitable to
support the classroom teacher in meeting
the student’s learning requirements. This
may include NDIS services into a school
day.
The Mosman High Learning Support
Referral Process involves:
Step 1: Teacher identifies student(s)
experiencing learning difficulties.
Step 2: Teacher reviews the teaching
and learning strategies for that student.
An example might be that the teacher
will adjust the assessment task to meet
the needs of the student. You may see in
a formal notice of a summative
assessment there may be three different
questions available for a student to
access based on their ability.
Step 3: The classroom teacher
reviews the effectiveness of the
strategies used.
a) If the student’s achievement of the
course learning outcomes has
improved, the referral process does
not need to proceed at this time.
b) If the student is continuing to
experience learning difficulties, the
classroom teacher consults with the
head teacher about proceeding onto
step 4.
Step 4: The classroom teacher and
the head teacher will refer to the
student the Learning Support Teacher,
Mrs O’Neill. Referrals may also come
from the Principal, Deputy Principal,
Year Adviser, Counsellor, parents,
primary links and/or student and
usually will enter the process at step 4.
If a parent acknowledges on an
enrolment form that the student has a
diagnosed learning difficulty the
enrolment officer and the Principal will
flag the student with the Learning and
Support Teacher also.
Step 5: The student’s needs are
assessed and a learning support plan
for the student is developed based on
the referral information and
collaboration with the counsellor,
student and parent/carer. Learning
plans are developed from information
provided by a specialist and
information supplied by a current
diagnosis.
Step 6: The Learning and Suppor t
Teacher (L&ST) distributes the learning
plan and the classroom teacher
implements the learning support plan and
monitors the student’s learning. This
may also involve consultancy,
withdrawal and team teaching.
Step 7: Adjustments are made to
achieve improvement in student’s
achievement of learning outcomes. The
teacher will evaluate the effectiveness of
the adjustment approximately every ten
weeks and record their observations as
well as give feedback of what worked
and didn’t work in the classroom on our
electronic system. This informs all
classroom teachers of the adjustments
that can be implemented more effectively
in the classroom. The learning support
plan is reviewed by the L&ST and
discussed at the learning support team
meetings from data supplied by the
classroom teacher. Parents may also
make contact with the L&ST to discuss
their child’s learning.
Step 8:
a) When strategies are successful the
learning plan will remain in play as
negotiated.
b) If the outcomes have not been
achieved the learning support plan
may be adjusted.
When a student starts a learning plan, the
team reviews it after ten weeks. This
allows time for teachers of year 7 for
example, to get to know their students
and how they learn as well as allow
teachers to be in a better position to
comment on the success of the plan’s
implementation. There is a big difference
between the observations of a year 6
student by one teacher in a primary
setting as opposed to the 13 different
teachers a student may have in year 7.
Step 9: At the end of each year we plan
a handover from the current teacher to
the newly appointed timetabled teacher
of the following year to ensure continuity
and currency.

Disability Provisions for the HSC
FROM Clint Johnson, HT PDHPE
Disability provisions provide students
who have special needs with practical
support in formal exams. Students’
special examination needs may include
learning, medical, vision or hearing
difficulties. Examples of provisions
available include: braille or large-print
papers, use of a writer and/or reader, use
of an oral interpreter, extension of test
time, rest breaks, separate examination
supervision and permission to take
medication.
In preparing the application additional
evidence must support the application.
This must include a report from your
child’s GP or other health professional
or a vision or hearing test. The
evidence should be less than 12 months
old at the commencement of the test/
exams. Schools are required to
determine the disability provisions that
will be allowed in school-based
examinations. It is advised Year 11
students apply for disability provisions
in 2019 so that they have some
experience of the provision provided
the following year in the HSC. The
Board only determines disability
provisions for the Higher School
Certificate examinations. Students and
parents should be advised that there is no
guarantee the Board will grant the same
provisions as those given at school.
Applications for known cases must be
submitted to Mr Clint Johnson HT
PDHPE by the 12th April 2019. For
further information go to:

Wellbeing Committee Report FROM Stephanie Hart, Carla Ryan & Jane Harlen, Wellbeing Committee
Parents of students in all years are
welcome
Paul Dillon has established himself as a
bit of a legend with the older Mosman
High School students - pretty
impressive for someone who gives
them a wellbeing talk focussed on
drugs, alcohol and risk taking once a
year. He is an incredible communicator
and educator: reframing stereotypes
with hard data to demonstrate to our
young people that in practice NOT
taking drugs and alcohol is the norm.
He is also realistic enough to
acknowledge that from time to time
they will be around risky behaviours
and he teaches them how to look after
each other as and when that happens.
Time and again parents relay stories to
us about how their children have found
themselves in a difficult situation and
have fallen back on the lessons Paul
taught them - it is a shared language
among the students that they take
beyond School.
His presentations to parents are equally
compelling. Even if your child is not
what you would consider to be a risk-
taker (…or likely to become a risk-
taker), Paul’s talk is 100% worth
listening to for parents of students in
every year. He helps you contemplate
and recalibrate your relationship with
your child and how best to communicate
and guide them, as together you navigate
the oft wily waters of adolescence.
This will be the fifth year that Paul has
visited Mosman High School. Each year
at the beginning of term one, he talks to
students in years 10, 11 and 12 during
the day and that evening he presents to
parents, bringing a different focus every
year.
P&C Wellbeing Committee Meeting Monday 11th March at 6.30pm
Mosman High School Foyer
All parents welcome
The P&C Wellbeing group will be
meeting with Susan Wyatt, the MHS
Principal, to plan the various 2019
presentations and activities. We would
welcome any interested parents joining
us to contribute ideas and/or help
with organising events. Over the years
we have had some fantastic speakers
who have made a wonderful contribution
to the School community,so involvement
is very rewarding and not onerous.
If you have any questions please contact
us at [email protected]
Welcome to the 2019 school year!
For those of you who are new to
Mosman High School, we have an active
P&C Wellbeing Committee that works
very closely with Susan Wyatt, the
Principal, and her leadership team.
During the year we meet once or twice a
term to discuss the various wellbeing
initiatives taking place within the School
and to plan interesting speakers who
will talk to parents about a wide variety
of wellbeing related topics. Some of the
speakers, such as Paul Dillon, talk to
students as well as parents, ensuring that
we have a shared language and
understanding within the School
community on important issues.
We would welcome any parents joining
the Wellbeing Committee meetings (see
below for details of our next meeting).
Even if you aren’t able to be part of the
Wellbeing meetings, we hope you will
be able to come along and hear some of
the speakers.
All our work is generously supported by
the P&C.

Air Conditioning
This week we transferred $180,000 to
the Department of Education to pay for
the new air conditioning. Sadly in spite
of the School and the P&C's efforts it's
not going to be in place for this Summer.
The process is moving forward though.
Next Meeting 7pm - 9pm 14 February
The first P&C meeting for 2019 is at
7pm on 14 February in the Library.
The Deputy Principals will be coming
along to explain how they work and to
answer questions on their areas of
responsibility.
We will also be talking about the new
building, what to spend funds on this
year, and discussing the new
timetabling approach.

Positions Vacant
We are desperately seeking some new
people to join the P&C executive. There
is not a lot of work, but what there is is
much easier when shared about. So
please come along to the next meeting
and have a chat about what's involved.
The P&C AGM is in March.
Performing Arts News FROM John Feros, HT Performing Arts
Hello and welcome to another
Performing Arts new year! I would like
to take this opportunity to welcome our
Year 7 and new students and parents to
the school. There are so many
performing opportunities for students
and I would encourage all new students
to get involved in music, film, dance or
drama performances. Audition solo or
with friends. Parents are also encouraged
to get involved and be part of the many
committees.
Looking at the calendar, our first
performance will be Akoostikum. This is
a music concert unplugged that is on
later in the term. Our ensembles will be
rehearsing from week 3 and on March 7
there will be a Hawaii Touring concert.
There will also be Drama and Music
performances as the students complete
their first units.
Our Faculty is really pleased with last
year’s HSC results. Music, Drama and
Entertainment all had exceptional
students. In Drama Katherine Porritt-
Fraser and Leilani Holmes- Skrill scored
97 and a third of the class achieved Band
6, above 90. In Music Harmony
Lovegrove was selected for Encore and
20% of students were ranked in Band 6.
In Extension Music, all students
achieved the highest band. We are now
looking forward to continuing this
momentum and make 2019 even better!

Welcome to another year of making great
music. There is already a great buzz in
the Music Department with musical
sounds emanating from every crack and
crevice. It’s great to hear.
Register Now - Private Tuition and
Ensemble Sign Ups
This is one of the busiest times of the
year for the Ensemble Program. Our
priorities are to register students for
private music tuition and Ensemble
membership so we can get those up and
running.
This year we made it much more
convenient for parents by getting rid of
paper registrations and moving to totally
online forms. If you haven’t registered
your child please do that soon as
rehearsals start next week and rolls need
to be compiled.
Please sign up to save us the additional
work of chasing those who haven’t
responded.

We would appreciate everyone’s
cooperation with signing up quickly
because to finalise it there is a lot of
admin behind the scenes that you don’t
see.
Please ensure you read the Terms and
Conditions when signing up.
Ensembles 2019
All our ensembles will start rehearsals
next week. Keep an eye on website and
facebook for updates and rehearsal
schedules.
We welcome back our ensemble
conductors and welcome two new
ensemble directors.
Returning are: Joern Harris, Naomi
Cooper, Nathan Byron, Leone Ziegler,
Sophia Clark, Angus Gomm, Nic Cecere,
Gavin Libotte and Jeff Longhurst.
Music Committee News FROM Caroline Fechner, Music Committee Chair
Welcome to Ms Lyndal Perry who will
be our Concert Band Director this year.
Lyndal is a French Horn and brass
specialist who has extensive experience
directing concert bands in primary
schools and high schools. She is
looking forward to working with the
Concert Band.
Our Senior Concert Band (previously
Performance Band) and Senior Jazz
Band will be directed by Mr Ray
Cassar. Ray is widely respected as one
of Sydney's finest trumpet players, and
regularly performs with the music
industry's leading artists. He is
proficient on several instruments
including trumpet, piccolo trumpet,
flugelhorn and piano. Experienced in
conducting school bands, Ray brings a
wealth of knowledge and experience to
our ensembles.
Private Tuition
Our young musicians are fortunate to
have access to excellent tutors.
Welcome back to all the talented and
dedicated tutors who encourage all their
students to sound great and to love
playing their instrument. Rates for 30
minute lessons are $40.
Hawaii Tour Ensembles
Just ten weeks before our Hawaii
Tourers depart. Rehearsals started this
week and they are sounding great.
Other initiatives
This year we will be looking at
implementing a few new initiatives to
enhance the program musically and in
operations.
Ensemble Representative
This year we will be asking members of
the ensembles to nominate to be a
leader in their ensemble to assist the
conductor. Tasks may include sorting
music, checking the folders have been
put back in the box in order, helping the
conductor to ensure the roll is marked,
encouraging other band members to set
up and pack up etc. More details on that
in a few weeks.
Chamber Orchestra
Our string ensemble is growing in
numbers each year so we thought we
could invite a few wind players to join
the strings to create a Chamber
Orchestra. We will share more details
when we have a plan in place.
Be Part of the Ensembles Team.
We are looking for parents who can
assist with the operations of the
ensembles. Specifically:
Committee Secretary
BBQ/cake stall coordinator for
concerts
Website coordinator
Ensemble Parent Helpers - assist the
conductor with tasks such as scanning
music
Concert Band Parent Helper
Uniform Coordinator
There are plenty of other tasks that we
could use you help on.

MOSMAN HIGH FLYER FEBRUARY 2019

FROM Henry Chen, English Teacher
Throughout the year, Mosman High
School is invited to a variety of writing
competitions and workshops aimed to
inspire and motivate our students to be
creative in the expression of their
identities and their understanding of the
world. Often, these sessions are
presented in collaboration with the NSW
Education Standards Authority (NESA),
ensuring that students not only have a
good time exploring thought-provoking
topics but are also able to build on their
classroom learning, giving them an edge
in their academic career.
This year, the Sydney Writers' Festival
and NESA are presenting "Student
Sessions 2019"! It is a full-day
workshop with multiple sessions from
which students can create-their-own-
adventure. They have a star-studded
cast of acclaimed writers, award-
winning artists, respected social
commentators and the world's keenest
thought-leaders. Students can explore
topics such as "Hip-Hop and
Shakespeare", "The World AI Made"
and "Find Your Voice, Write Your
Story".
Regardless of what they choose, our
students will have rich opportunities to
build on their classroom learning,
extend their capacity for critical
thinking and be stimulated by the
thoughtful discussion and meaningful
debate that is the Festival's signature
format.
The Festival is held on Wednesday 1
May 2019 at the Carriageworks venue in

Sirius Library Matters
FROM Deborah Mulhall, School Librarian
A warm welcome to 2019 in the school
library – named the Sirius Library after
one of the First Fleet ships.
There is no Planet B.
The entry display upon starting 2019 is an examination of climate and
weather. It is a reflection of many discussions, and the concerns expressed,
by students. We like to provide resources which encourage students to
have informed debates and opinions.
Yr 7 Welcome!
Year 7 students are encouraged to
borrow. We have a “Rule of 3” for
borrowing: 3 fiction and 3 non-fiction
for 3 weeks.
It is a full library!
Many parents are aware that quite a few
senior classes have been moved to
periods “0” and “6”; so that the school
can accommodate all students. This
means that lots of seniors have study
periods during the day. Often we are
quite packed and it is wonderful to see
them all working so hard, even at this
early stage.
Opening Hours
The Library opens at 8am every day
and is open at recess and lunch. The
Library is not, in a general way, open
after school unless there is a lesson –
then there is a teacher here. Sometimes
the library is closed for meetings or
special events but we endeavour to be
as open as possible.
The Year Ahead
We have interesting activities planned
this year – watch this space!
MOSMAN HIGH FLYER FEBRUARY 2019
10
FROM Bianca Glover, English Teacher
Firstly, welcome back to everyone and
happy new year. After a successful
debating year in 2018, I am excited to
see what 2019 brings for Mosman High
in debating. Last year, our year 9 & 10
team made it to the regional quarter-
finals and our year 7 & 8 team
progressed through to the regional
semi-finals. Additionally, our year 7 & 8
students engaged in extra-curricular
coaching through Masters Academy on
Monday afternoons. The results were
pleasing considering some our students
had never debated before!
In 2019, I am happy to announce that
Mosman will be continuing their
Debating News
coaching sessions with Masters
academy! If you are in years 7-10 and
are looking to develop your public
speaking skills and the art of debating,
please sign up on the forms outside the
English staffroom. This will be an extra
-curricular activity held after school
until 4:30pm in the library. I am aware
that many students currently have prior
arrangements with other activities and
will therefore be holding meetings on
Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th
February at lunch 1 in D8. Here I
will discuss preferences with students
that I can pass on to Masters Academy
and organise an official time.
In addition to the coaching, I will also be
looking to create teams for the Premier’s
Debating Challenge which will
commence in the second half of the year.
This competition allows students to
utilise their knowledge from Masters
Academy and allows me to provide both
individual and team feedback to the
students to improve in the future. If you
are interested in debating, please come
sign up at the English staffroom!
Whether experienced or not, you are
most definitely welcome to come help
build the debating community at
Mosman High.

Welcome to TAS 2019
FROM Mark Jones, HT TAS
A warm welcome to a new year of
creativity and skills development in the
TAS Faculty.(Technology & Applied
Studies) We hope you had a fun break
and are looking forward to fully utilizing
the great workshop facilities at Mosman
High.
I would like to welcome our newest
member of staff, Ms. Connolly, who has
been appointed to replace Ms.
Livingstone. Ms. Connolly visited the
school last year to meet Ms. Livingstone
and students so the transition would be as
seamless as possible. This was especially
important for the HSC Textiles class who
had commenced their Major Projects and
have hit the ground running in 2019.
Due to the increase in the number of
TAS classes, another teacher will be
appointed soon after a selection process
is complete. We anticipate this teacher
will concentrate on the IST, Multimedia
and Coding areas of our Faculty.
I wrote extensively about the success of
our HSC TAS students in the last High
Flyer. It was fantastic that Tom
Denby & Theo Dahlstrom had their HSC
Major Works selected for the SHAPE
Exhibition and will be on display from
22nd February to 5th May at the
Powerhouse Museum (MAAS). Also,
that Madison Baird and Ella Bennett
have their Textiles Major works
displayed at the TEXSTYLE Exhibition
which will be at The Muse, TAFE
Ultimo, Harris St. from the 12th to 16th
March. Congratulations to these
students and all candidates in the 2018
HSC. Mosman had 9 students achieve
Band 6 in TAS subjects with the
remainder of the cohort being between
5 & 9.81 standard deviations above
State Averages. Statistically, these are
amazing results and I once again
congratulate each & every HSC
candidate and staff member involved in
these demanding, creative subjects.
An added bonus was Tom Denby and
his Shark Suit being featured in the
Sunday Telegraph on the 20th January.
It’s a great article about the rigors of
Design & Technology as a subject while
reinforcing the importance of researching
and designing to solve real world
problems. Learning by doing and the
pinnacle of Project Based Learning. The
newspaper article is on display in the
Foyer of the front office.
2019 sees the introduction of the new
Technology Syllabus for Years 7 & 8.
Our staff have been fine tuning units of
work during 2018 with the main change
is a focus on the mandatory hours of
coding. You may be aware that Evan
Predavec has, for many years, run the
Coding Club during Tuesday &
Thursday lunch times & after school. His
partner in Code, Ian Davies, has since
retired from his position as his daughter
has finished Year 12. I would like to
thank Ian for his enthusiasm and his
countless hours in supporting our
students with their use of technology.
I’m sure Evan would be keen to hear
from any interested parent or guardian
who has a few hours to spare of an
afternoon and may be interested in
helping out with the Technology group.
Please contact me or Evan if you would
like to help.
Welcome to the new orbit, develop your
skills, Design your Life!
Yr 9 Accelerated Design and Technology Upcycle Market stalls
-Term 4 week 9
The class was provided with a brief: “As emerging designers, you must design and create a collection
of environmentally friendly products that can be showcased and sold at the upcoming Mosman Design market”.
Monies raised will go to a selected charity.
Students raised $650 for our selected charity – Take 3 for the Sea.
Their Mission is to reduce global plastic pollution through education and participation.
“It’s our vision to protect wildlife and conserve oceans, waterways and the environment
from plastic pollution. We provide education, research and hands-on activities to reduce
plastic pollution and promote the transition to a circular economy.”

Welcome back to the 2018 Mosman
High School Gifted and Talented (GAT)

in their competitions.
In 2018 our Year 7 GAT Futsal teams

the competition season. Mosman High
Black are currently sitting first place in
the Northern Beaches Futsal Association

Mosman High Green continue to play
strongly and have moved into joint 3rd

victory over Short Gang 6-1 in the final
game of the 2018 season last year.
The second half of the competition kicks
off next week, running until the end of
Term 1 2019, with both teams looking to
consolidate their strong positions in the

Dear Parents/Students,
Happy New Year to all.
This newsletter is only a brief one as it’s
only the beginning of term and many of
the tertiary institutions are still on a
break. However, there are a few things to
save for the diary:
Careers Expo + Seminars
Mosman High School will once again be
holding its Careers Expo on Thursday
11th April in the School Hall. This is a
wonderful opportunity for students to
start planning post-school whether it is
Tertiary Study, TAFE study, going to a
Private Colleges or perhaps taking a gap
year. Over 50 providers will be in
attendance to talk to students and
parents. All the Major Universities,
Private Colleges, TAFE, The Defence
Force, Overseas study organisations,
Volunteering organisations, NESA and
Training Organisations will be at
Mosman High to provide course and
career information to students. Further
details will be forthcoming.
Defence Force News
Defence Force Recruiting Sydney will be
conducting Information Sessions in
2019.
Anyone who is interested in a career in
the Australian Defence Force is
encouraged to attend to:
Find out more information about the
recruiting process
Ask any questions about different
careers available and the different
pathways
Speak to current serving members
The sessions for February 2019 will be
from 6.30 – 8.30 pm and are as
follows:
14 Feb - STEM Careers
18 Feb - Officers
19 Feb - Army Reserve
21 Feb - Engineering Careers

Job Jump Website
The school subscribes to a fantastic
website, Job Jump. Parents and
Students are welcome to join. There
are videos, many careers explained,
where to study, the ATAR required,
salaries, subject choices, a quiz and
much more. I would recommend the
Mosman High community to access
this website by typing in MOSMAN
HIGH SCHOOL as the username and
“bunny” is the password.
HSC 2018
Congratulations to the Class of 2018
on pleasing results. Many students
received fantastic results and offers to
their institution of choice. To those
students who were disappointed with
their ATAR, remember there are many
other pathways to pursue to achieve
your career aspirations. We look
forward in following their progress in
the years ahead.
Early Entry to University
A number of students have come to see
me re Early Entry to University. These
usually open in May and I will be
informing them when these Schemes
open. One popular scheme is Macquarie
University’s Global Leadership Program.
Students download their Year 11 reports
and demonstrate extra-curricular/
leadership activities. A number of
students were informed of their place at
University in June of that year!!
Work Experience for Year 10 Students
Any Year 10 student who is
contemplating doing one or two weeks of
Work Experience this year are to come
and see me. Work Experience is a great
opportunity for students to go to a
workplace and shadow a professional and
see if they would enjoy pursuing such a
career in the future. The only stipulation
is students cannot do work experience
during examination or assessment
periods.
There are forms to be completed. There
are many organisations willing to take
Mosman High students as they have a
good reputation.
Please call me or send me an email if you
would like to discuss.
