ACTIVE HIGHWAY SYSTEM

CONTENTS

Introduction Why do we need it ? Causes of serious accidents How AHS helps ? Advantages of System Conclusion

INTRODUCTION

• Active Highway System is based on existing popular technologies for traffic congestion detection and management in real-time on state and national highways .

• The aim of this system is to design a complete strategy to devise an effective scheme for control management of congestion using Active RFID and Embedded technology.

• It also makes use of concepts of road building and material choices so that the system remains structurally sound .

WHY DO WE NEED IT ?

• To reduce over speeding and fatal car crashes.• Overcome traffic jamming• To provide efficient Highway Toll Charge

System.• To prevent car thefts.• Ultimately it is for effective management to

control congestion ensuring smooth traffic flow.

CAUSES OF SERIOUS ACCIDENTS

Reasons

Over SpeedingImproper Lighting during night Driver NegligenceOther Factors

HOW AHS HELPS ?

• Automatic Speed Limiter

• Intelligent Illumination System

• Continuous monitoring of the car and the driver to ensure he is in proper senses while driving

• Automatic Highway gates & Tolls

• Tracking of vehicle to reduce thefts

AUTOMATIC SPEED LIMITER• The Embedded system in the car which acts as master keeps real-time

data of the vital statistics of the car such as speed , distance travelled during the trip, tire pressure and surrounding car environment .

• The master system interacts with tags placed on the divider of the highways and then extracts essential information on limits imposed by the authority .

• As soon as the car enters a speed control zone the tag placed at the start of the zone causes the Multi Information Display (MID) system to alert the driver about the speed limit and restrict the speed below the specified limit .

• The speed limit keeps on changing as per the driver enters different zones

INTELLIGENT ILLUMINATION SYSTEM

• This system provides more focused beam to illuminate the path ahead but in a way that it does dazzle or glare the eyes of the driver of other car .

• This system is designed in such a way that the entire light beam before leaving the headlight passes through a perforated attachment which is master system controlled.

• While on a bend the light beam pre-follow the path of bend and diverge at the onset of a round about .

• If a car crosses the TEST CAR or is in front of the TEST CAR then the light beam illuminating the path vary so that the intensity on the TEST CAR is less and other areas remain sharply illuminated .

AUTOMATIC HIGHWAY GATE AND TOLL

• Highway Toll collection system in conventional mode is time consuming and inefficient , what this system proposes is to place overhead hangings at the toll point .

• Vehicles should be made equipped with RFID tags which contain not only the information of the vehicle ( its make , model , owner , destination ) but also e-pay currency of the car .

• Pre-Paid charging of the currency can be done .

• As the vehicle passes the system automatically deducts the requisite amount from the currency capability of the vehicle .

• Gates will be dropped if the driver fails to stop or has insufficient balance .

CAR TRACKING AND NEAR SPACE DETECTION • This system since employs the use of receiver tags at appropriate distance

on the highway and transmitter tags on the vehicle . Each tag on vehicle will have it’s own characteristic signature .

• This signature will be read by the closest receiving tag on the highway and a stolen car can be easily located if it is present on the highway .

• To keep accidents due to driver negligence at minimum cameras on the rear view mirror will track the driver and his physical condition.

• Other one will keep track of the traffic on the road and will alert the driver if he gets distracted or any car approaches in a dangerous manner .

Advantages of System• Helps in detection of congestion at any road leading to a junction.

• Effective management to control that congestion ensuring smooth traffic flow.

• Discourages wastage of fuel and air pollution due to vehicles trapped in jam.

• Reducing thefts by providing instantaneous tracking of vehicles.

• Cost effective, easily manageable and reliable.

Conclusion• This method provides comprehensive way of congestion detection and

management as a whole while most other methods are restricted only to congestion detection.

• There are further scope of enhancement and extension of this idea to improve congestion management process ensuring smooth traffic flow in city in busy hours

• This project is multifunctional, and much more efficient than the current traditional systems.
