Class Title: Star Dance Designed By: Margaret Bendig Teacher: Margaret Bendig

Star Dance is a study in the difference in the use of a single color using different threads, stitches, direction of stitches and the reflection of light to create. The original is stitched with Soie d’Alger silk and some specialty threads. The center star is a revolving set of patterns with metallic threads to add to the definition of the stitches. The background of the design is composed of many different star patterns using two values of blue silk with the addition of white Sparkle Rays. This slice of the sky reminds me of and was inspired by the early morning sky along the central west coast of California as dawn is breaking and the stars are beginning to fade into the day. Kit Contents: My Star Dance is stitched with three colors of Au Ver a Soie Silk, Kreinik Braids, Gloriana Princess Perle, Petite Sparkle Rays and Neon Rays on 18 count canvas. The alternate choices are: • 18 count canvas with cotton floss • 24 count congress with silk floss • 24 count congress with cotton floss Anchor floss is provided in the cotton floss alternates. Because Petite Sparkle Rays is too heavy for congress cloth, extra Kreinik braid is included to replace that thread in the congress cloth kits.

Student Provides: 15" stretcher bars (18 count) or 14" stretcher bars (24 count)

Class Title: Farmers' Market Designed By: Kim Sanders Teacher: Kim Sanders

Inspired by a child minding her family's stall at the Farmers' Market, this piece captures the bounty of late summer flowers and vegetables. A variety of raised and padded techniques will challenge the student with previous surface embroidery experience. Needle lace is worked directly on the piece over felt, detached over a cordonnet, and detached over wrapped wire. Students will work the detached needle lace elements on a custom made needle lace pad. Using two different sizes of pearl cotton provides the opportunity for different degrees of texture. The child's braid is simply braided floss and can be omitted should the embroiderer prefer the subject to be a boy. Padding is used extensively under long and short shading, burden stitch and satin stitch to create a bas relief embroidery. Wrapped or buttonhole covered wire, wrapped beads and embroidered beads increase the dimensionality of the piece.

Class Title: Sampling of Color Designed By: Jennifer Riefenberg Teacher: Jennifer Riefenberg

This workshop presents new ways to approach compound stitches and apply new concepts and methods to the painted- or unpainted-canvas. A notebook canvas is used for experimentation and learning of color concepts and color effects. What color combinations can be used, and how to come up with threads and colors for an entirely new look are explored. A unique approach to the painted canvas is presented, expanding the possibilities and options of the same. I stayed with a minimal number of color choices and threads to stitch the notebook sampler. Introducing more color choices can lead to disharmony in the sampler as well as lead to confusion. It is much easier to take on one or two controlled concepts and study those prior to introducing other, more complex concepts.

You are strongly encouraged to pick and choose your own stitches and colors to complete the canvas. You may also bring some of your own threads for experimentation. If so, I recommend threads like #4 Kreinik metallic or #8 or #12 perle or similar weights. Solids, overdyed, or spacedyed threads are welcome.

May you enjoy a new and varied approach to the painted canvas as you expand your lnowledge of color. Student Provides: Stretcher bars to match canvas (8” x 8”) – preassembled for class, tacks or staples to attach canvas to stretcher bars, embroidery scissors, magnification, frame weight or stand, other basic stitching supplies.

Amee Sweet McNamara

Ask Amee K. Sweet-McNamara why her fine-art jewelry business is called “Amee Runs with Scissors,’’ and she usually just laughs and says, “Because it sounds a whole lot sexier than ‘Amee Eats Paste.’” Working out of her New Hampshire home, Sweet-McNamara makes one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable-art textile-jewelry using a technique called “Soutache & Bead Embroidery” which involves hand-stitching yards and yards of soutache braid and hundreds of tiny beads.

Bobbi Norris

Bobbi Norris has stitched, embroidered and created for as long as she can remember, making her first dress in second grade. Bobbi estimates that nearly everything sheI owned during high school had some type of embroidery on it. She fell in love with counted cross-stitch as a young adult and now has a growing need to thread a beading needle. Bobbi is an active member of the Houston Embroiderers’ Guild, and has taught and designed beading projects and programs for her chapter and local needlework. Now with encouragement from friends, Bobbi is spreading her love of beading to others.

Catherine Theron

Catherine was born and raised in a Connecticut household filled with antique quilts and a lovely New England sampler created by one if her great great great grandmothers. Surrounded by two grandmothers who sewed, stitched crewel and canvas pieces, crocheted, and knitted; becoming a passionate needlewoman was an easy career path for Catherine. Catherine has been designing counted thread needlework for more than 30 years under the company name Theron Traditions and was a founding partner in the popular thread company The Gentle Art. Her interests lie primarily in samplers and the many stitches used to create these beautiful pieces. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge of various counted thread stitches. Her pieces range from 17 Century inspired band samplers to primitive American-style pictorial samplers. She has never met a sampler or a sampler stitch she didn't love! Catherine has caught for EGA and ANG Chapters, EGA Regional Seminars, sampler guilds, private groups, museums, and wholesale trade shows. I am passionate about sharing what I know. I approach teaching from the understanding that different people learn in different ways. I strive to provide clear written instructions with step by step color photos, orally explain the technique with color coded visual aids, demonstrate stitches and techniques, and work one on one with each student as they practice their techniques.”

Cynthia Hambrick

She continued on to teach more advanced classes as the years progressed. Cynthia has taught at many EGA events including National and Regional Seminars. Cynthia's background in computer programming and mathematics (BBA in Information Science from the University of Texas with a focus on math) was excellent training for developing very detailed instructions for her patterns. Students also appreciate Cynthia's attention to detail as her kits contain everything needed to complete the project, including dowels, tins, fringe beads and other hard to locate items. Cynthia says "I particularly enjoy creating 3 dimensional shaped pieces such as Christmas ornaments, vessels and especially boxes! "

And no trip to San Marcos would be complete without a ride on a glass bottom boat! We’ll finish our

tour with lunch at The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (formerly Aquarena Springs)

and a ride on a glass bottom boat. Unforgettable attractions to experience at this beautiful nature park

include a phenomenal underwater perspective of Spring Lake (headwaters of the San Marcos River),

hundreds of bubbling springs, archeological site, historical landmarks, and more. Close-up view of

fish, turtles, prawns and species found ONLY in Spring Lake or the San Marcos River, such as the

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR NAME TAG. This helps the teacher identify you by name.

BE ON TIME. Arrive early enough to set up and be ready when class starts. This includes returning

from breaks or lunch on time. Notify the teacher and the class angel if you will be late or have to

leave class early.

LISTEN TO THE TEACHER. If you don’t understand, or need help, ask for help from the teacher, not

your stitching neighbor.

ASK QUESTIONS…BUT, remember this is a group project. Do not monopolize the teacher’s time or

discuss unrelated personal needlework projects.

KEEP CONVERSATION TO A MINIMUM. Lots of talking is distracting to the teacher and

classmates.

RESPECT COPYRIGHT LAWS. Workshop directions are not to be copied or taught without written

permission from the teacher.

NO SMOKING, FOOD OR DRINK is allowed in the work or display areas. Don’t touch other’s

needlework unless invited to do so and then only if your hands are clean.

NO PERFUME or smelly lotion. Many people are allergic to perfumes.

DO NOT VISIT OTHER CLASSROOMS during the class period. Such visits are disruptive to the

teacher and to the students.

NO EXTENSION CORDS ALLOWED. All student electronics, including task lights, used in the

classrooms must be battery operated.

CELL PHONES should be turned off or set to silent or vibrate. If you must take a phone call while in

class, exit the classroom before starting your conversation.

MERCHANDISE NIGHT – Wednesday Night

Merchandise Night is one of the most popular events at seminar. We’ve invited vendors to display and sell merchandise related to needlework: patterns, kits, fabrics, threads, beads, tools, books,

accessories, supplies, etc. Chapters and individuals are also invited to sell their needlework related items.

It is a great opportunity to see items that may not be available in your area. This event is also open to

the public, so invite your friends!

Vendors will be listed in the Seminar Handbook.

Individual advertisements are available to purchase in the Handbook.

When: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 from 7:00 to 9:00

Cost: If you would like to sell at Merchandise Night, tables can be reserved for $40. Multiple tables may be rented. Two chairs per table will be provided. You may request table(s) at time of

registration, or may contact: Pat at 254-537-3714 for additional information.

This is an opportunity for chapters to raise funds for their chapter by creating a basket of needlework-related items. Chapters sign up to participate and their basket is brought to seminar and placed in a

designated room.

Tickets are purchased by seminar attendees and put in a container assigned to the basket they want to win. All the money collected goes back to the participating chapter.

The drawing for each basket will be held at the Friday night banquet (June 12, 2020). Winners do not

need to be present to win, but someone must pick up the basket for them.

The room with all the baskets will be open at designated hours during the seminar.

When opportunity knocks, don't be the one who says: "Can somebody get that?"

Would you like some of your stash to become part of someone else's stash?

One of the many things that bind needle workers together is the need to manage our stashes. We are always looking to add to and/or refine (reduce) our stashes! Here is your opportunity to sell your stash to a market of around 200 needlework lovers looking to add to their collections of needlework items. This particular sale is open to Seminar participants and to the public.

Stash Sales at SCR Seminars are a great fundraiser for Chapters. They are also a really nice way to recoup some of the costs involved with creating your personal stash.

To participate in this Stash for Cash, here are the particulars: When: Thursday, June 11, 2020 from 7:00 to 9:00 Cost: $30.00 for a full table/$20.00 for ½ table. Each table measures 6 feet by 30 inches, and will be draped. Two chairs per table will be provided. You may rent as many tables as you wish! You may request table(s) at time of registration, or may contact Kay at [email protected] or (210) 481-0445 for more information.
