In contrast to, say, the academ-ic requirements of highschool, college courses presenta much heavier, much more
consistent workload. And witheverything else that college stu-dents have to manage -- jobs, per-sonal life, relationships, physicalhealth, cocurricular obligations -- itcan sometimes seem like gettingyour homework done isMission:Impossible. At the sametime, however, not getting yourwork done is a recipe for disaster. So what tips and tricks can you useto get your homework done in col-lege?
Put all major assignments andtheir due dates in your time man-agement system. A key part ofstaying on top of your homework isknowing what's coming; no one, after all, wants to realize onTuesday that they have a majormidterm on Thursday. To avoidsurprising yourself, make sure allof your major homework assign-ments and their due dates are doc-umented in your calendar. Thatway, you won't inadvertently sabo-tage your own success simplybecause you've mismanaged yourtime.
Schedule a time to do homeworkeach week -- and keep thatappointment. Telling yourself allweek that you have to "get yourhomework done" doesn't give youany specifics, leaves you cramming
at the last minute, and alwaysleaves you feeling like you shouldbe doing something else (i.e., thathomework hanging over yourhead). If you schedule time --appointments with your homeworkand reading, in a way -- into yourcalendar, and you make sure youkeep those appointments, you'llhave a great system going. You'llhave the time allocated in youralready-too-busy schedule, you'llreduce your stress by knowingwhen, exactly, your homework willbe done, and you'll be better ableto enjoy whatever else you haveplanned since you'll know yourhomework is already taken care of.
Use small increments of time
whenever possible. You know that20-minute bus ride you have toand from campus every day? Well, that's 40 minutes a day, 5 days aweek ... which means that if youdid some reading during the ride, you'd get more than 3 hours ofhomework done during your com-mute. Those little increments canadd up: 30 minutes between class-es here, 10 minutes waiting for afriend there. Be smart aboutsneaking in small bits of home-work so that you can conquer thebigger assignments piece by piece.
Understand that you can'talways get all your homeworkdone. One of the biggest skills tolearn in college is how to gaugewhat you can't get done. Becausesometimes, there really is only somany hours in a day, and the basiclaws of physics means you can'taccomplish everything on your to-do list. If you just can't get all yourhomework done, make some smartdecisions about how to choosewhat to do and what to leavebehind. Are you doing great in oneof your classes, and skipping thereading one week shouldn't hurttoo much? Are you failing another and defi-nitely need to focus your efforts there?
Don't get caught up in the get-caught-up trap. If you fall behindon your homework, it's easy tothink -- and hope -- that you'll beable to catch up. So you'll set a
plan to catch up, but the more youtry to catch up, the more you fallbehind. If you're falling behind onyour reading and are feeling over-whelmed, give yourself permissionto start anew. Figure out what youneed to get done for your nextassignment or class, and get itdone. It's easier to cover the mate-rial you missed when you're study-ing for an exam in the future thanit is to fall further and furtherbehind right now.
Use class and other resources tohelp make doing your homeworkmore productive and efficient. Youmight, for example, think that youdon't need to go to class becausethe professor only covers what'salready been addressed in thereading. Not true! You shouldalways go to class -- for a variety ofreasons -- and doing so can makeyour homework load lighter. You'llbetter understand the material, bebetter able to absorb the work youdo out of class, be better preparedfor upcoming exams (thereby sav-ing you studying time and improv-ing your academic performance),and overall just have a better mas-tery of the material. Additionally, use your professor's office hours ortime in an academic support centerto reinforce what you've learnedthrough your homework assign-ments. Doing homework shouldn'tjust be a to-do item on your list; itshould be an essential part of yourcollege academic experience.

Enchanting Africa: Africa isan enchanting country. It is trulyan amazing place to see wildlife. In essence, what I really lovedabout Africa is its sheer personali-ty where each creature seems tohave its own ancient and time-honored place in the great circleof life. The landscape of Africa isalso ever-changing, but subtly andcontinuously. Its not uncommon tohave rain clouds build up on theright side of the vehicle whilst theleft side sports blue skies upto thehorizon. This photo exhibition, with photos
printed on Hahnemuhleacrchivalpaper and canvas, is really anattempt to place before the view-ers, a glimpse into the personalityand moods of the African wilder-ness of the Serengeti and MasaMara area. It would of course havebeen possible to showcase each
and every animal in a clinical andtechnically exemplary fashion, butsuch would not do justice to thesoul of Africa. The images in thisexhibition have been selectedmainly on the basis of their emo-tional impact on me.The pre-dawn view of the Elephantmunching away at the grass whilethe vast, uncaring herd of migrat-ing wildebeest keeps ploddingaway through the day, the gentlecaress given by a lion cub to hermother, the buffalo weavers sittingon the giraffe as if they own it, theLion King gazing majesticallydown on his domain. These arethememories of this “EnchantingAfrica”that have been etched inmy mind, and I have attempted tobring these moments to you.WHERE: Jehangir Art GalleryWHEN: Till January 16thTIME: 1100 hours to 1900 hours
