Last year my wife Amy and I thought we were going to just another out of town Bar Mitzvah weekend. Naturally, we were excited to be in Minneapolis for our old friends’ wonderful occasion but never dreamed we would be affected in such an unusual way.

Like so many modern families, the parents were divorced. But in this case the family dynamics had been tested beyond measure. After the divorce the father had moved far away to South Africa, and when he did finally return to the country after several years, he soon became terminally ill with a brain tumor.

In the midst of this incredibly challenging situation, we witnessed a fortunate and amazing life-altering relationship between the Bar Mitzvah boy and his “Jewish Big Brother.” As Amy and I got to know this “Big Brother,” a fine young man in his 30’s, we

simultaneously wondered if such a program existed in Kansas City.

We soon found out that although Kansas City had no such program, many other U.S. cities did. After about a year, we’re proud that we now have Kansas City Jewish Big Brothers & Sisters. With the great support of the Greater Kansas City Big Brothers & Sisters and Jewish Family Services, the program is now a reality.

However, we have also learned that there is a great need in our community. We do not have enough “Bigs” to match with “Littles.” We’ve learned that a wide age-range of adults and married couples can match well with these “Littles.” What is needed is an interest and a relatively small weekly commitment to a young person’s life. It can have a huge impact, one which goes both ways. If you can help, please contact Lucia Harding at 816-777-2891 or go to www.jewishbigbrothersbigsisterskc.org.

Join us for Daily & Shabbat Services

The evening begins with two minha services: a traditional and a learner’s service. The celebration will include a catered dairy buffet dinner followed by a keynote and discussion facilitated by noted scholar, Rabbi Neil Gillman, followed by study sessions. A sunrise service and breakfast will conclude this holiday celebration. For information or to make reservations (required for dinner) contact, Annette Fish at [email protected] or 913-327-4622.

o f f t h e b i m aIn my last two messages, I addressed the changes that Beth Shalom will experience in the coming year. Since this will, in all likelihood, be my last off the bima message, I want to speak of one more change that is of a personal nature.

In order to make Rabbi Tobin’s transition as smooth as possible, I have decided to not do any life cycle events after July 1. This “cold turkey” or “tough love” approach will be the best way to make the change without picking and choosing and playing favorites. It will also afford Rabbi Tobin the opportunity to get to know the congregants and for you to know him. Life cycle moments are key to this in the rabbinate. The only exception to this policy will be when I will provide coverage for the Rabbi when he is away (as will be the case from July 20-24 this summer.) I hope that you understand the reasons for this decision and will not think it too harsh. Indeed, both Linda and I hope to be able to attend many of your events when we are in town as congregants and friends. We are eager for this opportunity.

Many have asked about my summer schedule and beyond. I will conclude my official work with the congregation

My Version of “Tough Love”on June 30. During a portion of July, I will be working with Rabbi Tobin to aid in his transition to the new position and helping to acclimate him to his new rabbinic surroundings. Linda and I will take some personal time from the end of July through August and I will begin my duties with JCRB/AJC and St. Lukes Hospital Spirituality and Wellness Department after Labor Day. This will afford us the opportunity to wind down and also spend some time with our family (especially the newest additions.)

I know that everyone will do her/his best to assist Rabbi Tobin, Lisa and their children in making a smooth and pleasant transition to Kansas City. I also hope that everyone will give full support to him, as he becomes the new senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Shalom.

We hope that you have a very relaxing and healthy summer.

Eighteen months of study will culminate in a special celebration when the Adult B’nai Mitzvah class will be called to the Torah on Shabbat morning, June 21. To prepare for this occasion, the ten members of the class have been studying with Rabbi Alan Cohen, Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz, Hazzan Rob Menes, Stef Williams and Linda Cohen.

The members of the Adult B’nai Mitzvah class never had a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at the age of thirteen, but each will fulfill that goal on Shabbat morning, June 21, when the class conducts the entire Shabbat morning service beginning at 9:30 a.m. The congregation and public are invited to worship with the families and attend the Kiddush luncheon following services. The luncheon is sponsored by the Adult B’nai Mitzvah class.

This is the time of year for commencements and confirmations! Is there a friend or relative whom you wish to honor? The Sisterhood continues to offer “Book of Remembrance” tribute cards to recognize important life events, offer congratulations or support to relatives and friends or to honor someone’s memory. These cards are available in the Gift Shop for a donation of $5 or six cards for $25. Cards can also be requested by telephone or email; contact Maxine Grossman at 913-338-2912 or email her at [email protected]. For many years, Sisterhood maintained an actual hard-cover Book of Remembrance in which all “honor and memory” cards were permanently recorded. As of May 15 this year, that Book has been reactivated. Any card ordered from Maxine will be appropriately recorded. If you purchase cards at the Gift Shop to send yourself, you may call Maxine and ask her to record the card in the permanent Book of Remembrance. Funds raised through Book of Remembrance cards support Sisterhood projects benefiting the synagogue and religious school.

Summer Jewish Learning

Polsky Religious SchoolPatti Kroll, Director of Education | [email protected] | 913-647-7290

Classes at the Polsky Religious School have ended for this school year, but that does not mean that Jewish learning needs to stop over the summer. Summer time offers many opportunities for Jewish experiences that extend well beyond the classroom. When asking parents what their priorities are for Jewish learning for their children, the number one response is learning Hebrew and prayers and being familiar with the worship services. Summer offers a great time for reviewing and reinforcing Hebrew using both the Hebrew books and DVDs that have gone home. Are you looking for something to do on a Shabbat morning? How about joining us at services? They are a great way to practice your Hebrew and become familiar with the flow of the service.

Family trips are another way to continue Jewish practice. Bring Shabbat candles, a Kiddush cup and hallah and celebrate Shabbat in another city. Look for Jewish sites as you travel, including places to eat. If you are going to the ocean or the mountains, say the appropriate blessing for these natural wonders.

The pace of the summer also allows for plenty of reading time, including books of Jewish content. We have a wonderful selection of books in our synagogue library for adults and children, and I am sure our librarian, Fran Wolf, would be thrilled to help you find some summer reading.

Summer should include Jewish time. A little creativity and pre-planning can make summer and beyond a time of quality learning.

For those adults who do not know Hebrew or would like to increase their skills, the Polsky Religious School will be offering adult Hebrew classes this fall on Sundays and Wednesdays during religious school hours. What stronger message can you give on the importance of education than your own commitment to learn? There will be two classes offered each of those days - a class for beginners and a class for those who are familiar with the Hebrew alphabet but want to improve their skills. These classes will be taught by Linda Cohen and we will offer child care. More information and registration will be available in August.

s t r a i g h t t a l kCommunity – What does it mean? In our consumer oriented society we tend to view the world around us in terms of how economically our needs are met, as if the world is one big shopping mall. However, the consumer model breaks down when it comes to the most important aspects of our lives: health, family and community.

We do not shop for the cheapest doctor. And who can put a price on our children? Similarly, in our tradition, community is so fundamental to our well being that, short of capital punishment, the ultimate sentence is to be cut off from the community. Community, too, cannot be left to a consumer approach.

The community we establish defines us to others, and is fundamental to how we view ourselves. The value of a

community is not what it costs us but what we put into it, to paraphrase President Kennedy. We will have a unique opportunity to build our community at Beth Shalom over the next few years. Rabbi Cohen has helped us build a solid foundation. We wish him well as he embarks upon the next stage of his life. Rabbi Tobin brings fresh energy and he will too take us to our next stage and beyond. Help us take a fresh look at our programs and services. We have started developing a beautiful new facility. Help us make it a reality and fill the holy spaces we create with holy times. I invite you. Find your role to play in all this and you will benefit.

As always, I invite your comments. To the officers, board and committee chair-people and all the rest of you who are heavily involved already, you have our thanks. You already know the benefits.

Our grandparents made plans to insure that the synagogue would be here for us and our children. Do you in turn wish to help insure that Beth Shalom will be here for future generations to come? Do you want to insure that the religious school, the preschool, the cemetery or some of our other educational programs will be here for them? We each can help do so by leaving a lasting legacy in the form of an estate bequest of a fraction of our estate. No gift is too small. Tax law provisions even allow us to make gifts now and enjoy income as long as it is needed. Your financial advisor can explain what structure will work best for you. We can help acquaint you with our various program areas. For more information contact Joel Krichiver, executive director, [email protected] or 913-647-7293.

Legacy EndowmentsThe transition committee, under chairperson Diane Azorsky is pleased to welcome the Tobin family into the Beth Shalom family and into the Kansas City community. Plans are being made to insure that everyone in the community has an opportunity to have contact with our new rabbi. One of Rabbi Tobin’s goals is to personally meet and know each individual in the congregation as quickly as possible. Through our personal storytelling, he intends to become knowledgeable about our history, culture and the pulse of our congregation, to allow him to best lead our congregation into the future. Join us Friday, July 4 at Lamar for Rabbi Tobin and his family’s first Shabbat at Beth Shalom. See the enclosed flyer and the full article on page 1.

The end of the year activities have kept us busy during this final month of preschool. The children celebrated Israel, released their butterflies and enjoyed the end of year picnic with their friends and family. Have a wonderful summer!

For those of you who will be joining us for Camp Beth Shalom, we look forward to seeing you on June 23.

We feel every member of Beth Shalom who wants to recite kaddish as a mourner or for a yahrzeit has the right to a daily minyan at Beth Shalom. Every member of Beth Shalom who is not a mourner or saying kaddish for a yahrzeit has a responsibility to do their part to help ensure a daily minyan, too. Minyan Maker is all about making sure there is a minyan each and every morning and evening at Beth Shalom, without exception.

Before Minyan Maker was established, Beth Shalom was experiencing, with increasing frequency, services failing to draw the requisite 10 adult Jews needed for a minyan. The problem became particularly acute in the morning. Minyan Maker was devised to counter this problem.

I understand we need to do something about the minyan, but why Minyan Maker?

The key to Minyan Maker’s success is keeping track as closely as humanly possible of who will be attending each service.

Tracking attendance is the only way to know when we need to recruit extra daveners (adult Jews) and when we don’t.

What do I need to do to participate?

If you plan to attend daily services (not Shabbat or holiday mornings) in the morning or evening, you should sign in to let the Minyan Maker committee know your plans.

Go to www.minyanmaker.com, contact the ritual office or call Blanche Sosland at 913-488-1116 (for morning services) or Marlene Katz 913-681-0840 (for evening services). Sign in on the dates you plan to attend at the beginning of each month and be sure to press the submit button. Or, let Blanche or Marlene know your plans and they will sign you in. Please update your schedule as needed if your plans change.

Next month we will answer more questions about Minyan Maker.

Why Do We Need Minyan Maker?

Mystery CongregantPlease note: There are imbedded clues within this month’s Mystery Congregant. The clues will help you identify the Mystery Congregant.

When you attend services, a meeting or are in the synagogue for any reason, look around you and see who you see. This month’s Mystery Congregant is a multigenerational congregant. He and his family can be seen quite frequently at school and synagogue events. His favorite things about Beth Shalom are the warmth of the congregation and the willingness to lend a hand when needed. As a youth, he

could be seen at Camp Sabra, Herzl Camp and Boy Scout Camp. He was and still is an avid reader, but doubts that he will be reading as much in the near future as he has taken over other activities over which he must preside. He is also a photographer and likes art films. A little-known fact about this month’s Mystery Congregant is that he is a triathlete and has taken part in the Jewish Community Center triathlon. Look around and see if you can identify this month’s Mystery Congregant. It might also help if you like the color “red”.
