Apprenticeships typically take between one and four years to complete, depending on the type of Apprenticeship and the level. The length of time taken will depend on the ability of the individual Apprentice and the employer’s requirements.

When you’ve finished training, you can carry on working, move to another job in the same sector or maybe stay where you are and get promoted. Many of our Apprentices stay on with their employer in their choice of work.

You also have the opportunity go on to study higher for a degree at university.

In order to do an Apprenticeship you need a job as well as a training provider or college – there are two ways of applying:

1 Contact employers with your CV to ask if they would be willing to take you on as an Apprentice and apply to the Institute via www.lincs2.co.uk or www.grimsby.ac.uk/apprenticeships.

We will be able to discuss looking for vacancies with you if necessary.

2 Visit www.apprenticeships.gov.uk and click on ‘How to Apply’ and then ‘Find and apply for Apprenticeships’. From there follow the step by step instructions to search and apply for vacancies.

Once you have applied for an Apprenticeship with us, here are the next steps you will take:

• Depending on your chosen vocation you may be required to take a Vocational Assessment.

• Following this you will be invited for an interview. At the interview we will offer advice and assistance on marketing yourself to prospective employers and ways in which you may make yourself more employable. Once successfully interviewed, you may be matched with any employer vacancy that we would consider to be suitable. Please note, this may not happen immediately.

• You will then be interviewed by the employer and may be required to undergo a work trial. If this is successful and you and the employer are happy, you will hopefully be offered a start date.

• An induction at The Grimsby Institute will be arranged to learn about basic Health and Safety as well as the rules and procedures for Workbased Apprenticeships. The employer will also induct you into the job and will cover Health and Safety. Terms and conditions of employment will be agreed and you will attend your workplace four days a week (or equivalent).

• You will come into the Grimsby Institute one day per week (or equivalent) to learn essential underpinning knowledge and for practical experience towards the qualification. A Workbased Assessor will visit you in your workplace and will assess your competency and offer advice and guidance with your NVQ.

• Approximately every eight weeks your progress will be reviewed by a Workbased Assessor.

• Once your qualification has been completed and verified as satisfactory then you will be awarded your Apprenticeship certificate.

Business and Administration Administrators handle the day-to-day tasks in an office to make sure things run smoothly. The term ‘administration’ covers roles that involve organising people and resources, including Executive Assistants, Secretaries, Office Supervisors and Data Entry Clerks. Without them, information would be hard to find and businesses would be less productive.

As an Intermediate or Advanced Business Administration Apprentice, your exact duties will depend on your employer. It’s likely that you’ll be working with a team or a member of staff to handle various tasks. You may be typing up board meeting documents, putting together information on spreadsheets, sending the daily post, co-ordinating events or even negotiating with customers. This type of work requires a strong sense of responsibility, accuracy and attention to detail.

One of the great things about business and administration is that you can work almost anywhere. Administration roles are an excellent starting point to move into management once you have more experience.

Delivery Method:Training is delivered in the work place and an Assessor will monitor your progress and conduct assessments.

Hairdressing & Beauty TherapyLiv AllotHairdressing ApprenticeSeventeen-year-old Liv Allott, a former pupil at Humberston School, originally decided to take the A Level route, but quickly realised she preferred a practical approach to learning, and applied for an Apprenticeship in Hairdressing.

“All of my friends we’re at the Grimsby Institute and they were telling me how good it was and how much work they were getting done and I realised it was time for a change. I want to be a qualified Hairdresser and you learn more being on the shop floor, observing how everyone works, rather than being sat in a classroom.

“I shampoo, make clients’ refreshments, make appointments and I help with blow drying and putting colours on - I’m learning how to do things the salon way. I go to the Institute one day each week and learn things like how to do sets, and then I come back to the salon and practice them.

“I really enjoy what I’m doing and I find that when I enjoy something it makes it easier. I love learning now because I enjoy it.”

HospitalityDanielle CookHospitality Apprentice

Danielle started working part-time and gradually built up to more hours. It was suggested that she should consider getting some qualifications whilst working in the kitchen and getting on-the-job training. Danielle’s employer hopes she will soon be running the kitchen herself; she is already doing the ordering and deciding what specials will be on the menu.

“If I hadn’t gone to the Grimsby Institute I don’t think I would have been able to do any of this. One day I’d like to move to Australia, I’ve got family out there, and open my own tea room there. When I left school I didn’t think I’d be doing what I’m doing now. It’s easier to learn this way because you are not bombarded with work and you can take it at your own pace.

“My assessments are done using Smart Assessor, which means I can keep in contact with my Assessor even when I’m not at the Institute, and it’s easy to see what work I’ve done and what work I’ve still got to do.”
