1The Book of Genesis

Genesis - introduction

AuthorIt is for certain that God is the ultimate author of the entirity of the

Bible. 2 Peter 1:20-21 - “knowing this first, that d no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for eprophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” Moses is the author of the book. John 7:19; Luke 16:31. Moses was indeed fully capable of undertaking such a monumental task. He was educated in all the great learning of the Egyptians Acts 7:22. God inspired Moses for the task or as 2 Tim. 3:16 says he breathed it into the mind of Moses.

Background

The name Genesis means “orgin, or “source” or “beginning” This name is taken from the Greek Old Testament. The Hebrew name for the book is Bereshith, which means in the beginning. The Old Testa-ment was almost all written in Hebrew, and Bereshith is the first word in Genesis. Genessis deals with history from the creation to the death of Joseph. It is scientifically and archaeologically accurate. The book gives to us a divinely inspired accout of direct creation: Adam’s sin and dis-obedience’ the means of recovery through sacrifice and of the promised seed - the Messiah’ and an account of the state of the Spiritual seed of faith in the time of the patriarchs, both before and after the flood to the time of Joseph in Egypt. The book starts with life (1:20-28) and ends with a coffin (50:26). Genesis divides itself into two distinct parts. Part 1 Chapters 1-11 deals with four major events: creation, the fall of man, the flood, and the creation of the nations through the confusion of the languages at the tower of Bable.

The rest of Genesis, chapters 12 through 50, will center around four major characters: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (Israel) and Joseph.

The book has 50 chapters, 1533 verses, and 38,267 words. Genesis shows that God first came down to create, then to do a work of redemp-tion. To create He had only to speak. To redeem His falled creature, He had to suffer. He made man by His own breath; He saves him by His own blood. When all around was life God spoke of death. Now when all is death, He speaks of life.

a nation threatens Judah, which threat he connects with the Day of the Lord.” (Minor Prophets, p. 36).

Date Creation is thought to have occurred April 26, 4004 BC that date according to a 17th century Catholic Bishop James Ussher who added up the ages of the Bible patriarchs and determined the date. The date is sharply disputed because the three most ancient ver-sions of the book provide differing ages for many of the patriarchs. It is thus impossible to determin the exact date when Creation or the Book of Genesis occured.
