Victoria’s Chatswood Stud is likely to
be the only Australian farm to stand
a Japanese shuttle stallion in 2020
with the news that two-time Group
1 winner Al Ain (Deep Impact) will join their roster
later this year at a fee of $12,100 (inc GST).
The Willis family, who runs Chatswood
Stud, has a long history of identifying stallions
and trends at an early stage, with horses like
Flying Spur (Danehill) and Invincible Spirit
(Green Desert) standing at the Seymour
property early in their careers.
“We were the first Victorian stud to stand
sons of Sunday Silence,” Nic Willis told ANZ
Bloodstock News. “It started back in 1999 with
Bubble Gum Fellow and we also had Genuine
and Tayasu Tsuyoshi. All three of them had
Group 1 winners down here; Genuine produced
Pompeii Ruler and he was probably the best of
them. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Microphone service auctioned for charityThe last available service to Darley stallion
Microphone (Exceed And Excel) in his first
season at stud is on offer on Gavelhouse Plus with
all proceeds to be donated to The CatWalk Trust.
“We’re proud to be supporting the CatWalk
Trust: they are big picture people who work for
big picture results. It’s not just about one person,
it’s about thousands of people. People you and
I know. They want to help get them out of their
wheelchairs and back on their feet,” Darley’s head
of sales Alastair Pulford said. The auction is now
live on Gavelhouse Plus and the nomination is
catalogued as Lot 83. Morning Briefing page 12 >>

“We had been keeping an eye on Japan
for a while and especially sons of Deep Impact to keep that Sunday Silence
line going. We’d asked Satomi Oka who could possibly fit what we were
looking for that could potentially be available, Al Ain was one of those and
so we went pretty hard after him.
“So it’s been in the works since February or March, it’s been a case
of figuring out a deal and seeing whether flights are happening. They are
definitely happening so we are excited to be welcoming him to Chatswood
Stud in 2020.”
Trained by Yasutoshi Ikee and raced by Katsumi Yoshida’s Sunday
Racing outfit, Al Ain won the Japanese 2,000 Guineas - the Satsuki Sho (Gr
1, 2000m) - as a three-year-old in 2017 before adding the Osaka Hai (Gr 1,
2000m) to his CV two years later.
They proved strong form races, too: the Satsuki Sho featured his
generation’s champion two-year-old Satono Ares (Deep Impact) as well
as subsequent Group 1 winners Persian Knight (Harbinger), Rey De
Oro (King Kamehameha), Suave Richard (Heart’s Cry) and Win Bright
(Stay Gold), while the Osaka Hai saw him defeat seven previous Group 1
winners - no mean feat in a jurisdiction that offers so few Group 1 titles.
He was also placed at Group 1 level over a mile, finishing third to
Stelvio (Lord Kanaloa), while he was fourth in the Takarazuka Kinen (Gr
1, 2200m) behind Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner Lys Gracieux (Heart’s
Cry).
“He had a really high cruising speed,” Willis said. “He came from
a really strong crop of three-year-olds, it’s touted as one of the best
they’ve had in recent years, and he had an ability to run amazing times
as well. He was incredibly consistent, it was only his last preparation
where he wasn’t finishing top four or five against some of the best
horses in Japan.
“He really does tick so many boxes, I struggled to find too many faults
with him when I was putting together our analysis on whether we should
chase him.”

Al Ain is by the late Deep Impact
(Sunday Silence), who has won the last seven champion sire titles in
Japan, and out of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) winner
Dubai Majesty (Essence Of Dubai). On his dam’s side are sires such as A P
Indy (Seattle Slew) and His Majesty (Ribot), but crucially for the Australian
market, he is free of Danzig blood.
He has served 120 mares in his first season at stud at Breeders Stallion
Station alongside stallions like Victoire Pisa (Neo Universe), Zenno Rob
Roy (Sunday Silence) and Black Tide (Sunday Silence).
“Al Ain is out of an Essence Of Dubai mare, so that traces back to Pulpit
and A P Indy, those crosses have worked well down here,” Willis said. “It’s
a goldmine for our broodmare population, he will work with so many of
our mares. We checked with some of our biggest clients and all of them
said they would be supporting him so it’s an exciting prospect for us.
“We’ve got a lot of bookings already. Most stallions are already booked
out in Victoria but we’ve got an option here with Al Ain. And as well, to
give some confidence to breeders about his long-term prospects, we’ve
put in clauses for the first five years that, as far as we want him, he’ll be
returning over that period.
“We don’t have other businesses so we’re not in the game to
experiment. We’ve got to go 100 per cent with them and we will be doing
that with Al Ain. We won’t die wondering.”
With stallions like Maurice (Screen Hero), Mikki Isle (Deep Impact)
and Real Steel (Deep Impact) all remaining in Japan this year, Al Ain is
likely to be the only Japanese shuttle stallion in Australia this year. Satono
Aladdin (Deep Impact) is set to shuttle to Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand.
Yoshida said that the bay had always been an eye-catcher, ever since
the day he was foaled late in the 2014 northern hemisphere breeding
season.
"Al Ain is a stunning individual,” Yoshida said. “Though he was foaled
in May, his appearance was very mature from the time he was foaled and
he was one of the best foals on the farm.

“He was sold to a syndication group
when he was a yearling at a price of $1.4 million, but he was immediately
sold out, which tells just how attractive he was.”
Yoshida said that, although his performances at the highest level
came between 1600 metres and 2200 metres, he believes he could have
made a sprinter-miler if Japan’s program allowed for it. He also suggested
that he had precocity and longevity, two factors that should allow him to
translate well to the Australian industry.
“Al Ain’s performance was at
a high level for most of his racing
career and he also had a strong
mentality to perform well under
any circumstances,” he said.
“He was mainly racing at 1600
metres to 2000 metres, but the
amount of speed he had suggests
he could have also shown a high
performance over a shorter
distance.
“I am very confident that his
progeny will fit well with Australian
races and I look forward to seeing
his foals in Australia soon.”
Japanese racing expert Kate Hunter of Marugai Racing believes that
Chatswood Stud have managed to secure a tremendous deal by getting Al
Ain to stand down under.
“I think Al Ain is a great stallion prospect,” Hunter told ANZ Bloodstock
News. “With the successes of Deep Impact’s sons Kizuna and Real Impact
with their first crops on the track and his untimely passing last year, getting
your hands on a stallion prospect like this is an amazing opportunity.
“As a multiple Group 1 winner, capturing both the Japanese 2,000
Guineas and the Osaka Hai over 2000 metres, he should make for a
popular cover for those looking to produce a classic distance horse. He
won from 1600 metres to 2000 metres and was competitive against the
best Japan had to offer up to 2200 metres.
“He has great-looking conformation and he retired sound. He was
both precocious, winning both starts at two, and had the talent to extend
his career at the highest level through his five-year-old campaign on both
firm and soft ground. He has the potential to be the complete package
those looking for a top son of Deep Impact might be looking for.”
Al Ain will be one of three sons of Deep Impact to stand in Australia
this season, joining Coolmore Stud’s Saxon Warrior and Woodside Park
Stud’s Tosen Stardom.
He joins Chatswood mainstay Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel),
who will stand at $11,000 (inc GST), and Inference (So You Think), whose
first yearlings will go through the sales ring in 2021; his fee is set at $6,600.
"Our team all especially liked the Star Turn fillyI bought at Magic Millions and the breaking in
report from Muskoka Farmstated ‘She is a lovely andsmart filly. She jumped outof the barriers well and isa real pleasure to workwith.’ The owners calledher Headliner and so
I’m hoping she is perfectly named."

Glen Eden confirms fees
Victoria’s Glen Eden Stud will stand Group
1 winners Rebel Dane (California Dane)
and Giant’s Steps (Giant's Causeway) in the
upcoming breeding season. Rebel Dane, a
winner of the Rupert Clarke (Gr 1, 1400m) and
Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), will enter his
fourth season at stud this year and he will stand
for a fee of $5,000 (inc GST). Champion Turf
Colt in Chile during the 2012/13 season, Giant’s
Steps will stand for a fee of $4,000 (inc GST).
"Giant's Steps is very gentle and good to handle
on the farm and has been adapting very well
to any change,” said Sonia O’Gorman of Glen
Eden Stud. “He had a good season last year
serving double what he did the year before.”
Winter Bride set for Dane Ripper swansongWell-performed mare Winter Bride (Not A
Single Doubt) will get one last chance to add
to her black-type credentials before retiring to
stud in the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
at Eagle Farm tomorrow. "She was very good in
the Stradbroke. Our horse Tyzone won the race
so naturally he got all the attention," co-trainer
Toby Edmonds said. "But Winter Bride was one
of the better runs in the race. We thought she
deserved one more chance to add to her black
type. She is a long time retired. In a normal year
she would have run in the Group 1 Tatts Tiara as
a swan song but with it not being run this year
the Dane Ripper is the main fillies and mares
race."
Florent a rare Victorian raider for RosesVOBIS Sires Guineas (1600m) winner Florent
(Fiorente) will be one of the few Victorian horses
to compete at the Brisbane winter carnival
when she contests The Roses (Gr 2, 1800m)
tomorrow. Since her VOBIS Guineas win,
Florent has been placed twice in Melbourne
with the latest a third at Flemington on May 16.
"She has been up there three weeks and settled
in. She's had a jump-out and worked well,"
trainer Tony Noonan said. "Not much went
her way at Flemington and getting out to 1800
metres should suit."
Sky Horse thrives in QueenslandThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
Sky Horse (Tavistock) will be looking to bag
her first stakes victory when she contests
the The Roses tomorrow. The lightly raced
daughter of Tavistock (Montjeu) has won
two of her five career starts and finished
fourth last start in the Gunsynd Classic (Gr
3, 1800m). “She is clearly progressive and we
have spaced her runs nicely,” Eustace said.
“I’m looking forward to Saturday. She is a
lovely filly who is really only just getting the
hang of things right now. It was a really good
run the other day from a long way back. She
has drawn nicely on Saturday, which will be
a big help. Her work on Monday was strong
and we are quite confident. We think she will
be hard to beat.”
Niccanova to turn up again in Eagle Farm MileAfter finishing an unlucky
third in last Saturday’s
Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m), the
Steve Tregea-trained
Niccanova (Nicconi) will
back-up in the Eagle Farm
Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) tomorrow. "More than a
few good judges reckon he should have won (in
the Stradbroke) but we all know racing is full of
hard-luck stories," Tregea said. "I would rather
look forward to Saturday. He has a tricky barrier
and he will need some luck. But he likes Eagle
Farm and 1600 metres is ideal so he should get
his chance."
Smith aims to upset Waller dominance in CupChris Waller has five of the eight runners in
tomorrow’s Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) but
Matthew Smith will be hoping to cause an
upset with Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) fourth
Sweet Thomas (Dylan Thomas). He has trialled
and trained on well since a failed run in the
Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) and Smith
is hopeful the heavy track and a smart ride can
ensure tomorrow’s race is a genuine staying
test. "We need to be in a position to make it that
way," Smith said. "I will have to have a look at
the race and how we ride him. He might end up
being a bit further forward, we will just see how
it looks on paper first. But we might get those
sticky, tough, testing conditions and it will be
interesting because his Sydney Cup run was
very good."

Winter Cox Plate test for Django FreemanRobert Hickmott will get a better guide on
Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) ambitions for Django
Freeman (Campanologist) when the German
import is tested at the home of Australasia's
weight-for-age championship for the first
time tomorrow. Django Freeman is set for
his second Australian appearance in the
Inglis July Sales Series Handicap (2040m) at
Moonee Valley and Hickmott said the horse's
fitness levels had improved from his first-up
run. "Obviously the pipe dream is to get him
to a Cox Plate and for him to have a look at
Moonee Valley and see how he handles the
tighter circumference will be a good test
for him," Hickmott said. "It is an off-season
handicap so we won't be getting carried away
but Harbour Views is a very promising horse
and they are using this race as a testing point,
exactly as what we're doing. If we come away
with a win I'd be over the moon."
Harbour Views set for first glimpse at ValleyAfter two third place performances this
campaign, Matthew Williams is confident
Harbour Views (Le Havre) can bounce back
into the winner’s stall in the Inglis July Sale
Series Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley
tomorrow. “I think he’ll really suit The Valley
and after Saturday we’ll get a much better idea
if he’s back on track and what he’ll head to for
the spring, but the Feehan and the Cox Plate
would be the plan,” William told Racing.com.
“It’s the first time he’ll race over a mile but I’m
confident he’ll handle the trip, it’s what he’s
bred for and also we’ve changed up his training
a bit to help him stay. He’s just a bigger, stronger
and more muscular horse than last prep and
most importantly for him he’s really sound. His
action has never been better which is a great
sign, but I’ll definitely be relieved if he comes
out and wins and shows me what I want to see
on Saturday.”
Williams hopes for sentimental win inTravis Harrison CupThe Travis Harrison Cup (1600m) may not
carry the prestige of a Melbourne Cup (Gr
1, 3200m) or Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
but it means a lot to champion jockey
Craig Williams. Williams is the cousin of
Harrison who died in a car accident 24
years ago returning home from a night
out celebrating a fellow rider's birthday
after a successful day at Moonee Valley.
Tomorrow’s meeting at Moonee Valley hosts
the 23rd running of the Travis Harrison Cup
with Williams partnering the Lindsay Park-
trained Biometric (Bated Breath). "It's a
special race for me," Williams said. "For the
racing industry to show respect to Travis as
a person and the family's name it speaks
volumes about the Moonee Valley Racing
Club and how much a tight-knit group
racing is here in Victoria."

Selica targets Rivette Series freshSix weeks after contesting the Australasian
Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) in Adelaide, The Phillip
Stokes-trained Selica (Makfi) is set to compete
over a shorter distance in the Drummond Golf
Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley. "She's had
a bit of a freshen up with the idea of running in
the Rivette Series," Stokes said. "There's the
1400-metre race after this that we're aiming her
for. I think she might find the 1200 metres a bit
short but we're just trying to qualify her for that
(Rivette Series Final). She'll be running on hard
late, it's just a matter of she doesn't give them
too big a start."
Successful pinhook to debut at ValleyTwo-year-old gelding Stardarmesta
(Zoustar), a $200,000 weanling purchase who
was pinkhooked for $1 million at the Inglis
Australian Easter Yearling Sale, will make
his debut in the Sheamus Mills Bloodstock
Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley
tomorrow. Suman Hedge purchased the
Team Hawkes-trained gelding as weanling
and initially planned on selling him at the
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. ‘’I
have been looking for a Zoustar colt since he
went to stud and then this horse came along
and he looked the athlete his father was so,
although $200,000 was seen as quite a lot
for a weanling, I thought he was worth the
gamble,” Hedge told Racing.com. ‘’We had
him nominated for the Gold Coast but we
held him back for Easter and I am glad we
did because he really developed in those few
months from January to April and he looked
great by the time the (Sydney Easter) sale
came around.’’
Maui Girl completes circle for CoyleFormer South Australian Maui Girl (Lope
De Vega) has only been with Jason Coyle for
a short time but horse and trainer share a
common bond. During his stint with Patinack
Farm, Coyle trained her dam, Run For Naara
(More Than Ready), who was Group 1-placed
in the 2010 Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m)
and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). While
Maui Girl is unlikely to reach those heights,
she has demonstrated a number of similar
traits to her dam and shown enough for Coyle
to be optimistic. "Mum had a bit more scope
to her and was a bigger horse but they both
have lovely strides on them and are both
nice movers," Coyle said. "Obviously the
dam has come through in the right spots."
Maui Girl will step out over 1500 metres at
Rosehill tomorrow in a race featuring in-form
filly Bound To Win (Sebring), who has been
touted a potential stakes-class galloper by
trainers Peter and Paul Snowden.
Widdup holds fire with AdelongThe decision to keep Adelong (Medaglia d’Oro)
home in her box last week was a no-brainer
for Brad Widdup who is instead plotting a
slow and steady path towards bigger goals.
Adelong will contest the Catanachs Sprint
(1100m) at Rosehill tomorrow, a week after
she was scratched from the Bob Charley Stakes
(Listed, 1100m). "I was never really going there,
especially once Classique Legend was there,"
Widdup said. "This race was always more
suitable. There's no reason to rush just yet,
there are plenty of black-type races for fillies
and mares over the spring."
ATC to allow members on course at RosehillFor the first time in three months, Australian
Turf Club members will be allowed on course at
a Sydney metropolitan race meeting tomorrow
at Rosehill. ATC chief executive Jamie Barkley
said welcoming back members was a first
step towards the return of crowds. "While it
is not quite the same experience members
may be used to as we strictly adhere to the
NSW government public health order, it will
give them a race day experience that can't be
matched at home or on TV," Barkley said.
VRC announces membership planThe VRC have penned a letter to their
members announcing memberships will
remain the same for next season. In its
letter the VRC said that its members are “the
heartbeat of our great club and, while we are
a diverse group of people, we are united in
our love of great racing and Flemington”. “We
grow evermore optimistic and are planning
for a gradual return to racing with crowds
very soon - our members are front and centre
of those plans,” the letter read. The club also
said they will further address memberships
should the 2020 Melbourne Cup Carnival not
go ahead.

Roccabascerana sold to Hong KongThe Will Clarken-trained Roccabascerana
(Fighting Sun) has been sold to Hong Kong to
join the stables of Frankie Lor. The three-year-
old has won four of his eight starts, including
a last-start success down the Flemington
straight on May 23. “It was a tough call as he
is basically a family horse named after the
owner’s hometown back in Italy,” Clarken told
Racing.com. “He is still untapped I believe as a
racehorse, but in the current economic climate
with a great deal of sadness I must say the offer
was too good for them to refuse.”
Mystic Journey readies for spring returnTravel restrictions could force trainer Adam
Trinder to watch on from Tasmania when
his Group 1 winner Mystic Journey (Needs
Further) next campaigns on the mainland.
Mystic Journey is scheduled to commence her
spring campaign in the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr
3, 1200m) at Caulfield late next month. If Mystic
Journey travels without Trinder, the trainer is
sure the Tony McEvoy stable, where the mare
has stayed previously, will provide the best care
for his stable star. "She always goes to Tony's
stable and the team there has a really good
understanding of how I do things with her, a
good understanding of our systems," Trinder
told RSN. "I trust she would lose nothing if I
did have to send her and let them care for her,
but from a selfish perspective it is not an ideal
scenario as I'm very hands on and I like to do
things myself. But in trying times, sometimes
you have to diversify."
Brown still hopes to return to ridingCorey Brown announced on Wednesday that
his recovery from a fall he suffered in last year’s
Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) had faced a
setback that could delay his return until next
year. While doctors are advising him not to
return to riding, he is adamant he will get back
in the saddle. “They don’t want me to ride. It’s
been a constant message (from the doctors),”
Brown told Racing.com “The bloke who
operated on me in Brisbane, the spine specialist
here had to make contact with him and get
scans and that sort of stuff. When he queried

so to speak. I’m not going to throw my hands
up now.”
Eaton to try her luck in South AustraliaAs she heads into the final year of her
apprenticeship, Jessica Eaton is set to try her
luck in Adelaide, joining the stables of Michael
Hickmott. “Opportunities are always difficult in
the city and the slight restriction on field sizes
of late has made it tougher again,” Eaton told
Racing.com. “Also, my bosses John and Chris
Meagher, who have been terrific to work for
don’t have massive numbers. I just felt coming
out of my time next March this move may be
a chance to hone my skills and craft a little
further. Michael has been at me for some time
to come across and I have had luck in Adelaide
on previous hit-run visits.”

com. “It’s quite amazing when I look at her,
we won two open group 1 races (Manikato
and William Reid) with her and she’s only a
three-year-old filly. She’s going to be a lot
more seasoned coming into the spring and
she’s one of the top sprinters we have in
Australia on her day.”
Simply Sacred ‘wins’, then disqualifiedAfter winning the fifth race at Grafton yesterday,
Simply Sacred (Blackfriars) was disqualified
when his rider Ben Looker weighed in in-
excess of his allocated weight. Simply Sacred,
the $5 second favourite, passed the post more
than one length clear of Macchina Volante
(Hinchinbrook), who was awarded the race in
light of the disqualification.
McMahon disqualifiedfor sample switchFormer top jockey Ric McMahon has been
disqualified after stewards used DNA to
prove he had tampered with a urine sample.
McMahon was effectively disqualified for 15
months but after time he had spent stood down
had been considered, he will be able to reapply
for his licence on December 25. A leading jockey
in Brisbane for a decade, McMahon relocated
to Mt Isa in northwest Queensland two years
ago. Stewards opened an inquiry regarding
urine samples purported to have been taken
from McMahon at Mount Isa on August 8 and
Townsville on September 3. McMahon was
found guilty of a charge that he substituted a
sample of urine which he purported was taken
from him.

National Weanling Sale launches on Gavelhouse PlusNew Zealand Bloodstock’s first-ever National
Weanling Sale is live, with the quality 82-lot
catalogue available to view on Gavelhouse Plus.
Bidding on the weanling only sale launched
yesterday and will run for an 11-day period,
with the first lot closing on Sunday June 21 at
3pm (NZT). The line-up includes progeny by
champion and leading sires such as Savabeel
(Zabeel), Darci Brahma (Danehill), Ocean Park
(Thorn Park) and Tavistock (Montjeu), and for
the first time buyers will get the opportunity
to secure lots by freshman sires Almanzor
(Wootton Bassett) and Time Test (Dubawi).
Weanlings offered in the Sale are also eligible to
enter in the Karaka Million Series.
Not An Option to return to PikeNew Zealand colt Not An Option (Not A Single
Doubt) will return to his homeland later this
month after finishing tailed off in a roughhouse
affair in last Saturday’s J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) at Eagle Farm. The Group 2 winner was
left in the care of Sydney trainers Michael and
Richard Freedman due to Covid-19 restrictions
but did not get the rub of the green last
weekend. “Not An Option is booked to come
back on the 29th of this month,” Pike said. “He
is at the spelling farm in Queensland at present.
He basically got put through the running rail at
about the 1100-metre mark and first time with
blinkers he panicked a bit. We will get him back,
his form in Sydney was solid, have a chat to
everyone and he will be much better as a three-
year-old.”
Bambry chases Newcomer to Training awardChrissy Bambry has the added incentive to send
out more winners once racing resumes as her
seven wins for the season puts her in contention
for the gavelhouse.com Newcomer to Training
Award, awarded annually to the trainer with the
most individual winners, training in their own
right and holding a licence for less than five
seasons. “It might not be a big award but we will
try to give it a little bit of a nudge,” Bambry said.
“I’ve got some nice horses here that I might be
able to get a win with before the season is out,
but I know that there are a few other trainers in
contention, and we are only separated by a win
or two. It’s done on individual winners, which is
a challenge, as I don’t have a huge team.”
Media Sensation to miss early spring actionGroup 1 winner Media Sensation (I Am
Invincible) is likely to bypass the early spring
but could be seen in a race like the Auckland
Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m)
in November. “We felt as a four-year-old she
wasn’t at her best but we’re expecting her to
be better as a five-year-old,” co-trainer Peter
Williams said. “We won’t push her for Hawke’s
Bay but we will probably have a look at the
mares race at Counties.”

Almond Eye tops Takarazuka Kinen votingAlmond Eye (Lord Kanaloa) has received the
most votes for the fan-compiled Takarazuka
Kinen (Gr 1, 2200m), but the mare will not
run and is instead having a break after a shock
defeat in the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) last
weekend. Almond Eye received almost 112,000
of the 1.4 million votes and topped the poll
ahead of Group 1 winners Lucky Lilac (Orfevre)
and Saturnalia (Lord Kanaloa), both of whom
are likely to line up in the Hanshin feature on
June 28. The Takarazuka Kinen was won last
year by the Yoshito Yahagi-trained Lys Gracieux
(Heart’s Cry) at her last start before taking the
Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Eligible employers will be able to receive
and pay the JobKeeper payments to various
employee categories, including, but not limited
to:
• Employees who were employed by you as employees as at March 1, 2020;
• Employees currently employed by you (including those stood down or re-hired);
• Employees who are full-time, part-time, or long-term casuals (to get the payment for
a casual employee, they must have been employed by you on a regular basis for longer
than 12 months as at March 1, 2020); and• Employees who are not in receipt of a
JobKeeper Payment from another employer.
• Special eligibility for horse business structures with no employeesPresuming the above eligibility conditions for employers and
employees are satisfied, note below how a “nominated” employee for the
following common business structures are eligible to receive JobKeeper.
• Sole traders
The proprietor will be eligible if they do not receive JobKeeper from
another source.Another reminder: for verification purposes, businesses without
employees, such as a sole trader:• will need to provide an ABN for their business;
• nominate an individual to receive the payment;
• provide that individual’s Tax File Number; and
• provide a declaration as to the recent business activity of that business.
Sole traders are easily the most common horse structures and, as
such, it is worth sharing that if you are also employed on a wage and
would like to receive JobKeeper as a sole trader, rather than through your
employer, you can nominate yourself as the “eligible business participant”
Carrazzo Consulting Pty Ltd | Chartered Accountants - www.carrazzo.com.au
under the business participation rules and give appropriate notice to the
ATO. In this scenario, your employer cannot nominate you for JobKeeper
payments.
• PartnershipsA single partner in a partnership can be nominated. This single
partner must not be receiving JobKeeper from another source.• Trusts
A single individual beneficiary of a trust can be nominated to receive
JobKeeper payments. This individual beneficiary must not be receiving
JobKeeper from another source. The beneficiaries of a trust are outlined and defined within its trust deed.
• CompaniesA single director or shareholder of a company can be nominated.
These businesses will also receive JobKeeper payments for their other
eligible employees. This single director must not be receiving JobKeeper from another
source.
These initiatives are a step forward, but
it is noted by accounting bodies, such as CPA
Australia, that they have limitations in ensuring
equitable access to JobKeeper within trust,
partnership, and company structures. They will
recommend to government that the ‘business
participant’ test be extended to all actively
engaged persons in trusts, partnerships and
companies. For more details on JobKeeper, please refer
to our recent release titled “JobKeeper subsidy
for businesses and employees” on the Carrazzo
blog at www.carrazzo.com.au.

Of all the recent government Covid-19 initiatives recently announced, it is generally thought that the JobKeeper payment for employers is only available to profitable horse businesses that have established employees. If you thought this was the case, read on, upon review of the recently announced JobKeeper legislation, I have some pleasant surprises for you.Below, I will work through the four common business structures and explain how it is possible for business owners that operate as sole traders or through trusts, partnerships and companies, to be eligible for JobKeeper even if their businesses are currently in losses and/or they aren’t being paid wages.

JobKeeper – positive updatecould benefit your horse business
JobKeeper payment – quick overviewA JobKeeper payment is a minimum payment ($1,500 per fortnight) the Government will pay to eligible businesses (defined below) to ensure they are able to keep their eligible employees (defined below) employed by them during this Covid-19 period. The first payment will be received by employers from the ATO in the
first week of May, 2020 and will be backdated to be payable from the scheme commencement of March 30, 2020. Payments under JobKeeper can be received up to September 27, 2020.• Eligible employers
All businesses who meet the turnover tests below can now register their interest with the ATO to receive the JobKeeper payment for their employees. Update to “Turnover tests” for employers All businesses (including sole traders) can now register their interest to
receive the JobKeeper payments for their employees (or themselves if sole traders) if they meet the various turnover tests. The most applicable test to the horse industry is that their turnover has been reduced by more than 30 per cent relative to a comparable period a year ago (of at least a month).
Since our original release on JobKeeper a few weeks ago, the ATO has given more details as to how to apply the “turnover test”. This is a crucial consideration for employers and is noted below.
How to calculate a fall in turnover for the first fortnight starting 30 March 2020To work out your fall in turnover, you can compare either:• GST turnover for March, 2020 with GST turnover for March, 2019• projected GST turnover for April, 2020 with GST turnover for April, 2019• projected GST turnover for the quarter starting April 2020 with GST
turnover for the quarter starting April, 2019How you choose to project your fall in turnover is not dependent on whether you report a quarterly or monthly BAS, though you can do that if it is easier.
If you work out that you qualify for the JobKeeper payments for the first fortnight because your turnover has declined by the relevant amount, you remain eligible and do not need to keep testing turnover in following months. However, you will have ongoing monthly reporting requirements. More information will be provided soon. The ATO also has the discretion to set out alternative tests that can
establish your eligibility when turnover periods are not appropriately comparable (for example, if your business has been in operation less than a year). We will provide more information soon about alternative tests.

“The interest has been very good,
and probably better than we thought, and by design we held back on
announcing fees just because we needed to see where the market sat, see
what the appetite was and just get a feel for what the market is saying,” Cox
told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“We think we have got a relative idea on where it all sits, but those
three in particular have demanded a lot of interest at this early stage.”
While conscious of the prevailing market outlook caused by the global
pandemic, Cox said the deeds of Exceed And Excel demanded that the
rising 20-year-old’s service fee was put up from $88,000 in 2019 given his
recent achievements.
Buyers have also recognised Exceed And Excel’s consistent
performance as an elite sire, with a colt making $1.7 million at the Easter
sale last year and another son at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale fetching $1.8 million, the second highest-priced yearling
sold at auction in Australasia this year.
“He has got three Group 1-winning colts at the moment and two
recently retired, Microphone and Exceedance and for Bivouac, it is our
intention to race him on next season,” he said.
“Having said that, those horses are winning the proper races - the
right races - and it shows with what the horse is doing in the sale ring as
well. Exceed is a horse who can change your postcode, whether you are
racing one or if you have got one in the sale ring.
“When a horse has that sort of effect generally you expect that to be
reflected in his price and that is where we’ve moved him to.”
Darley has maintained the 2019 service fees of Victorian-based
stallions Street Boss (Street Cry) ($27,500) and Brazen Beau (I Am
Invincible) ($49,500), the leading second season sire by stakes winners
with five, in front of money-earning leader Rubick (Encosta De Lago)
(two) and Deep Field (Northern Meteor) (three).
The remainder of Darley’s stallion roster, including champion Lonhro
(Octagonal) ($66,000), Astern (Medagalia d’Oro) ($22,000), Epaulette
(Commands) ($22,000) and Harry Angel (Dark Angel) ($16,500), have all
had their service fees reduced.

“I think he’s
going to come as a little bit of a shock and a
surprise to the market that he is standing under
the Newgate banner, but he’s a horse we just felt
deserved his chance,” Slade told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday.
“Obviously, he raced in the Godolphin
colours and I think everyone’s first memory of the
horse is that he is that X-factor horse that was the
early favourite for the Golden Slipper. Everyone
was so excited after his debut to see where he’d
go and where he’d get to, but unfortunately, due
to injury, he was never able to fulfill the potential
that he had shown on debut.”
That debut was an electric five and a quarter
length victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) at
Rosehill in November, 2018. It was a win that saw
Tassort assume early favouritism for that season’s Golden Slipper Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m), with form analysts rating his performance through the
roof: The Rating Bureau’s Daniel O’Sullivan declared it a “Group 1 class”
performance that was “stamped
by a sharp turn of foot, terrific late
strength and fast overall time”,
placing him in rarefied company.
Unfortunately, the colt only
raced once more, when he was
sent out as an odds-on favourite
in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2,
1100m) at Rosehill. Slow from the
stalls, he settled near the rear in an
evenly-run race, making ground
late into second but unable to reel
in Time To Reign (Time For War).
“We had key indicators
through this horse’s career that
told us he was elite and just
never had the chance to show it,”
Slade said. “We are big on time ratings and data. Daniel O’Sullivan from
The Ratings Bureau gave this guy a 103 on debut when he won. He was
impressive to the eye that day but when the time data came back, it said,
listen, this is as impressive a two-year-old debut that we’ve seen since the
likes of Estijaab and Extreme Choice. To be honest, at the time, we thought
we had a colt to be really concerned about on the racetrack, wearing our
Newgate cap!
“Obviously we never got to see that ability but on the back of that
performance, that debut, James McDonald came out and said he was the
real deal and James Cummings was very much of the same opinion, he
had a very high opinion of the horse. Everyone that had something to do
with him plus the time data suggested he had the ability to be that real
elite performer.
Slade continued: “At the end of the day, for all of us, our key criteria
for any young stallion standing at Newgate is that elite race performance.
Horses don’t have to win their Group 1s, but if they showed elite
performance, they generally are your best chance of becoming an
important stallion.
“I just feel you only have to look at the general sires list to see that. They are
either proper, proper Group 1 horses, or they were horses who had that ability but
didn’t get to showcase their true potential.

Joao Moreira got the fillip he’d been
looking for at Happy Valley on
Wednesday night, teaming up with
Caspar ‘King of the Valley’ Fownes to nail
a much-needed double.
The Brazilian entered the arena four wins
adrift of championship leader Zac Purton and
that widened to five when the reigning champ
took the opener. But with the Australian unable
to add to that early score, Moreira hit back with
two wins that narrowed the gap to three, with
the tally running 129-126 in Purton’s favour.
Moreira kicked off aboard Sky Darci (Darci
Brahma) in section one of the Class 4 Renfrew
Handicap (1200m) and backed up one race
later with Green Luck (Street Cry) in the Class
3 Lancashire Handicap (1650m). Moreira and
Fownes have seven wins from 32 pairings this
term, a strike rate of 22 per cent.
“It was a great ride on Green Luck,” Fownes
said. “We studied the race and we knew if he
jumped well he could go forward and Joao’s
nailed it a treat, he’s crossed from gate seven
and been on the leader’s back all of a sudden,
which has made things a lot easier for him.”
Green Luck shouldered a top-weight of 133
pounds, having dipped into Class 3 for the first
time since May last year, as Moreira took his
record on the five-year-old to two wins from
three rides.
“The drop in class made a huge difference,
he’s been very good in this class before, he’s
won multiple times and he didn’t disappoint
again. He’s a nice horse and I’ve been quite
lucky with him because I haven’t ridden him
often but I’ve won a couple on him, so I’m
pleased,” Moreira said.
Green Luck never looked like troubling his
own 1650-metre course record but worked hard
along the inside rail to outpoint Alpha Hedge
(Sir Prancealot) by three-quarters of a length.
“He’s a funny horse – on his day he’s pretty
smart but he mixes his form a bit,” Fownes said.
“He can throw in a few average races and then
when he wants to get his mind on the job he’s
competitive; it’s all just in his head and I saw
that the day he arrived. But for all that, he’s
done well, he’s won four races and he still holds
the course record.”
Fownes and Moreira were on the ball with
Sky Darci’s tactics too. As it happened, the
2.2 favourite was well ahead of his rivals and
quickened to a two-length success.
“I said to Joao, ‘don’t hassle him early, just
let him find his feet, I think he’s the best horse
in the race’. It didn’t look a strong race on paper
and hopefully now the handicapper doesn’t
destroy him. These young horses, they need to
slowly earn their points the right way,” Fownes
said.
Moreira was taken with the three-year-old,
who earned his second win at just his fourth
outing.
“He’s a nice young horse with a bright future
– it’s hard to say where he’ll get to but there’s no
doubt he’s better than this class,” Moreira said.
Purton gained his victory on the Paul
O’Sullivan-trained Harrier Jet (Dane Shadow)
in section three of the Class 4 Renfrew Handicap
(1200m).
While Moreira is locked in an unyielding
battle with Purton, Fownes has a side contest
going on with trainers’ premiership leader Ricky
Yiu. Fownes prides himself on being the leading
trainer at the Valley but Yiu moved to within one
win of his current season’s bounty when Eternal
Harvest (Smart Missile) took race four.
“Good luck to him!” Fownes said after Sky
Darci’s success, with a jocular look that said
‘not on my watch’. Then came Green Luck and a
three-win cushion – Fownes now has 28 wins at
the city track to Yiu’s 25.

Yiu’s steady Harvest Eternal Harvest’s victory in the Class 3
Durham Handicap (1000m) kept Yiu ticking
along at the top of the standings and maintained
his five-win lead over next-best Francis Lui,
who was also on the mark.
“I’m still keeping the faith but this win doesn’t
give me any more confidence,” Yiu said. “There
are still nine meetings to go, so there’s time for
someone to catch me – anything can happen.”
Eternal Harvest’s second win at his fifth start
came seven and a half weeks after his last run.
“He’s been to Conghua and that’s helped
him; like a lot of horses that go there, he’s more
settled now,” Yiu said.
“Vincent (Ho) held the horse when the
pace was fast in the early part of the race. He led
all the way when he won before but this time he
enjoyed chasing them and he’s improved since
the last time he ran.”
Eternal Harvest’s previous success was
at Sha Tin over 200 metres farther but Ho
believes the minimum dash suits the three-
year-old.
“It was a pretty good win,” Ho said. “His last
run was disappointing, he felt weak, but today
he was a totally different horse. I think Ricky
freshening him up helped the horse and 1000
metres suited him – he can do it at 1200 but the
1000 metres suits him, the pace is on and he’s
got some early pace.”
The rider sealed a brace when he launched
the Lui-trained Massive Pocket (Stratum) fast
and late down the middle of the track in the
finale, the Class 2 Alnwick Handicap (1200m).
The 49/1 shot ran down the Moreira-ridden
Hong Kong Win (Mossman).
Tony Cruz kept Yiu and Lui within range
thanks to California Rad (Fastnet Rock) winning
the Class 3 Hereford Handicap (1200m) under
Karis Teetan. Cruz has 53 wins and sits third in
the trainers’ table, six behind Yiu.
Vagner Borges continued his good form
to bag a 13th success this term, nine of which
have been achieved since the start of May.
The Brazilian made all on the Richard Gibson-
trained Invaluable (Ocean Park) in the Class 4
Rhondda Handicap (1800m).
Antoine Hamelin, another rider enjoying a
purple patch, took section two of the Renfrew
Handicap on the Chris So-trained Master
Albert (Magic Albert).
Curling Luxury (O’Reilly) was third at Sha
Tin on Sunday but thrived on the quick back-
up to win the Class 5 Selkirk Handicap (1650m)
under Dylan Mo. The seven-year-old’s seventh
career win gave trainer Me Tsui his 31st this
term but only his second since the end of April.
Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on
Sunday.

The Falcone family colours were
famously sported by brothers and
top three-year-olds Divine Prophet
(Choisir) and Proisir (Choisir) in
the last decade.
Proisir’s son Scenic Warrior has a long way
to go to join the pair but, on the strength of his
maiden win at Warwick Farm on Monday, he
is likely to be given his chance to head down
a Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) path in the
spring.
The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-
trained Scenic Warrior is already in the spelling
paddock following his determined victory on
Monday at what was his second start following
a fast-finishing fifth to Concealed (Deep Field)
at Canterbury on debut.
Sitting much closer to the speed on
Monday, he didn’t look entirely comfortable
on the wet track but handled it better than
his rivals. He edged clear for a three-quarter
length success over early leader Gunnamatta
(Headwater) with Prompt Prodigy (More Than
Ready) a head away in third.
“He's a really nice horse going forward,"
Michael Hawkes told Sky Thoroughbred
Central. "He was probably a little bit stiff at
Canterbury. He drew a bad barrier and had to
go too far back but he really hit the line solidly.
"Today, Warwick Farm, he jumped out and
travelled pretty well and he got away with a win.
Actually, we would have been disappointed
had he got beaten, but he stuck into the fight.
He'll more than likely head to the paddock and
he'll come back a really nice horse later on in
the spring."
Hawkes added: “These colours have been
pretty successful with us with the Falcone
family. Divine Prophet was their last good
horse that we had and there have been a few
in between. Being by Proisir, it's probably a bit
sentimental to the Falcone family.”
Scenic Warrior is the second named foal out
of Pemba Nepali (Domesday); the first, Napster
(Proisir), won twice over the Canterbury 1250
metres earlier this year and has now joined the
Hong Kong stable of John Size.
Further back, Scenic Warrior descends
from one of the most prominent Woodlands
families. Second dam Nepal (Quest For Fame)
is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Crawl (Dr
Grace), while the family also features another
Group 1 winner in Trapeze Artist (Snitzel).
Pemba Nepali, a Sale maiden winner, was
offered for sale by Goodwood Farm at the 2015
Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale. She was
bought by Kitchwin Hills for $29,000.
Having missed the 2017 breeding season
after Scenic Warrior was foaled in late
November, she has again visited Proisir the last
two years; she produced a filly in August last
year, while she is back in foal to him once more.
Proisir will stand at Rich Hill Stud in New
Zealand this season for NZ$9,000 (plus GST).

After more than 25 years based in
the Hunter Valley as a dedicated
servant to the thoroughbred,
it could be easy to take that
spectacular horse country for granted.
Not so for Godolphin broodmare supervisor
Chris Cooper, who admits that the Woodlands
farm on which he has worked for all bar one of
those years is now simply a part of who he is.
“Woodlands to me is not simply a place of
employment as my wife and I have chosen it to be
our home for the last 26 years and it is also where
we have raised our two children Danielle and
Rachel,” Cooper told ANZ Bloodstock News. “It is
fair to say that Woodlands is in our souls.
“The entire atmosphere of the place is
incredible. You see it in the reaction of people
who come and visit, they are amazed. It is much
more than a place to work.”
Cooper has been nominated by Woodlands
assistant manager Simon Johnson for the
prestigious Dedication to Breeding Award,
one of seven categories that will be recognised
through the 2020 Stud and Stable Staff Awards,
supported by Godolphin. Johnson himself is a
nominee for the Leadership Award.
“It’s normal to see Chris at work at first light
every day and you’ll find him driving through
the paddocks each evening just before dark
checking on his mares,” Johnson said. “He
treats the place as he would if it were his own
and the mares are like his own family.

“Chris’s love for the mares and his attention
to detail has saved many lives. Everything he does
is about caring for them and it is reflected in our
broodmare band. He is absolutely dedicated.”
The Dedication to Breeding Award is
sponsored by Magic Millions and has been won
in the past by Widden Stud’s David Merrick,
Coolmore’s Patrick Sheehan, Vikki Cannon from
Gooree Park, Jenny Watson at Armidale Stud and
Bernadette Hamill, representing Yarradale Stud.
Cooper has long been dedicated to horses,
with his first introduction coming as a youngster
courtesy of the late Peter Flynn.
“My first exposure to horses was when I was
growing up,” he said. “I was lucky enough to
spend time at the old Segenhoe Stud, which is
now known as Vinery, with Peter Flynn. Peter
instilled a love of horses in me and taught me
the value of a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.
“In 1994 I secured a position at Woodlands
working with the yearlings and so, as
newlyweds, my wife Kristine and I moved to the
Hunter Valley.”
Having joined Woodlands in 1994, Cooper
became involved with the Ingham racing empire
at a time when the poultry kings were about to
experience their greatest run of success.
“I fondly remember the days of Octagonal
racing and then retiring to stud. When he
arrived, it was like living with a rock star,” he
recalled. “Another stallion I have been fortunate
enough to have a lot to do with is Lonhro. I
remember him being born and I’m privileged to
have helped to raise him to become a racehorse
just as good as his father.”
Cooper has held a number of positions
across the Woodlands farm and has become
knowledgeable across so many of their
operations.
“After working with the yearlings
for two years, I rode a stock pony for a
further two years back when all of our
stock work was done with horses,” he
said. “I thoroughly enjoyed getting paid
to ride as I was endurance riding and I
was able to mix business with pleasure.
“In future years I worked at the
foaling unit and serving barn before
being promoted to a supervisor’s role
and I became involved with all areas
of reproduction. While working for the
Ingham family, I was lucky enough to
work with some wonderful stallions
like Dr Grace, Night Shift, Brief Truce
and of course Octagonal.”
Cooper’s one year away from Woodlands
came in 2004, when he joined Widden Stud as
their assistant manager.
“The opportunity arose to expand my
experience so I accepted a position at Widden
Stud as their assistant stud manager,” he said.
“My time at Widden was a great experience and
I was glad to be part of a property that has such
a rich history in the thoroughbred industry.
Then, in January, 2005 I returned to Woodlands
again in a supervisory role.”
In 2008, the Inghams sold the majority of
their racing and breeding assets, including
Woodlands, to Godolphin. While that could
have proved a stumbling block, as any transition
can, Cooper is grateful for the opportunities
he’s been afforded in the years since.
“For instance I was twice chosen by
Godolphin to be the Australian instructor
to travel to Beijing in China to help induct
some Chinese University graduates into a
course called the DITI (Darley International
Thoroughbred Internship) program. I found
this to be a very rewarding experience
and it ignited a passion for training. I
believe that it is our obligation to share
our knowledge and experience with the
younger generation of horse men and
women entering our industry.”
In his current role as broodmare
supervisor at Woodlands, Cooper deals
with some of the best-bred and best-
performing mares on a daily basis.
“At the moment, some of my
favourite mares that I look after are
Ouachita, the mother of the Golden Slipper
winner Kiamichi, and also Mnemosyne, who
is the mother of one of our exciting young
stallions Impending,” he said. “Both of these
mares have had ongoing feet issues so I have
worked very closely with them over many years
to help keep them sound.
“My favourite older retired mare would
have to be Excited Angel, who won 12 races
and has produced nine winners. Excited Angel
is now 32 years young and looks a picture of
health.
“Just recently I have received some very well-
known retired race fillies into my care, which
include Alizee, Kiamichi and Pohutukawa. For me
to say that I am now responsible for the care of these
fillies is something that I’m very proud about.”
The Dedication to Breeding Award winner
receives, from Magic Millions, a trophy and
$10,000, with $3,000 to their employer to share
amongst staff.
“For me, being nominated for such an
award has been very humbling particularly
because I have been nominated by my peers,”
he said. “When you look at the horse people
that have been finalists for the Dedication To
Breeding category in the past, it is hard for me
to believe that my name is now associated with
these great men and women and I thank Simon
Johnson for nominating me.
“To win this award would be an honour,
however I am very humbled to make it this far. I
would like to wish all the finalists the best of luck.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be
presented during a virtual ceremony on June 17.
The entire atmosphere of the place is incredible. You
see it in the reaction of people who come and visit, they are amazed. It is much more than a place to work- Chris Cooper

VERDICT An interesting race. Mythical sets the standard on ratings andthere might be more to come but he does not quite convince.
Preference is for the unbeaten CROSSFIREHURRICANE who stepped up to Listedclass when comfortably holding reopposing stable companion Choice Of Mine atDundalk in February. He can confirm those placings with maidens Chiracua andGold Maze providing plenty of interest too. [Justin O’Hanlon]

VERDICT Despite there being no overseas runners for at least half acentury, the opening Classic of the Irish Flat season remains a
fascinating affair. The fact that Seamie Heffernan partners LOPE Y FERNANDEZ,by the same sire as last year’s winner, must be considered a positive and astrongly-run mile on quick ground could be right up his street. He gets the nod overSiskin, who is undoubtedly talented but needs to prove his stamina, and the classyArmory, one that may prefer further in time. [Mark Boylan]
