A NEW 18+ MENU A SUMMARY OF PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING YOU CAN DO

AFTER COMPLETING A-LEVELS, BTEC L3, IB OR EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS

Objectives: a) to demonstrate the range of options

b) to identify some implications for guidance c) to consider how you might customise the info for your own use

Please don’t be put off by the number of slides

This will be like “Around the World in 25 Minutes” - so hold on to your hats! Key points are highlighted in red

THE NEW LANDSCAPE

(A WORK IN PROGRESS)

• Previously 3 main things most students did at 18: UNI JOB GAP YEAR

• Globalisation + vocational agenda + rise in tuition fees

have now created a more complex landscape

• I’ve identified 27 options!

• Not clearly demarcated - overlap/blend/‘seamless’

• But here’s my attempt to ‘demarcate’ them!

Section 1:

FULL-TIME HIGHER EDUCATION

IN UK

Key advantage:

• despite hundreds of course options , hundreds of subject combinations and 300+ providers….

• ….at least the options are finite and can mostly be found in one place – UCAS!

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

Will train you towards a specific career and is quite likely to lead to professional qualifications in that field

Examples: Medicine, Vet, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, OT, Nursing, Midwifery, Optometry, Speech Therapy, Radiography, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Audiology, Dietetics, Podiatry, Primary Teaching, Construction, Quantity Surveying, Environmental Health,

Engineering (???), Architecture (???)

The question is, where does “vocational” become….

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

Still ‘vocational’, but:

a) don’t necessarily need that degree for that career, OR

b) graduates won’t necessarily enter that profession, OR

c) some variants may be more ‘vocational’ than others

Examples: Law, Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, Journalism, Accountancy, Computer Science, Business, Marketing, PR, Performing Arts, Design, Hospitality, Tourism, Sport, Nutrition, Agriculture, Food Science, Forensic Science, Media Technology …..

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

…a new slant on ‘semi-vocational’ as illustrated by: Jack & his amazing technicolor dream course!

• Jack Evans, 2nd yr Media Technology undergraduate at Glamorgan

• Also has p/t jobs at Iceland and as a photographer’s assistant

• Has also set up a media business with fellow-students

• And is going to USA for 4 months in May as a Camp Counsellor

• “My uni experience has got lots of different colours….

• ….I’m coping financially, it’s not a problem….

• ….and you meet so many amazing people that, whenever I need someone in my career, I’ll always have people to go to”

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

You probably won’t go directly into a career in it

You’re probably motivated by a passion for the subject

Examples: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Economics, Geography, Philosophy, Religion, Sociology, Classics, Modern Languages, Drama, Art, Art History

But again the boundaries are blurred

and 4 big issues about the intrinsic value of a degree in an ‘academic’ subject are often overlooked……

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

…..as illustrated by:

Jessica: “It’s about the journey, isn’t it?

Microsoft: “For us it’s less about WHAT you’ve studied and more about why you want to work for us and what you can bring”

Graduate employers still often seeking good degree in any discipline + employability skills + work/voluntary experience

But do beware the possible cost of postgrad study

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

You could combine 2 or more ‘academic’ subjects Example: History and Politics Or 2 or more subjects that include semi-vocational or vocational

combinations, or a mixture Example: Physics and Musical Performance Or there are multidisciplinary courses Example: Natural Sciences And you can often vary the balance of major/minor options Examples: Maths and Computer Science or Chemistry with Management

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

For students who don’t know what they want to do, I sometimes use:

“Alan’s Degree Course Menu” (399 ideas)

“You Can’t All Be Doctors!” (56 alternatives to Medicine)

FULL-TIME UNI DEGREE IN UK

2-year LLB Law degrees (various pros & cons of this) at: • BPP*, Buckingham* Northampton, Staffordshire • University of Law (Birmingham/Bristol/Chester/Guildford/London/Manchester/York)

Examples of other 2-year degrees: SAE Institute* (London, Oxford, Liverpool, Glasgow – 2 yr Creative Media degrees) Buckingham* (various), Greenwich (Business Management), Farnborough CT (Psychology & Criminology), Marjon (Adventure Ed, Leadership, Live Music, PE, Primary Ed) Northampton (Management, Marketing, Sport), Plymouth (Computing/IT), Staffordshire (Accountancy & Finance)

Foundation degrees and HNDs • Another shorter route, but can also top them up to a degree

(* = private sector providers)

FULL-TIME DEGREE IN UK

Cost differentials may now be less prohibitive, or even cheaper - Examples:

New College for the Humanities, London • fees £18Kpa for 3-year degree; SLC tuition fee loan not available, although…. • ….20%+ will get full or up to £7,500pa funding through scholarships or exhibitions

Section 2:

HIGHER EDUCATION

ABROAD

There’s a global revolution going on - a new era of transnational university education

Young people worldwide are embracing the global economy and equipping

themselves to be part of it

It’s my view that we should be encouraging UK students to get out there and join them….in one way or another….

OVERSEAS UNIVERSITIES

Excellent support now available, especially through: • astarfuture.co.uk • degreesahead.co.uk • eunicas.co.uk • thestudentworld.com’ • ‘Venture’ from careerseurope.co.uk • learnabroad.ie • studyabroad.com • fulbright.co.uk (USA) • studyoptions.com (Australia & NZ)

A Star Future featured more than 60 courses in their ‘Clearing list’ in August 2012 World uni rankings listed at: • timeshighereducation.co.uk • topuniversities.com (QS rankings)

POSSIBLE ADVANTAGES COMPARED WITH UK

• Same tuition fees as native students at public unis, so cheaper than UK

• Private unis more expensive but still cheaper than UK

• Growing number of courses taught in English, especially Netherlands

• Later application window in most countries

POSSIBLE DISADVANTAGES COMPARED WITH UK

• More overcrowded/underfunded/less pastoral support???

• You won’t be entitled to UK tuition fee loans, student loans or grants

• So you will have to pay tuition fees up front (but you may then be able to take out a loan from the country you study in e.g. Netherlands)

• You may not have access to loans/grants but to check this, go to ‘financial help by country’ at europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/education

• Halls of Residence are not the norm like they are in UK

• Future implications of Euro crisis and possible Sterling crisis??

THE NETHERLANDS

ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES • If you get p/t time work for 8 hours+ per week, you can get a grant* of about

£250 per month after 3 months (but may mean dishwashing etc) • You can apply for a tuition fee loan once you get there (1.5% interest) • Progressive approach to teaching – multinational groupwork, debating,

lobbying, PBL, global placements, very international student body • Dutch unis like English students and everyone speaks English • Unis are easier to get into with lower entry grades • Maastricht: 16 courses in English, 37% international students, safe city, PBL

approach, liberal arts/natural science degrees, interviews by Skype ADDITIONAL DISADVANTAGES • *No guarantee of status quo regarding access to grant • Lots of bureaucracy – you need to be resourceful & assertive • You’ll be put under pressure and, if you don’t keep up academically in Year 1,

you WILL be kicked out – “easy to get in, difficult to stay in”

A FEW RANDOM REFLECTIONS ON OTHER

OPPORTUNITIES IN EUROPE

France: SKEMA Business School; Grande Ecole in silicon valley near Antibes; all courses in English; degree includes 2/3 internships with global companies + study in US & China; fees = Euro8060; Entry = BBC (A-level) DMM (BTEC Level 3); “It’s no good thinking national now, you have to be global.”

Ireland: NUI Maynooth has unique Law degree with year in Dublin law firm or at law school in USA, France or China

Norway: University of Nordland in darkness for 6 months a year

Medicine/Vet/Dentistry:

• Medicine at Milano/Bari/Napoli/Roma (E4K pa), Gdansk (E8Kpa), Kosice (E9K pa), Prague (E13K pa), Valencia (E20K pa); Need to learn the local language in time for clinical placement in Year 3

• Dentistry at Kosice (E9K pa), Valencia (E20K pa)

• Vet Med at Warsaw (E8K pa), Brno (E8Kpa), Valencia (E20Kpa) (also St Georges

See Eunicas, Medipathways and International Medicine Studies (IMS) for details

• fulbright.co.uk for info & advice + US College Day in London September 2013

• Emphasis on breadth; many voc degrees are postgrad (so “cost of becoming a doctor is 10 years + half a million dollars”); extra-curricular more important in personal statement; broad A-level base best

• Ivy League: Harvard only take 35 UK undergrads per year, but want more from UK state schools; “Needs-Blind Full-Need” funding available at MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Amherst – UK student from low-income family (→£50K @ MIT/→£40K @ Harvard) would graduate debt-free; 150 places on Sutton Trust 1 wk free summer school @MIT/Yale

• MIT embarrassed that only 1% of their UK applicants are from state sector

• SAT test window opens in July and fills up fast; post A-level application advantageous if not already in progress by end of Y12

• Florida State Uni has Gateway Programme – 1st year in London

• Syracuse Uni (NY) has Gap Year semester in London

• Personal link with Augustana College, private Liberal Arts college in South Dakota, fees £19Kpa, 99% get £4K-£11K international scholarship, v friendly!

Some random observations:

Australia /Canada: smaller range of broader undergrad degrees with more specialised graduate schools (academic breadth followed by disciplinary depth)

“Prepares students better for a world in which knowledge is rapidly renewed, academic boundaries are continuously shifting and employees need to communicate in a variety of cultural settings” (University of Melbourne)

Japan: Temple, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific, Doshisha Business School , Tama teach in English

China & Hong Kong: moving towards US-style Liberal Arts approach; all courses at University of Honk Kong taught in English with 99.8% graduate employment rate

Dubai/Singapore: Global BBA Business Administration at SPJain has Y1 in Singapore, Y2 in Dubai, Y3/4 in Sydney - “a complete education to inculcate a global mind-set and a launch-pad to a global career” - tuition fees $77K, housing fees $34K = $111K approx

Italy/USA/China: Similar triple-accredited scheme at Bocconi (Milan) + S. California Uni + Hong Kong UST

With young people around the world mobilising and increasingly going abroad to study, while UK gets increasingly monolingual, here’s another option:

Examples of unis with semester/year abroad (most other unis have them too): • Aston: work/study/teaching placements (or a combination) worldwide • East Anglia: study abroad in USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, NZ +

Erasmus in 21 European countries • Exeter: 400 students per year at 40 different European unis on Erasmus or

European Study programmes • Lancaster: 60 partner unis in Europe, USA, Canada, Mexico, Australia, NZ,

Hong Kong, Thailand, China (no tuition fees for full year Erasmus programme in Europe) + 28 non-language courses with Study Abroad

• Portsmouth: potential Erasmus options in 30 European countries + some opportunities worldwide

• Southampton: Erasmus partnerships with 24 European countries + some specific courses have worldwide links

• Sussex: year abroad at 130 unis in 30 countries • Swansea: partnerships with 100 unis worldwide, open to ALL students +

summer programmes in India, China, Zambia, Australia, Oklahoma/Colorado

Also most Modern Languages or American Studies degrees have a year abroad

• University of Nottingham has new campuses in China & Malaysia and has target of 25% undergrads spending at least a semester abroad

• University of Central Lancashire has opened multinational campus in Larnaca, Cyprus

• University of London Institute in Paris offers 3-year BA French Studies

with normal UK £9Kpa tuition fees and eligibility for normal UK tuition fee loan, student loan and grant (applied for via RHUL)

• Richmond University offer US-style degrees with dual qualifications, but with £9K fees and UK Student Loans (Richmond/Kensington), as does American Intercontinental University in Marylebone

Section 3:

EMPLOYMENT, APPRENTICESHIPS &

EMPLOYER/UNI PARTNERSHIPS

And now the landscape gets even more fragmented!

Employer-led schemes linked to specific unis with a salary and/or payment of all or part of your tuition fees. Examples:

• Placement period may or not be paid (Loughborough quote an average placement salary of £14K-£16K)

• Tuition fee for this period may also be heavily-discounted or not – check this out!

• Generally perceived by potential employers to be very advantageous + may lead directly to employment

and development programme (but may reduce their funding)

Currently in a state of flux as schemes start to take shape or convert from other existing programmes Example on next slide = HASBE (relevant to presentation I gave to SCHOSA last week)

BTEC Higher Apprenticeships in Sustainable Built Environment (HASBE)

APPRENTICESHIPS ENTERED BY OUR A-LEVEL STUDENTS IN 2012 (Good example of reality)

Finance Apprentice at King’s Theatre

Montessori Nursery Nurse Apprentice

Apprentice Training Administrator

Rolls-Royce Leather Shop Apprentice

RECRUIT- FROM- WITHIN APPRENTICESHIPS (my terminology, not official!)

HSBC: Join at direct entry level as cashier in a branch, or customer service adviser in a call centre and within 3 months can start Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Admin/Customer Service/Financial Services

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP PROVIDERS

Delivered in conjunction with national training providers specialising in one or several occupational areas e.g. Babcock, HIT, JTL, Kaplan, Pearson, QA, Remit, Skills for Care, Thatcham Auto Academy or big employers e.g. Starbucks, McDonalds, Travelodge

LOCAL APPRENTICESHIP PROVIDERS

Similarly a lot more apprenticeships are delivered through local training providers or colleges who operate within a particular region.

Many L3 leavers find jobs through employment agencies, websites, speculative letters, networking through family/friends/contacts, or stay with their current p/t employer. The link between post-18 courses studied and job entered is often tenuous and the range of jobs entered is quite rich in variety. Some study by distance learning e.g. Open University

• CBBC Presenter (now Radio 1 DJ)

• International Kite Surfer

• Travelling Fragrance Consultant

• Singer Songwriter

• Conservation Assistant (stately home)

• Revenue Protection Officer (South West Trains)

• Antiquarian Bookseller in Ross

• Ann Summers Party Organiser

• Freelance IT Marketing & Social Media Manager

• Smoking Adviser

• Superyacht Crew in the Mediterranean

• Professional Model

By searching websites creatively you can find many opportunities that are potentially open to an 18 year-old school/college-leaver – here are some I found earlier!

IKEA: Global opportunities, so if you want to work in Sweden, just click on Sweden. “These jobs are for people from all over the world who have a strong interest in moving abroad, so what’s stopping you?”

VIRGIN ATLANTIC CABIN CREW: GCSEs, min 5’2”, good swimmer; Megan got in last year with BTEC L3 Children’s Care Learning & Development + A-level English & Psychology

GLOBAL RADIO: Just go on the website to find about 26 different careers with Heart, Capital, Classic FM, LBC, Choice, Xfm and Gold

NATS: 40 UK locations, 18+ with 5 GCSEs A*-C + stringent health requirements; “Do you have the skills to be an Air Traffic Controller? Play our games to find out” – at nats.co.uk)

BBC PRODUCTION TALENT POOL: If selected, you’re eligible for short-term work on BBC programmes & productions and later to apply for Production Trainee Scheme)

BRITISH GAS ENERGY EXPERTS: £15K basic, 18+, own car needed)

LLOYDS TSB and HALIFAX: Customer Assistant roles starting on £14,500

NATIONWIDE: “Most people join us as Customer Reps and it’s all about teamwork”

• Changes in recruitment practices as a result of cuts and re-organisations

• Realistically, entry to the Emergency Services likely to demand previous employment/life experience

• But HM Forces ARE ALL ACTIVELY RECRUITING

• Although many police forces not currently recruiting, could consider opportunities as Special Constables or PCSOs.

• But those who say “I’m going to join the police when I leave school” need to get real – it’s not a club!

Self-employment: 18 year-old school/college leavers DO sometimes set up their own businesses and/or operate in a freelance capacity. Advice and financial assistance can be accessed through:

Shell Livewire The Prince’s Trust “StartUp” Scheme

Portfolio careers: Lots of students have started their careers by doing more than one job at the same time, or mixing part-time work with other activities

Temping or seasonal work: Another way some 18 year-olds get their foot in the door, often using private employment agencies

Section 4:

GAP YEAR OPPORTUNITIES &

FURTHER EDUCATION

In my experience….

• The term ‘gap year’ covers a multitude of sins!

• 75% of ‘gappers’ don’t have a deferred place at uni

• The decision to go to uni may not be made until late in the year – or maybe not for 5 or 6 years!

NB Some students will combine UK and overseas activities in a gap year. Random examples from my own experience at Havant Sixth Form College typify the range of things students do:

• Paid UK gap year schemes e.g.

Deloitte Scholars, IBM Futures, KPMG Gap Programme, Year in Industry

• Paid employment - often in routine retail, catering or fast food jobs + random things like:

Audio Fitter (Halfords), Call Centre Agent, Computer Games Developer, Dental Receptionist, Editorial Assistant (Royal Yachting Association), Health Centre Receptionist, Hotel Spa Attendant, Insurance Administrator, Learning Support Assistant, Lifeguard, Mountain Board Instructor (in Sussex!), Music Promoter & Blogger, Optical Adviser, PA to the MD of a motor dealers, Pre-School Assistant & Playworker, Sales Adviser & Model at a watersports shop, School Cleaner, Support Co-ordinator (Age UK), Show Jumper, Ward Hostess (psychiatric hospital)

• Volunteeering & other random things e.g.

Setting up poetry collective alongside the city’s poet laureate; Outdoor Leader at a scouting centre; Volunteer at Fishbourne Roman palace; Youth Worker in East London, Support Worker for boy with autism

• Multi-activity gap years e.g.

Asst Wedding Planner & charity work as Miss Portsmouth; Supervisor (Primark) + Basketball Coach; Sales Adviser at New Look + running a youth theatre co + tutoring + Classroom Asst + Avon agent; Sporting Giants program (rowing) in Henley-on-Thames; Lands End to John O’Groats charity bike ride

The enormously diverse ways in which students spend a whole or partial gap years abroad usually involve one of the following or a combination of them:

Voluntary work Travelling Paid work Further Education More random examples from my experience at Havant typify the range of things students do: Remunerated employment: Au Pair in Rome, Hockey Coach in Durban, Sailing Instructor in Greece, Camp America, Waitress at Sydney Opera House (via BUNAC), Chalet Host in the French/Swiss Alps, Validation Host at Whistler Ski Resort in Canada (via BUNAC – met several Hollywood stars), Sandwich Hand in a bread rolls shop in Canberra, PR for a bungee rocket in Tenerife, Ski Instructor in New Zealand, Holiday Rep in France, Hair Salon Receptionist in Wellington NZ Volunteering & other random activities: Turtle Conservation Volunteer in Nicaragua, Orphanage & Hospital Volunteer in Ghana, Conservation Volunteer in Ecuador, Teaching English in Thailand, Missionary work in Uganda, World Guiding Centre Volunteer in India, Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer in Namibia, Trainee Expedition Leader in Bolivia, PADI Diving course on the Great Barrier Reef, Discipleship Training School in Italy, Medical Support Worker in Kenya, Studying Art History in Florence, Travelling around the world surfing with his dad!

• Pre-Degree Art Foundation: still required or preferred by some universities or art colleges for some degree programmes

• Some students will take a sideways move and study for a Level 3 vocational course after perhaps having taken A-levels in more general subjects (but there may be funding implications)

• Re-sits/extra year: some students will take a year to do this at their own school or college, or a different one (but it’s much better to get your grades first time so you can use a gap year more creatively or lucratively!)

• Re-sits at an expensive ‘crammer’ e.g. • Westminster Tutors, Collingham, David Game College (all London) • Cherwell College, Oxford Tutorial College (both Oxford) • St Bartholomews (Brighton) • Bath Academy (Bath) • MPW (London/Cambridge/Birmingham) • Abbey DLD (London/Cambridge/Birmingham/Manchester)

• Some students will experience periods of unemployment after completing tertiary education and regional variations will influence this (see next slide)

• Also, if you worked hard at college/sixth form and need time to chill out and consider your options, then maybe a period of inactivity and contemplation is acceptable. (Nathan: “I want to be young and foolish for a while”)

• But a positive work ethic combined with motivation, enthusiasm,

willingness, resourcefulness and flexibility will help you succeed!
