A Sustainable Island in the Baltic Sea
Inverness 25 September 2009. Bertil Klintbom, Municipality of Gotland
Gotland -Population 57,000
In the Baltic, where?
Some energy facts about Gotland today
• Total energy consumption is 4400 Gwh/y
• The islands oil import is decreasing
• 65% of the energy use comes from fossil fuels
• The two main users of fossil fuel is the cement industry and transportation
• Tourism increases the population during summer
The political process
1992 Rio Summit -Agenda 21
1994 A 3-year Eco municipality project starts
1996 The first Environmental program approved
1998 Gotland approves the first Agenda 21document
2004 Energy Plan 2010 approved
2007 Revised Energy Plan 2010
2008 Revised Environmental program approved
2008 Vision Gotland 2025 approved and implemented
Who uses the energy?
Transports, a big challenge
Ferry leaving Portof Visby
Several companies hasflights to Gotland
We believe that the ecological and sustainablesociety can be reached by,
- reducing use of materials that are found in natureand are non-renewable
- reducing pollution from production and use ofenergy
- by preserving natures own renewable productionand variety
- by developing a society with effective sustainableuse of resources to fulfil mankind's basic needs
Energy 2010, Gotlands new plan for the future
Our vision for the future
• The visions foundation is that the entire society
will work together and shares the ambition tocreate a sustainable and ecologically based island
• The goal is a sustainable society with sufficientenergy 2025
• The use of renewable energy sources willcontribute to society when it comes to social andeconomical growth for the island
• The work carried out on Gotland will contribute ina positive way and help slow down the climatechange
Strategy 2007- 2010
• Reduce the need for fossil fuels
• Organise the need for transports and develop systems for Sustainable Communications
• Lower energy needs in buildings
• Technical equipment should be chosen carefully
4
Figures set out for 2010
• Maximum fossil fuel used for electricity, heating andtransportation shall not exceed 55%
• Installed Wind energy systems shall reach at least 160MW
• District heating shall use at least 95 % renewable andrecycled energy sources
• The amount of renewable energy used fortransportation shall as a minimum be 8%.
• A new vision for 2025 shall be approved withambitious targets
Renewable Energy on Gotland
Biogas Wind Power
Solar Power Bio Energy –Wood chips
Biogas, the future for transports?
We believe so and the city buses will runon locally produced biogas spring 2010and the municipality has approved abiogas strategy for Gotland
