A Tale of Two Crabs by Mike Staines
Two years ago we caught the crab which club member Mike Wright is holding. We gave that one away to my grandkids from Melbourne. Last month we both went crabbing in the Swan again. Below is the latest crab (which I didn’t weigh). It went over the 30 inch tape mark, without stretching. It was frighteningly big and it was sporting a pretty, new, blue shell. Tasted fantastic!

Cockburn Power Boat Association Commodore’s Report
On behalf of the Management Committee and Staff of CPBA, I hope that a happy Easter was had by all our members and their families.
Over the Easter weekend we had a group of around 30 people visit us from the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club. This group has been coming down to visit the Southern waters of Cockburn Sound for a number of years now and every year they are still surprised by the waterway and Islands we have access to in the area. They are also amazed at the facilities that CPBA Inc. offers its’ members. ORSSC currently have a club room facility, some boat storage, but are having to use the public ramps at Ocean Reef. We are truly lucky to have what we have and we all owe a lot to the pioneers of our club, and the people who have been involved in the running of this great club over its long history. The management committee and staff is committed to ensuring that the club flourishes into the future, and as such have recently conducted a survey in order to establish what direction the membership wants the club to head in. The results of the survey are yet to be analyzed, however, the response from our membership in completing the survey was outstanding. Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete it. Your input is very much appreciated. The results of the survey will assist in the planning and decision making of the Management Committee and staff moving forward.
As you approach the club and drive around it to launch your boat, you will notice that there are a few new signs that have been installed.
Entrance sign
Advertising sign facing the public ramp area
Preparation area sign Detailing that all members either launching or retrieving vessels MUST make use of the preparation bays.
This is so that there is a flow of traffic in the ramp area, and that we also take care of the bitumen surface around the ramp area that is subject to damage when trailers are screwed around in tight radii. The support of our members is sought here to follow the house rules for the safety and traffic flow in and around the ramp areas, and to assist in reducing the damage to the bitumen surface in order to stave off expensive repair works that will result otherwise. Socially there are a few really exciting functions that are coming up. Please review the club website: www.cockburnpowerboats.com.au for details. Whilst having a look around the website, if you have any
ideas or information that you feel could enhance the website, please forward your thoughts to Hazel and Cindy at the office.
Thankyou and Happy Easter from our Ocean Reef visitors

PLENTY IN STOCK. CALL AT THE OFFICE - $64
We arrived at the Club around 8 o’clock not expecting to see many starters as the temperature was expected to reach into the forties. How wrong can you get; a roll up of 18 willing workers.
It didn’t take long before things started to move. First off was the laying of a concrete pad for the dangerous goods shed which was taken care of Tom, Ron, Bob, Mick and Alan who had all shown their skill in this area at our last busy bee. George F took on the unenviable job of removing the last of the office window security screens. Unfortunately, all the screws were badly rusted and required a lot of patience to remove them. Good on you George; perseverance and persistence won the day. George T, Kevin and Colin took on the job of lowering the shower curtains, replacing the broken shower and installing the safety rails in the disabled toilet/shower. A small painting job that needed to be finished was taken on by Mick’s wife Leonie. Much appreciated, we will keep you in mind for any future paint jobs.
The hole appearing in the bitumen near the launch ramps was repaired by Mal and Laurie. Hopefully this will stop any further deterioration for the time being. The wind sock has been finally installed. This was carried out by Roy; he told me he was a ‘gun’ welder. Time will tell. As usual, George W was busy with making up ID plates and Ernie looked after the BBQ area. Morning tea was, as usual, a great spread. Our thanks to the ladies involved; Vera, Di, Claudia, Leonie and her young daughter Heidi who took over the job of quality control making sure the cakes were OK.
Our next busy bee is the 9th April. Come along, I am sure we can find something for you to do.
William Davey.

Cruising
Hi Cruisers, Well what a great long weekend March 6th and 7th for all that went up river to Elizabeth Quay. We headed off from CPBA to have brecky at the Dome Port Coogee, the new finger pens make for easy tie up.
Conditions were great, took our time cruising up river to catch up with Laurie and Claudia.
We all managed to get a pen at Elizabeth Quay (all 7 boats), very lucky, as it was packed
After we got settled, it was time to head on down to the watering hole (The Lucky Shag) for lunch. The view from upstairs was great and so was the company…….. Time to head off back to the boats and find a mooring, as Becky’s port does not allow overnight stays.
After getting a mooring, and helping Dragons II get on theirs (after hearing “I said there isn’t any Friggin rope on this mooring”). We again migrated to Dragons II for a few drinks…….
Thank you all again Cruisers for making this a great weekend, you are a great bunch of boaties. See you on the water (when I get my boat fixed). Steve Imgrund….. Black Ice.

Sport Fishing
Dateline…Sunday February 7 2016 Venue: Port Bouvarde Yacht Club Peel Harvey Estuary At 7.30am 5 boats prepared for a dash across the Estuary in search of Big Blues. Safety briefing done, gauges issued the Group headed towards the east through the Zig Zag, destination Boggy Bay. The weather gods were in our favour, light easterly breeze which dropped further. The sun was reasonably warm but the breeze kept us somewhat cool. The boats split up some going closer to the shore others staying more towards the Point Grey bank. As the case has been all summer there were heaps of crabs but they were just undersize. We crabbed for 3.5 hours and most boats were able to report that they had their bag limit or close to it. We headed back to the Yacht Club ramp for some lunch and refreshments, after washing down the boats. The Club is located right next to the Dawesville Cut southern groyne, and looks east to Point Grey and south to the Harvey end of the Harvey estuary. Under the shade of the Club’s buildings we set up the cookers, trestles and chairs for a well-earned crab lunch. There were 20 members and families enjoying the conviviality and facilities. About 80 crabs caught on the day, which was more than enough for those attending. I think some went home for some crustacean lunches the following day. Adam Porter won the prize for the biggest crab – 55cm tip to tip. A great day was had by all attending. Warren Keating Rusty Dax

Chris Gaudet has agreed to help us again with this evening, both with materials, and hands on instruction. Chris has been the proprietor of the BOATING HARDWARE PRO SAIL shop. Chris has also arranged a bulk purchase of Swedish Fids to the Club (used for rope splicing). We will be offering these to our members for a special price of $7.00 for those who attend. (normal retail is about $8.00) A refundable $7.00 deposit will be charged at the door for these tools, and you can decide whether to purchase at the conclusion of the evening.
