Even though the weather can’t make up its mind, the fall season is well underway as I write this, and with it, a time for reflection and thanksgiving. I am very grateful for the many contributions our MPTA members make to physical therapy practice, the professional association,

and to society. The Fall MPTA Conference provided an opportunity to recognize these contributions at the Honors and Awards Dinner. The recipients of this year’s awards and honors are identified in this issue of Shorelines. Here is an overview of the MPTA awards and honors. We urge you to start thinking now about nominations for next year.

Physical Therapy Practice

The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialization (ABPTS) PT Specialty Certification process and the PTA Recognition of Advanced Proficiency are designed to recognize PTs and PTAs who have advanced practice skills and knowledge in a specific practice area. The MPTA has over 300 ABPTS-certified specialists, including this year’s 32 newly certified specialists and 1 new PTA with advanced proficiency. Having therapists advance to these levels of practice benefits our profession and our patients individually and collectively.

MPTA recognizes excellence in physical therapy practice by awarding Outstanding PT, Outstanding PTA, and Outstanding PT-PTA clinician awards, designed to recognize dedication, professionalism, and achievements by PTs and PTAs in the clinical setting. We also recognize student PT/PTA excellence through the Outstanding Student awards, identifying future leaders in physical therapy practice.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATEHolly Lookabaugh-Deur, PT, DSc, GCS, CEEAADirector, Professional Development & Membership, MPTA

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE continued from page 1

Membership is the life of any successful professional organization. You are the reason the MPTA exists and you are the one who will ultimately create opportunities for us to move forward together as a profession.

I am pleased to report that the membership effort will be kicking into high gear under the new leadership of Patrick Lawrence, PT, DPT, and Jorgie Hadder, PT, DPT, along with the support of the rest of the committee—Lauren Ramer, Elizabeth (Libby) Sheahan, Elizabeth Ramey, Crystal Lamb, Sara Reece, Amber Lenhart, and Britney Rauch. If you know them, be sure to thank them for serving the MPTA the next time you see them!

We are holding our first meeting after the submission of this article, but I can certainly share that we will be in “full court press” for membership this year. Never has there been a

more important time to be a member, and our job is to show the Michigan PTs and PTAs just how important it is! We feel strongly that the benefits of membership should include discounts for CEUs and professional development requirement (PDR) credits towards licensure. (The membership discounts will make a big difference!) We will be promoting membership through “Sign a Colleague” incentives and other promotions in 2016.

Stay tuned for more info! Remember that membership is not about writing a check. It is about staying engaged in your profession, a profession that needs your help and involvement in preventing encroachment, promoting who we are and what we can do in our communities, and transforming our society at all levels and all ages.

Thank you for your membership!

Clinical Education

Excellent clinical education experiences are critical in the development of our future colleagues. The MPTA recognizes the efforts of both clinical instructors (CIs) and center coordinators of clinical education (CCCEs). The Noreen Clouten Outstanding CCCE and Cindy Kinkaid Outstanding CI awards are named for individuals who inspired clinicians and academic programs to raise clinical education to new heights in Michigan.

Scholarship and Research

Scholarship and research are required to inform best practices in physical therapy, allowing us to provide evidence-based care to our clients and patients. The Mabel E. Holton Award is awarded to recognize a specific scholarly publication. (Mabel Holton was the first president of the MPTA.) The Richard E. Darnell Award recognizes individuals who conduct research and also mentor others in clinical research. Outstanding Research Poster awards are given to practitioners and students selected as the best of the poster presentations at the MPTA Fall Conference.

Service to the Profession

This category recognizes individuals who have given tirelessly through service to the profession, education, clinical research, and/or service to the community. The Marjorie N. Stamm Outstanding Service Award and the PTA Outstanding Service Award represent the highest level of recognition for PTs and PTAs, respectively. The Jane Murdock Advocacy Award recognizes individuals who provide outstanding service and leadership in advocacy. The Alan S. Jeffrey Outstanding Award recognizes outstanding service by an individual outside of the physical therapy profession who makes an exceptional and enduring impact on our profession.

Find out more about these awards and how to nominate someone on the MPTA website under “Resources.” The MPTA is full of members with dedication, service, and talent. Help us recognize them next year.

MPTA MEMBERS: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

PT Day of Service: Your Donations Helping Families in the Northern DistrictCrystal Lamb, SPT, APTA Core Ambassador

The Father Fred Foundation and many Northern District families are thankful for the donations gathered at the 2015 MPTA Fall Conference. The Father Fred Foundation is an organization that serves to make a difference within the communities surrounding Traverse City, Michigan to ensure that no one “falls through the cracks.” A charity drive for this foundation was organized by the MPTA Student Relations Committee (SRC) to allow physical therapy professionals in Michigan to participate in the first annual Global PT Day of Service on October 17, 2015.

Global PT Day of Service (PTDOS) was created as a day for all of those individuals involved in the physical therapy profession to come together, give back, and make a difference in their communities. Physical therapy is all about making a difference in our patients’ lives each day. PTDOS will do just that, but will also extend beyond our patients and reach out to our communities.

Thank you to all of you who donated and helped to make a difference! All MPTA districts participated to gather donations within their district and transported food items, winter clothing, and household goods to the MPTA Fall Conference at Crystal Mountain. These collective donations were delivered to the Father Fred Foundation and are being distributed to those in need. In addition, attendees of the 2015 MPTA Fall Conference donated a total of $378 directly to the Father Fred Foundation, which will be used to purchase perishable food items for families.

For more information, “like” the Father Fred Foundation and PT Day of Service on Facebook. Feel like you are missing out on MPTA Events? Make sure to “like” the Michigan Physical Therapy Association and your district page on Facebook to stay informed!

Editor's Note:I have been an MPTA member for two decades plus and have been involved in the association in minor ways over that two decades with my latest role as the Editor of Shorelines. I have enjoyed the experience and keeping abreast of the actions and activities of the organization through this role. The role of Editor has served a means to being involved in the organization as my four children have grown and become so active that attending the MPTA conferences has not been possible for a few years due to opposing events in their lives - you all know how that happens.

Members should know that Shorelines needs to be fluid. Times have changed and the methods of producing a newsletter have evolved allowing for new and innovative ways and options for communicating member news. Additionally, budgets have changed over the years and have influenced the methods of news delivery. With technology, we have exciting opportunities to reach out to members in multiple ways. With the APTA assisting the association and innovation providing new avenues, members should expect the Board of MPTA and the new Editor to examine the way in which news is shared with members and to provide options for this delivery.

Yes, I said "new" Editor. At this time, I am stepping down as Editor of Shorelines. I feel that it is time that someone else step in to invigorate and offer a new perspective for Shorelines. Fresh direction will assist the association in growth. I have had some personal life challenges over the past year and have some exciting opportunities ahead for me with the new year. With two teenagers, a tweener and a pre-schooler, as well as some professional goals awaiting to be met, I feel I need to re-direct myself. I took a course in personal leadership this past summer and one thing that I finally got - one of those "ah-hah" moments - was that I need to be self-full to be helpful. Rather than feeling self-full I have felt half-full for a while trying to meet all of the demands of multiple commitments. I know that many of you can relate to this. . .

I have appreciated the support from the MPTA and membership over the years and the opportunity to spread the good news about the great work the MPTA does for physical therapists and citizens of Michigan. The MPTA is strong and has great leadership! Shorelines will continue to assist in the efforts of the MPTA and I look forward to reading about these efforts!

Sincerely, Karen E.H. Grossnickle, PT, MSPT

LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT Craig Miller, PT, Legistlative Director

Craig Miller, PT

REIMBURSEMENT DIRECTOR’S REPORTMartin Sytsema, PT, MSPT, OMPT, CIMT, FAAOMPT

Like any other year, there is no shortage of work to be done on the payment front. However, unlike prior years, we had a new task: gaining reimbursement for direct access visits. Our efforts were rewarded early in the year when Priority Health agreed to pay for direct access visits. We have continued discussions with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM), and although they are not yet willing to pay for direct access visits, they are willing to look at the data and consider it. Communication will continue in 2016.Another area of work came about after BCBSM published an article in the August issue of The Record titled, Additional procedure codes payable to chiropractors for physical therapy services. The Reimbursement Committee met with BCBSM in early August to explain the many problems with this article. A second meeting was held in

October and language was agreed upon for an updated article in The Record that will be published in December. Transition of payment will continue in 2016 and beyond. The therapy cap will continue, as will the exceptions process, through the end of 2017. The Manual Medical Review process has changed and will no longer target Michigan therapists as a whole but will target specific problem cases. PQRS will continue, but it will be combined into a merit-based incentive payment system (MIPS) starting in 2019. Higher payments will be given to physical therapists who participate in alternative payment systems starting in 2019. Emphasis will be on billing for quality of therapy provided versus quantity provided.

Staying informed on these and other payment changes will be vital next year and into the future. We will do our best to help you through these changes, but you are encouraged to follow the payment resources on www.apta.org.

We are halfway through the 2015-16 legislative sessions and have seen some significant activity on the federal and state legislative fronts. First, on the federal level, we’ve seen successful elimination of the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR). Unfortunately,

APTA did not realize one of its legislative priorities: elimination of the therapy cap. Instead, the therapy cap and the exceptions process were extended through December 31, 2017. APTA has remained active, just recently completing a grass roots campaign to address physical therapist student loan forgiveness through the National Health Service Corps. Additionally, APTA noted another successful Federal Advocacy Forum in June, culminating in PT Day on Capitol Hill. Michigan was well represented by MPTA’s Federal Affairs Liaison Matt Likins and a number of other MPTA members. MPTA appreciates the tremendous grass roots efforts of all of these individuals.

MPTA has House Bill 4712 (HB4712) as a current priority, a legislation that would add chiropractors to the list of individuals who can prescribe physical therapy. This bill was passed out of the House Health Policy Committee by a narrow margin in October, and at the writing of this article remains in the Michigan House. MPTA continues to engage legislators to better understand the impact of this legislation

and why this legislation is unnecessary. MPTA is not the only group opposed to HB4712, as there is a broader coalition of groups opposed as well. We have had many members participate in the grass roots efforts to keep policy makers informed of this ill-advised legislation. MPTA needs all of its members to remain active and to keep representatives informed on this issue. Listed below are action items that are needed to achieve success on both the federal and state level:

• Download the APTA Action App: Provides easy access to information and allows quick action.• Visit MPTAs legislative page at https://mpta.com/legislative/: Provides news to keep you up to date and resources to engage policy makers.• Contact your Michigan representative: Use the Action App, call and/or email to inform them to say no to HB4712!

MPTA is committed to improving the profession of physical therapy in Michigan, and through your actions and efforts, we can assure the people of Michigan receive physical therapy services from qualified physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students of physical therapy. Thank you for all that you do! Respectfully,Craig Miller, PT

As we move into 2016, I would like to review the objectives of the MPT-PAC and ask for your continued support. We have had a slight decrease in our total contributions in 2015 (YTD $9,631) as well as club level contributions (donations over $100). While the pending legislation regarding chiropractic prescriptive authority over physical therapy is our most critical issue, there are always additional issues that require MPTA’s attention (eg, auto no fault, threats to our scope of practice that are happening in other states, interstate compacts that impact licensure, etc). Therefore, it is imperative that we continue to educate our legislators about physical therapy through fundraisers. Each fundraiser is important in getting face time with key legislators and typically cost between $200 and $300. This year, with your help, we were able to attend and support 32 total fundraisers. While this may seem positive, we are not always able to support as many of the legislators in key leadership positions and important committees, such as the House Health Policy Committee, as we would like. Meanwhile, other health care PACs, including chiropractors, are much better supported. In summation, your contribution to MPT-PAC remains vitally important to the success of MPTA’s legislative priorities. Please consider making a secure online donation via www.mptpac.org today!

Finally, I would also like to review a few FAQs:

1. Who Can Donate to MPT-PAC? Any individual can contribute to the MPT-PAC, but no corporate donations can be accepted. The MPT-PAC is not supported by MPTA membership dues. MPTA legislative successes are funded entirely from donations to the MPT-PAC. Advances in physical therapy practice in Michigan are contingent upon your generous gifts.

2. What does the MPT-PAC do for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants? Contributing to the MPT-PAC allows one to have an increased ability to contact one's local legislators, increased ability to be perceived as a local health care leader, opportunities to affect a legislator's image of one's facility and physical therapy services, and increased success in shaping health care policy in Michigan.

3. What are the objectives of MPT-PAC?• Promote the profession.• Support candidates running for the Michigan State House and Senate that are sensitive to the issues affecting your profession.• Educate legislators and candidates about our profession.• Coordinate and facilitate district and statewide PAC fundraising activities that are necessary support for these objectives.• Distribute expenditures according to MPTA legislative goals.

After all of these years, the requirements for relicensing are final! The MPTA has been updating its membership at each conference (most recently at the Fall Conference). Here are the highlights: General Provisions for Professional Development Requirements (R 338.7138 in the PT General Rules)

• The administrative rules regarding the professional development requirements (PDRs) to assure protection of the general public were effective on Sept.15, 2015. • Licensure renewal for both physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will remain the same until July 2017, which is the beginning of the first, 2-year cycle of earning PDRs. • 24 PDRs are required for relicensure for both the physical therapist and physical therapist assistant, and they must be earned during the 2 years prior to relicensure. o July 2019: Relicensure in July 2019 will be the first time that PTs and PTAs will need to verify completion of 24 PDR credits.

• PDRs can be earned during a wide variety of activities such as student supervision, earned CEUs, reading a professional article, and more. • Forms will be generated by the state of Michigan over the next year in preparation for the 2017 onset of auditable records that therapists will be required to maintain. Records should be kept for 3 years after application for license renewal.• Random auditing by the state is expected. • No more than 12 PDR credits for online learning may be earned during one 24-hour period.• Two activities that are identical or substantially identical in any 1 renewal cycle will earn credit for only 1 PDR. • 1 PDR credit must be earned in pain and symptom management.• 1 PDR credit must be training in identifying victims of human trafficking. (This has recently been signed into law for all licensed health professionals, except veterinarian professionals, and we will inform you as more details arise.)

The following is an overview of the 19 categories where PDR’s can be earned.

The MPTA Eastern District leadership team continues to organize engaging events for Eastern District members to advance practice! So far, we have had 1 webinar, 2 continuing education courses, and 1 evening lecture and meeting. Combined, we have had over 200 participants at these events.

We thank Western District member Holly Lookabaugh -Deur, PT, DSc, GCS, CEEAA, for presenting a continuing education course on November 14 titled “Oncology Rehabilitation: Exploring Best Practice in Survivorship at Macomb Community College.”

We also thank Michigan’s Federal Affairs Liaison Matt Likins, PT, and MPTA President Dr Sue Talley, for speaking during the October 28 meeting and education session where over 80 clinicians and students gathered to learn more about legislation at the state and federal levels in addition to the educational lecture addressing how cognitive function influences fall risk.

More events are planned for the beginning of 2016: • “Neurologic Physical Therapy Rehab” course: Topic: Pusher Syndrome; January 23 at the Rehab Institute of Michigan. Start time intended to be 10:00 am to accommodate driving in Michigan in January. • “Evidence-Based Cardiovascular Assessment” course: May 14, 2016, Oakland University, 4-hour course with a lab. • Online educational webinars: As of print, the dates are TBD, but likely will occur in February and/or March. Stay informed through our communication channels.

Information regarding registration and attendance cost is forthcoming and will be found either on our Facebook page (“MPTA Eastern District”), the MPTA webpage, or through our monthly email communication in addition to this newsletter. Join us for these educational events and meetings. As we continue to plan events for our District, if you would like to host a meeting or serve as an educational speaker for a meeting, please contact one of the district leaders Katie Palazzo and Jennifer Blackwood ([email protected] or [email protected]). We welcome you to future meetings and look forward to seeing you at the MPTA Spring Conference or at one of our District events. Stay healthy, Michigan!

On Saturday, September 19, the Northern District hosted its first live continuing education event and membership meeting in Traverse City. Dr Jeff Moore of Iron Mountain, MI presented on "Manual Therapy Management for the Lumbar Spine." Attendance for the course was completely full and attracted attendees from across the District and students from CMU, GVSU, and UM Flint. Over lunch, Northern District leaders Tim Zipple and Chris Hinze gave updates to attendees on PDR requirements, legislative issues, and sought feedback for upcoming District events. Due to the excellent response to this course, we have already booked Dr Moore to return to the District to present a 2-day cervical spine management course. This course will be held the weekend of September 17, 2016. Zipple and Hinze are continuing to plan additional events based on feedback from District members. Saturday District meetings and full-day courses on several other topics are being considered by District leaders to attract current and new members to District events.

Keep your eye on the MPTA Northern District Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mptanorth?fref=ts) for updates on future District meetings and events!

The UP District held its annual UP Golf Social on August 19 at Timberstone Golf in Iron Mountain. This year, 11 golfers challenged one of the premier courses in the UP. Team 1, consisting of Neal Johnson, Andy Mendina, and Edward Mathis, came out strong with a -4 in the 9-hole scramble; followed by Team 3 (Tim McGuire, Kae McGuire, Lane Lindeman, and Mike Zahn) at -2 and Team 2 (Kip Hartman, Joe Lewis, Jeff Moore, and Kelsey Moore) at even. Overall, there was an excellent display of golf, with highlights including a towering drive by long champion Joe Lewis on hole #3, an excellent placement close to the pin by Kip Hartman on hole #8, and numerous lost balls by Lane Lindeman, who bested the tight competition for this year’s gag prize. Chair Edward Mathis also provided comic relief for the winning team by taking some of the largest divots in UPGS history and then driving a fairway shot 4 inches straight into the ground. Despite this, Mathis claimed this year’s “Crimson Jacket” as the 2015 UPGS

champion with an amazing (ie, lucky) 100-yard putt to claim the MVP honors.

Afterwards, the golfers and other UP District members met for pizza and a discussion on current state and national issues while raising $825 for MPT-PAC. Please check out and “like” our Facebook page to see pictures from the event. Thanks to everyone that attended the event and we look forward to bringing the UPGS to an all new location in 2016.

The MPT-PAC fundraiser was a great success with fantastic food and conversation at the home of WD Vice Chair Meri Goehring. A big thank you to Meri and Bob for providing a beautiful atmosphere!

The Fall Western District meeting hosted by Andrews University had a wonderful turnout with over 80

students and 40 clinicians in attendance for a presentation by Erl Pettman, PT, MCSP, MCPA, FCAMT, titled "The Psoas Pyramid." Thank you to Andrews University for housing and feeding us! And thank you to all who attended, as this was the highest attendance at a Western District meeting this year and in as many years as I have been going to them!

As we transition to new leadership, we would like to thank Vice Chair Meri Goehring and Secretary Susan McCourt for their dedication and service. We want to welcome and congratulate Tom Gustafson, as he becomes the new vice chair, and Jessica Kuipers, as she becomes the new secretary for the Western District. They are both GVSU alumni and work at the Center for Physical Rehabilitation. They assume their new roles on January 1. Tom is already excitedly planning the first meeting of the new year and we have some great programming coming up! We are looking to provide PDR credit and/or CEUs for all Western District meetings, while providing a variety of topics applicable across the continuum of care. We are also working on bringing in some student-specific programming. Please keep an eye out for the Western District emails for information about upcoming meetings, fundraisers, local educational events, and health policy updates!

STUDENT RELATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATELaura Kate Morse, SPT

This year, the SRC has been busy at work, planning several events to help improve student knowledge and perception of physical therapy from both a career and membership standpoint. We were excited to host the SRC Meet and Greet in Lansing this year and even more so to see one of the largest turn outs in SRC history! The SRC Meet and Greet allowed students from multiple institutions to congregate and explore all that the SRC and MPTA has to offer, as well as give them the opportunity to see what’s coming for this year's Student Conclave. Students who attended the Meet and Greet voted upon the final logo and received some snippets about the topics that are going to be covered at Student Conclave.

While the Meet and Greet was a success, we would also like to highlight a more recent accomplishment. In honor of National Physical Therapy Month (October), the SRC, in combination with the core ambassador group, helped organize a food drive at this year’s Fall Conclave in Crystal Mountain. The drive was a great success and raised outstanding donations for local food pantries. The amount of support we received by each district (and those students from those districts) was better than we could have ever hoped for! While the amount of goods this event produced was fantastic, we also wanted to highlight the hard work that it took to arrange it. The amount of work the core ambassador group did to connect each school’s student representative showed. This event allowed us to see how integrated we can be in each school to be able to transcribe information as efficiently and productively as possible.

Currently, the SRC is working on assembling the finished product for the upcoming Student Conclave in Central Michigan. As of now, we have chosen our logo, topics, and are finishing up reaching out to speakers. Student Conclave 2016 is shaping up to be one of the best yet, with a variety of topics suitable to all students of all interests.

In addition to adding to the overall Conclave experience, this year we will also begin at an earlier time to decide the future makeup of the Student Relations Committee. Applications are currently open (email Niki Chakur at [email protected]) and due December 31. Elections will take place at Conclave and winners will be announced there (April 1)! Make sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to learn more!

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PHYSICALTHERAPY MONTH: GO ORANGECrystal Lamb, SPT, APTA Core Ambassador

Many Michigan DPT and PTA students joined in the celebration of National Physical Therapy Month through an “orange out” on October 29. The MPTA Student Relations Committee (SRC) organized this day for students across all programs to wear orange and share their celebration through social media to promote the awareness of physical therapy. APTA hosts National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) each October to recognize how the physical therapy profession is helping to transform society through optimizing movement in people’s lives. NPTM is important because it is our opportunity to accept this recognition and celebrate our profession. Each day, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students are making a difference in their patient’s lives. We can make a larger difference by reaching more people and increasing our opportunities to transform more lives. It is important to raise awareness and educate the public regarding the role PTs and PTAs have in helping people improve their quality of life through restoring function, optimizing movement, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Throughout the month of October, physical therapy clinics and health organizations all across Michigan participated in NPTM by providing education to the public and to the staff within their organization on the importance of physical therapy. Let’s keep the momentum up and continue to promote the important role physical therapy has within the health field! Check out #PTmonth for all NPTM activities throughout the country.

Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (tDPT) Program

Thinking about completing a tDPT? Now is the time! LAST CLASS WILL BE ADMITTED IN FALL 2016

Oakland University currently has a transitional DPT program for those

PTs who graduated with a bachelors or masters degree and wish to obtain a doctoral degree in physical therapy. Students who have a bachelors degree complete 30 credits and those with a bachelor’s degree complete 26 credits. As we anticipate that the number of individuals who wish to pursue this option will decrease, we will only be admitting students into the tDPT at Oakland until the Fall of 2016. We encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing the tDPT to consider applying to the program in the near future. The tDPT is offered in conjunction with our certificate programs and/or with other elective courses of your interest, with many courses offered on-line, evenings or weekends. Most students complete the program in 1 – 2 years on a part-time basis, depending on previous course work. Students can begin the program in fall, winter or summer. Information on and deadlines for applying can be found on the Oakland University Graduate Admissions website at http://www.oakland.edu/grad Please contact Chris Stiller, the tDPT Program Coordinator, at [email protected] if you have any questions or visit the Physical

In support of the Foundation for Physical Therapy, a total of 146 schools participated in the record-breaking 2014-2015 Miami-Marquette Challenge. The Challenge raised $275,423, the highest annual total in the history of the fundraiser. Thanks to the participation of PT and PTA students from 235 different schools, the Challenge has now raised over $3-million since its inception in 1989!

The Foundation wishes to thank the students of Andrews University, Delta College, Finlandia University, and The University of Michigan–Flint for their support of the Challenge. The record-breaking success of the Challenge would not be possible without their valued contributions.

This year’s first place winner was the University of Pittsburgh. Virginia Commonwealth University earned second place and the University of Miami came in third place. We welcome the University of Pittsburgh as cohost for the upcoming 2015-2016 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge.

The Foundation for Physical Therapy was established in 1979 as a national, independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality and delivery of physical therapy care by providing support for scientifically-based and clinically-relevant physical therapy research, doctoral scholarships, and fellowships. The annual Marquette Challenge is a grassroots fundraising effort coordinated and carried out by PT and PTA students across the country to support the Foundation for Physical Therapy’s mission.

Jan Hughes-Austin, PT, MPT, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Family and Preventative Medicine at the University of California–San Diego, is the recipient of

the 2014 Miami-Marquette Challenge Research Grant. Her project will examine first-degree relatives of patients with rheumatoid arthritis; specifically, their vertebral bone mineral density, inflamed joints, and physical activity will be studied. The Challenge also funded a PODS scholarship in 2015, which went to Trevor Lentz, PT, MPT, of the University of Florida.

Students of all PT and PTA programs in the state of Michigan are encouraged to support the Foundation for Physical Therapy and physical therapy research. To learn how you can support the Challenge, please visit the Foundation’s website at www.Foundation4PT.org, call the Foundation at 800/875-1378, or email Marquette student coordinators at [email protected]. Contributions for the 2015-2016 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge should be submitted by April 21, 2016.

ANDREWS UNIVERSITYBill Scott, PT, MSPT

Andrews University Department of Physical Therapy is in full swing with a new cohort. We welcome the new Class of 2018 to campus. Our students have found time in their busy lives to represent our department in many service projects. Our department once again was involved in “Operation Christmas Child.” Our students and faculty held a packing party and were able to fill approximately 140 boxes with great joy. This fall we were involved in the Berrien Springs Community Health Fair at the Living Word Fellowship Church and School of Health Professions Health Career Fair on campus. Our students educated the community about the profession and assisted in basic screenings.

Our students held the first ever PT service clinic. This clinic was a 1-day pro bono clinic for the area. Our students paired up with area clinician’s and faculty to do screenings and advise patients in physical therapy care.

Andrews University was excited to host the MPTA Western District Meeting. The presentation was “The Psoas Pyramid,” presented by Erl Pettman, PT, MCSP, MCPA, FCAMT. Updates on HB4712 and other legislative issues were also presented. We thank all of the clinicians who attended. We are proud of our students and are looking forward to a great year here on the sunset coast.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY J. Tim Zipple, PT, DSc, OCS, FAAOMPT

The satellite program at Michigan Tech University continues to thrive and most of the technical glitches in the system have been worked out. We now have a cohort of second-year students to act as mentors to the new cohort

that started in May of this year. To encourage APTA/MPTA membership in these 2 cohorts, we have a friendly competition underway to see how many students join our professional organizations.

We had our 10th Annual Professional Transition and Recognition Ceremony at CMU in September, recognizing SPTs Kaitlyn Allore, Adam Hammer, and Andrew Harrington with awards for their dedication to the program and profession of physical therapy. Our invited speaker, Rebecca Craik, PT, PhD, FAPTA, provided words of wisdom to our students heading out on clinical rotations.

For faculty news, we continue to actively seek 2 additional faculty members to join our team in the areas of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal dysfunction. We have completed some phone interviews and began the on-campus interviews in October. We had 2 faculty members recently compete in the Tough Mudder competition in Brooklyn, MI, on September 26, and we have formed a team to compete in the Man vs. Mountain winter obstacle course in Mount Pleasant in February 2016. We are not taking any prisoners! Additionally, we had our 10th Annual Powderpuff Football game between the women of first and second-year student cohorts in September, where sticking to tradition, the second-year women got the best of the first-year group.

Many of our first and second-year students attended the SRC Meet and Greet in late September and began to build their professional networks. Faculty continue to encourage participation in this organization through membership or running for executive board positions.

DELTA COLLEGE Chris Hausbeck, PT, DPT

Fall has been an exciting time for the PTA students at Delta College. First and second-year students continue to model professional involvement by attending events such as the MPTA SRC Meet and Greet and the MPTA Fall Conference. The second-year students are finishing up final projects and exams before departing for clinical rotations on November 18. Delta College is happy to work together with the CMU DPT Program again this year on a collaborative learning experience. To summarize, the experience involves the DPT students writing an initial evaluation on a patient and the PTA students performing a patient treatment session on this patient. Feedback is exchanged from students on both sides and everyone walks away with a valuable understanding of the PT-PTA relationship.

On January 9 and 10, 2016, Delta College will be hosting the “ScoreBuilders PTA Exam On Campus Review” course to help prepare the second-year students for the national exam. First-year students are also encouraged to attend the 2-day course to provide them with valuable studying techniques that will help them throughout the remainder of the program. Delta students have consistently rated this course as worthwhile to help them pass the NPTAE.

Finally, the first-year students are gearing up to take over Project SHARED. The students work to collect assistive devices from individuals/facilities who no longer need them and then issue these devices to people in need. Anyone wishing to donate devices or inquire about obtaining a device for a patient should call 989/758-3621 or email [email protected].

The PTA program is proud to announce a 95% pass rate on the NPTE for the class of 2015! Additionally, we are proud to report that 8 students and I attended the MPTA Fall Membership Meeting at Oakland University. The students were able to meet students from other PT and PTA schools and discuss current legislation impacting our field. We were also able to attend a continuing education session on the effect of cognitive change on falls in the elderly.

Finally, the second-year students are busy using simulation in our “Rehab 1” labs to learn how to identify lung sounds. We are so grateful for this great learning tool. It certainly is an exciting and busy time of year.

OAKLAND UNIVERSITY Kris Thompson, PT, PhD

This fall is off to a busy start! A number of students and faculty presented at the MPTA Fall Conference at Crystal Mountain. It was a wonderful setting and a great conference. Students and faculty participated in the global Physical Therapy Day of Service (PTDOS) at the MPTA Fall Conference by donating canned items for a local food pantry and by collecting items at OU for a local shelter, the Welcome Inn. Oakland University was also pleased to host an Eastern District meeting in October. The turnout was excellent. There was spirited discussion on legislative issues and Eastern District Chair Dr Jennifer Blackwood gave an informative presentation on cognition and falls. Oakland University is undertaking a search for a new dean for the School of Health Sciences.

The DPT Class of 2015 will be graduating this December. Congratulations to members of the Class of 2015, Kimberly Wilkins, who received one of the MPTA Outstanding Student Awards, and to Lee Simon, who received a Team Rehab scholarship. We are proud of all of the members of the DPT Class of 2015 and wish them the best. We hope to see you at the 2016 MPTA Spring Conference or at the OU PT Program Research Day which will be held 9:00 am Friday, May 13, 2016, in the Human Health Building.

Second-year student Rachel Miceli won a scholarship from Kaiser Permanente to attend CSM!

Other pertinent departmental items include: • Presentations by faculty or students at the Section on Pediatrics Annual Conference, Gerontological Society of America’s Annual Meeting, and the International Spinal Cord Society and American Spinal Injury Association.

• The annual Research Poster Day, of which all students in their final year of the DPT program present their case reports, was held on 12/11.• Dr Min Huang was elected to the MPTA Eastern District Nominating Committee.• Admission for the PhD in Physical Therapy was opened up for therapists who hold a MPT from any CAPTE-accredited school. • The Department’s annual telefund was held in October, as a part of PT month, with 34 student volunteers.• Weekly treatment provided to community members through the pro bono clinic, PT HEART, or through course-related services.• Former Department Director Dr Beverly Schmoll was awarded Dual Emerita status.

WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITYSujay Galen, PT, PhD

Although the clocks have moved backwards, signaling the arrival of holidays, fun, and winter, Wayne State University continues to push on with new opportunities, progress, and achievements. Two of our faculty, Dr Pardo and Dr Galen, have been provided with a unique opportunity to collaborate with NuStep Inc, a Michigan-based rehabilitation technology manufacturer. The collaboration also provides our DPT students an opportunity to work with our industrial partners for their research projects. We already have 2 of our third-year DPT student groups working on projects with NuStep and more future projects are in the pipeline.

In the recently held Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon, a number of our students and faculty participated. Congratulations to all of them. Two of our first-year students, Thomas Windle and Jalen Weaver, along with their relay team, were awarded first place. Alyssa Mira, our third-year DPT student received first place in her age category and has qualified for the Boston Marathon. We are proud of all their achievements!

The summer of 2015 also saw the first weekend “Neuroscience” course conducted here at Wayne State. This course is designed for both clinicians and students and provides 14 contact hours towards continued education credits. The course will be offered again in 2016 due to a high level of interest. Further information can be obtained from Dr Galen ([email protected]).

In closing, we wish our graduating Class of 2015 the very best for their future. We are proud of all their achievements as true warriors!

DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY Sue Klappa, PT, PhD, Paula DeLorm, PT, DPT, CEEAA, COS-C

Greetings from Davenport University (DU)! Excitement is overflowing at Davenport as the developing Doctor of

Physical Therapy program is progressing toward candidacy status. In September, we had a successful Higher Learning Commission (HLC) site visit. This HLC site visit provided DU with an external review of the university and our developing DPT program to determine our readiness to offer doctoral-level education at the university. This first Doctoral program at DU has received wonderful support from DU and in the community. Below are some of our highlights:

In March 2015, Dr Sue Klappa, PT, PhD, joined DU as chair of the DPT program. She has been busy developing curriculum, hiring core faculty, completing a successful visit by the HLC, and preparing to submit the Application for Candidacy (AFC) in June of 2016 to the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). In September 2015, Dr Paula DeLorm, PT, DPT, CEEAA, COS-C, was hired as the director of Clinical Education. Dr DeLorm has a strong history with the Western Michigan community and brings a wealth of knowledge to our program. She has been meeting many CCCEs in the community to expand the College of Health Professions’ affiliation agreements to include the DPT program.

We hope to matriculate our first students in January 2017 who will graduate with a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree and a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Management.
