The most significant literary event of 2005 and 2015 was surely the four-hundred-year anniversary of the publication of Parts I and II of Cervantes’s masterpiece Don Quixote. Ben Okri, a Nigerian author who has won the Booker prize for fiction, once said: "If there is one novel you should read before you die, it is Don Quixote. It has the most wonderful and elaborated story, yet it is simple." The class "A Tour of Don Quixote" will give you the opportunity to take Mr. Okri's advice and read the book that has been translated more times than any other book except the Bible. You will also get some idea why the famous American novelist William Faulkner read the Quixote every year without fail. Our class will be reading Walter Starkie's famous translation in abridged form.
