Second Annual event honours and supports troops and their families

May 7-8, 2009: Commissionaires Ottawa running in partnership with CFB Petawawato raise funds in seven different municipalities between Ottawa and Petawawa

On May 7-8, 2009, about 20 commissionaires and 20 CFB Petawawa military personnel ran – in pairs and sometimesas a group – in relay-style formation for a total of 200 km from Ottawa to Petawawa. To acknowledge gatheredsupporters, donors, veterans and military families along the way, the running convoy made brief stops over the courseof two days at the following assembly points: Parliament Hill, Ottawa (starting point), Kanata, Carp, Kinburn, Arnprior,Renfrew, the Township of McNab/Braeside, the Township of Whitewater Region, Pembroke, and through to the finishline at the Red Friday Welcome Home Troops Rally in Petawawa (finish line).

The purpose of the RUN FOR MILITARY FAMILIES is to raise awareness and funds for the Petawawa Military FamilyResource Centre (PMFRC) – a non-profit agency whose mission is to enrich the lives of individuals and families of themilitary community through positive action, education and support.  Theresa Sabourin, Executive Director of thePMFRC, confirms that funds raised this year were directed towards supporting the Centre’s respite/casual childcareservice which is in very high demand. This is the second time that Commissionaires Ottawa and CFB Petawawa have come together to plan an event thatassists military families. CFB Petawawa is one of Canada's leading Army Bases. It is proud home to 5,100 militarypersonnel, 7,700 family members and 1000 civilian employees. Many commissionaires are former members of theCanadian Forces so together with their brothers and sisters from CFB Petawawa, they share a passion to safeguard ourcountry's freedom and peaceful way of life. Deuxième événement annuel en hommageet en appui aux troupes et à leurs famillesLes 7 et 8 mai 2009 : Commissionnaires Ottawa et la BFC Petawawa courent ensembledans le but d’amasser des fonds dans sept communautés entre Ottawa et Petawawa

Les 7 et 8 mai, environ 20 commissionnaires et 20 militaires de la BFC Petawawa se sont relayés – tantôt à deux, tantôten groupe – à partir d’Ottawa jusqu’à Petawawa. Durant ce relais de 200 km en deux jours, les coureurs ont eu l’occasionde saluer leurs partisans – donateurs, anciens militaires, et familles militaires – lors des courts arrêts aux haltes suivantes :Colline du Parlement, Ottawa (point de départ), Kanata, Carp, Kinburn, Arnprior, Renfrew, Canton de McNab/Braeside,Canton de Whitewater Region, et Pembroke, pour finir à Petawawa lors d’un rassemblement d’accueil « Vendredi enrouge » pour les soldats rapatriés.

L’objectif du RELAIS POUR LES FAMILLES MILITAIRES est de faire de la sensibilisation et d’amasser des fonds àl’appui du Centre de ressources pour les familles des militaires de Petawawa (CRFMP) et de sa mission – enrichir les viesdes membres et des familles de la communauté militaire par des actions positives, éducatives, et solidaires. TheresaSabourin, Directrice générale du CRFMP, a confirmé que les fonds amassés cette année ont été affectés aux services degarde informelle/garde de répit qui sont en très forte demande. Il s’agit pour Commissionnaires Ottawa et la BFC Petawawa d’une deuxième collaboration visant à venir en aide auxfamilles militaires. La BFC Petawawa est l’une des plus importantes bases militaires du Canada. Cette base accueillefièrement 5 100 militaires, 7 700 parents, et 1 000 employés civils. After some stretching exercises, the runners departed from Parliament Hill on their two-day journey to Petawawa.

turned up with bright smiles and flags tocheer on our runners.

For Commissionaires Ottawa, what Military Family Resource Centres do for military families is close to their hearts. Manycommissionaires know from first-hand experience – just like the CFB Petawawa military personnel they ran in partnership with –that a deployed soldier's biggest concern is knowing his or her family is being looked after at home. Events like the RUN FORMILITARY FAMILIES show our military families that they are not forgotten and that we truly appreciate the sacrifices they make.

On 8 May 2009, Commissionaires Ottawa presented a $33,000cheque to the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre at theRed Friday Welcome Home Troops Rally.

Lors du rassemblement d’accueil « Vendredi en rouge » du 8 mai2009, Commissionnaires Ottawa a remis un chèque de 33 000 $ auCentre de ressources pour les familles des militaires.  

Cet événement n’aurait jamais vu le jour sans les efforts inlassables d’une bonne centaine de bénévoles de CommissionnairesOttawa et de la BFC Petawawa. Merci à tous les coureurs, organisateurs, bénévoles, et entreprises commanditaires et partisanesqui se sont consacrés de grand cœur à la réalisation de cet événement. Grâce à l’appui massif des écoles, communautés, médiaset dames des vendredis rouges (notamment Karen Boire et Lisa Miller), la deuxième édition annuelle du RELAIS POUR LESFAMILLES MILITAIRES a connu un niveau de reconnaissance sans précédent.

Commissionnaires Ottawa rattache énormément d’importance à tout ce que font les Centres de ressources pour les famillesmilitaires. Comme leurs partenaires de course de la BFC Petawawa, plusieurs commissionnaires savent d’expérience que, cequi compte le plus pour un militaire en déploiement, c’est le bien-être de sa famille. Un événement comme le RELAIS POURLES FAMILLES MILITAIRES se veut un moyen de montrer aux familles militaires qu’elles n’ont pas été oubliées et quenous apprécions les sacrifices qu’elles font pour nous.
