CONFESSING OUR FAITH from the The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith in Modern EnglishCONSECUTIVE READING Isaiah 51 Hymn: Speak O Lord
The elements of religious worship of God include reading the Scriptures, preaching and hearing the Word of God, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord, as well as the admin-istration of baptism and the Lordʼs supper. They must be performed out of obedience to him, with understanding, faith, reverence, and godly fear. Also, purposeful acts of humbling with fasting and times of thanksgiving should be observed on special occasions in a holy and religious manner.
THE 1689: CHAPTER 22, PARAGRAPH 5
He is like a tree planted by streams of waterthat yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.PSALM 1:3–4a
VERSE OF THE WEEK
THE POWEROF THE CROSS
Oh, to see the dawn…of the darkest day;Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men…torn and beaten, thenNailed to a cross of wood
CHORUSThis, the powr̓ of the cross:
Christ became sin for us;Took the blame, bore the wrath—
We stand forgiven at the crossOh, to see the pain…written on Your face
Bearing the awesome weight of sin.Evr̓y bitter thought…evr̓y evil deedCrowning Your blood stained brow.
Now the daylight flees; now the ground beneathQuakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two,…dead are raised to life;“Finished” the vict r̓y cry.
Oh, to see my name…written in the wounds,For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death;…life is mine to live,Won through Your selfless love.
FINAL CHORUSThis, the powr̓ of the cross
Son of God—slain for us.What a love! What a cost!
We stand forgiven at the cross
SPEAK O LORDSpeak, O Lord, as we come to YouTo receive the food of Your Holy Word.Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,That the light of Christ might be seen todayIn our acts of love and our deeds of faith.Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in usAll Your purposes for Your glory.
Teach us, Lord, full obedience,Holy reverence, true humility;Test our thoughts and our attitudesIn the radiance of Your purity.Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to seeYour majestic love and authority.Words of powr̓ that can never fail—Let their truth prevail over unbelief.
Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for usTruths unchanged from the dawn of timeThat will echo down through eternity. And by grace weʼll stand on Your promises,And by faith weʼll walk as You walk with us.Speak, O Lord, till Your church is builtAnd the earth is filled with Your glory.
