Out of self-doubt, out of agony of the internal debate within myself, out of that conflict

between the urge to be entrepreneurial and the pressure to play it safe, I finally emerged having

decided that I would venture forth.

“- Dr. Habil Khorakiwala

Hailing from Palanpur, Gujarat, we Khorakiwalas arrived in Bombay in the year 1896 to build one of the city's iconic retail chain stores - Akbarallys. Opting to strike out on my own, I entered the pharmaceutical business in 1967. Despite fierce competition at home and abroad, Wockhardt has emerged as a global firm with subsidiaries in the US and Europe. Wockhardt is now ready to launch an antibiotics ‘super drug’ that will mark a new stage in the evolution of the Indian pharmaceutical industry. It was very important for me to document these series of events, so that budding entrepreneurs, policy makers, business executives and students of management can be inspired by my journey and achieve the goals they have set out to accomplish.

Odyssey of Courage recounts four different transformational journeys from the time I started the company and survived in the first 10 to 15 years to become an important national pharmaceutical organisation, after liberalisation established global footprints along with research initiatives and now moving forward to introduce Novel Drug through its Antibiotic Drug Discovery Programme.

While writing the book, I have followed an approach of storytelling, which makes it a compelling read. For practitioners of business and management, there are many unique learnings, which come out of the lifetime experience in my journey with a great degree of ups and downs.

WORD FROM THE FOUNDER

DR.HABIL KHORAKIWALA

“I thought it was a great idea, when Dr. Habil Khorakiwala explained the concept, about extending the Odyssey of Courage into something as compelling as the vision of School of Courage. I became deeply committed for the School of Courage initiative and was tremendously excited for all the participating entrepreneurs. And for such an innovative idea, we, at Accenture left no stone unturned to bringing the best - be it our assets, subject matter experts, or our digital ecosystem.

An important aspect of School of Courage initiative is the fact that it will not be just theoretical download or personalized coaching, but all the participating entrepreneurs will get to work on live projects, and hence, they will be learning-by-doing. They will get an opportunity to self-reflect. Hence, I feel that the concept of learning-by-doing is obviously more invaluable than just getting theoretical inputs.

After reading the Odyssey of Courage, I can say that the learning has been tremendous. I could relate to a lot of the aspects from the book. Two things that stood out for me were the unconventional way of dealing with issues and the extremely bold & risk taking approach of Dr. Habil Khorakiwala. I was also inspired by the way he found the perfect balance in his approach to every situation. The degree of fairness that he brings to every corporate relationship and interactions, I felt is very, very high!

I am sure that the School of Courage, Dr. Habil Khorakiwala and the esteemed set of faculty members will set you on a path of incredible success.”

‘Do not be afraid of making mistakes, but never repeat them’; With these words of paternal advice, Dr. Habil Khorakiwala set forth to create one of India’s most respected, research-based pharmaceutical companies—Wockhardt Limited. In the book, Odyssey of Courage, Dr. Khorakiwala narrates a saga of an Indian enterprise, talent and creativity.

Odyssey of Courage is more than just the story of Wockhardt. It offers invaluable insights into the making of a knowledge-based Indian multinational. Policymakers, business executives and management students will relate to Dr. Khorakiwala’s experiences in ‘learning-by-doing’, taking risks and handling crises and in managing change — within the industry, within India’s policy environment and within the world of global pharma.

FROM ODYSSEY OF COURAGETO SCHOOL OF COURAGE

Dr. Khorakiwala was fortunate enough to be mentored by several stalwarts in his life. At every key inflection point learning came from some quarter, which only enabled him to be prepared for the next leg in his journey. The book, which began as a small gesture of giving back, will continue its journey through ‘The School of Courage’ – a unique initiative to help entrepreneurs take their journey to the next level. All tenets from the Odyssey of Courage, which in a way signify ‘The Wockhardt Way’ have been transformed into structured program in partnership with Accenture. Dr. Khorakiwala has roped in industry stalwarts whose knowledge and experience will indeed offer giant shoulders for entrepreneurs to stand on. A lucky few will make it through to the first batch of ‘The School of Courage’ and this unique Executive Entrepreneurship Program a platform for all entrepreneurs to look forward to.
