Why does createx colors manufacture so many

different types of airbrush paint?

We specialize in catering to the wide spectrum of

demands that custom & graphic arts require. From

the exacting precision of our Createx Illustration Colors

to Createx Airbrush Colors’ coverage and soft-hand

feel on fabrics, we offer performance and value for

everyone, hobbyist and professional alike.

Which createx colors airbrush paint is best for

someone learning to airbrush?

Wicked Colors is the paint we recommend. This paint

flows smoothly and sprays lines with control easily at

25–30 psi with a 0.3mm or larger tip-sized airbrush;

included in most airbrush starter sets. Createx Airbrush

Colors are best applied at higher psi settings 35–50

psi. Wicked Colors also offer incredible performance

& value; when reduced properly, they spray nearly

as well as our more expensive Createx Illustration

Colors. Wicked Colors are also multi-surface, meaning

they work well on a wide variety of surfaces and

applications including textile, RC & model, automotive,

fine art and more.

Why does createx offer multiple reducers and

additives instead of pre-reduced paint?

We appreciate that no two artists paint the same

and the need for subjective preferences, especially

when reducing paint. For example, Dru Blair

(schoolofrealism.com) developed Createx Illustration

Colors with a 0.18mm tip-sized airbrush operated at

~15 psi without reduction. Most artists spraying at

such settings would generously reduce more than

50% per volume; both are suitable reduction methods.

We also make our “transparent colors” (i.e. an opacifier

is not added for coverage) with as high a pigment

load as possible for coverage out-of-the-bottle and

enough resin for adhesion and durability even when

over-reduced to achieve a low viscosity airbrush paint.

Versatility is a hallmark of quality airbrush paint; pre-

reduced paint limits application and technique.

What types of clears, primers and paints are createx colors compatible with?

Createx Colors are universally compatible with all other paint systems and clears. Createx Colors are non-reactive, eliminating the potential of an adverse, chemical reaction when inter-coated with other material types. Always allow the other material type to cure prior to applying the Createx Colors paint (when painting over plastics, start with AutoBorne Sealer). When painting over other paint types, prepare by scuffing with 600–800 grit prior to paint. Createx Colors may be top-coated with any clear type including urethane, lacquer, enamel, polyester, water-based and more. Always allow Createx Colors to thoroughly cure prior to applying the top-coat clear.

How durable and lightfast are createx colors?

Createx Colors paints are made with lightfast pigments sourced through quality sources such as EMD Performance Materials™ (Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany). We make a wide variety of resins (the binder), several of which are intended for exterior applications and will withstand direct, prolonged exposure to outdoor elements. Wicked Colors and Auto Air Colors offer performance that not only matches but has begun to surpass that of traditional solvent-based coatings. Water-based technology continues to evolve whereas solvent-based technology is modifying its chemical make-up in an attempt to retain performance as air quality regulations change. With new technologies such as 4030 Balancing Clear, a water-soluble urethane additive, and AutoBorne Sealer, a water-based epoxy-like resin with tenacious adhesion to all substrates including plastics, Createx Colors is making some of the best performing custom paint on the planet.

What is the best way to ensure a successful paint job?

For painters new to Createx Colors, please refer to our Application and Reduction Guides on our website’s technical pages. Although the information on the label is accurate, it is limited and may be missing helpful updates. We can’t stress enough the importance of a test panel anytime trying a new paint or application technique. If the test panel does not come out as expected, call or email us. Createx Colors has excellent technical support.
