Metanoia Philip L. Roberts

Metanoia was composed for the Metanoia Handbell Choir at the Fluvanna Correctional Center of Women near Charlottesville, Virginia. “Metanoia” comes from the Greek New Testament and means to change, repent, and to be transformed. The first section, Change, is a derivative of change ringing technique which requires discipline, patience, and confidence. The second theme, Repentance, represents regret and our desires for perfection. The third section, Transformation, incorporates both sections as genuine change and true repentance will ultimately lead to transformation. Metanoia was inspired by Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect.” The River arr. Anna Laura Page

The River is a flowing and harmonically rich setting of the hymn, “Shall We Gather at The River” and the spiritual, “Peace Like A River.” Each tune occurs separately in the piece then simultaneously together. Anna Laura Page is an active composer, clinician, and organ recitalist. Page has a bachelor’s degree in vocal music education and a masters in music theory from the University of Kentucky. The River utilizes auditory painting within the music to represent peaceful water features in nature. The River reminds us to find peace amongst the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ave Maria Tomás Luis de Victoria (ca. 1548-1611)

Victoria was a celebrated Renaissance composer and priest from Spain who wrote only sacred music. He is known for beautifully refined imitative writing in his masses and motets that were almost all published during his lifetime.

Soon-Ah Will Be Done arr. William Dawson (1899-1990)

William L. Dawson conducted band and choir during his tenure as a professor and administrator at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Soon-Ah Will be Done is typical of his compositional style with syncopation and tonal harmonies that create an energetic and hopeful spiritual arrangement.

This Macedonia, folk song tells the story of a young person talking with their mother about how nice it would be to live and own a store in the countryside and watching the townspeople go by.

“The Pasture” from Frostiana Randall Thompson (1899-1994)

The Pasture is from Randall Thompson’s Frostiana, a set of seven songs set to pastoral poems by Robert Frost. The work was composed in 1959 for the 200th anniversary of the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts.

Love Potion #9 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, arr. Mac Huff

Love Potion #9, written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1959, hit the top of the US charts performed by The Searchers. In this arrangement, Mac Huff successfully captured all of the early rock & roll excitement of the original.

Andrea Ramsey’s setting of the Margaret Walker text leaps off the musical page as words crying to be sung. “My grandmothers were strong. They followed plows and bent to toil.” This was not frailty - this was determined womanhood and describes the strength of a speaker’s enslaved female ancestors and how they suffered for that strength.

And Ain’t I A Woman! Susan Borwick

Susan Borwick is a composer, musicologist, music theorist, teacher, and ordained minister who graduated magna cum laude from Baylor University with degrees in music theory and composition. The song “Ain’t I a Woman” is originally a poem written by Sojourner Truth in 1851. Sojourner was born with the name Isabella Baumfree and was a slave in New York. After gaining her freedom in 1827, she became an abolitionist & women’s rights activist.

From Dusk to Dawn Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947)

From Dusk to Dawn tells the story of the Liberian women protesting the second civil war which engulfed the country between 1999 and 2003. Led by Leymah Gbowee (Winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize), the women prayed, marched, sang and resolutely waited for peace. Their “uniforms” were white T-shirts. At times, the women doubted their strength, but, with hands joined together, they became peace mothers. Ultimately, they proclaimed, “Mighty be our powers!”

Still I Rise Words and Music by Rosephanye Powell (b.1962)

Still I Rise was inspired by the poem of the same name by poet laureate Maya Angelou. It is a women’s anthem, saluting the strength of women to persevere through life’s difficulties–low self-esteem, physical and emotional abuse, rape, incest, prejudice, and abandonment. Even though a woman’s life may be filled with tears and heartaches, each day that she finds herself still living, she discovers that she has grown stronger and risen a little higher because her circumstances have not overcome her. Thus, every new day can be one of hope and joy because regardless of the past, today, “still I rise”!

DR. RYAN W. HOLDER is currently in his 15th year as the Associate Director of Choral Studies at NAU, where he directs the Women’s Chorale and High Altitude vocal jazz ensemble, and teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, choral arranging, and serves as the adviser for the NAU Student Chapter of ACDA. Dr. Holder has given lectures and presentations at local, state, and regional ACDA and NAfME conventions, including a session on “Male Choir Directors:

Working with and Relating to Beginning Women’s Choirs” at the 2009 ACDA National Convention. His vocal jazz ensembles have performed at state and regional ACDA conferences, and was one of only three vocal jazz ensembles selected to perform at the 2012 Jazz Educators Network Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Ryan is currently Past-President of AzACDA and was recently awarded Arizona Choir Director of the Year. He is Director of Music at The Church of the Red Rocks in Sedona, and is the founding artistic director of the Sedona Academy of Chamber Singers.

Faculty Conductor

SARAH IRVIN is in her second year of graduate studies at Northern Arizona University in pursuit of a master of music degree in choral conducting where she conducts the University Singers. Originally from Carson City, Nevada, Sarah received her bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2016. After graduation, she taught elementary music and middle school choir in Reno. Sarah directed youth choirs with Sierra Nevada Children’s Choir and has directed the

Junior Boys Choir at Sierra Mountain Music Camp for the past three years. Sarah has performed roles with Nevada Chamber Opera in productions such as The Medium, Le Nozze di Figaro, Suor Angelica, and Iolanthe. Before moving to Flagstaff, she was an active choir member and featured soloist with the Nevada Chamber Singers, University Symphonic Choir, Reno Baroque Ensemble, Nevada Concert Winds, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Toccata Tahoe Symphony Orchestra.

JASON DRAHOS is a first-year graduate student at Northern Arizona University pursuing a master of music degree in choral conducting. An Iowa native, he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from Luther College in Decorah, IA. After graduating, Jason taught music for several years in the international school circuit, conducting school and community choirs of various ages. He was a founding member and conductor of the Muscat Chamber Singers in Muscat, Oman, and has

performed and conducted with the Moscow Oratorio Society in Russia. Currently, Jason conducts the NAU Men’s Chorale and serves as Music Director for the Master Chorale of Flagstaff and Arizona Mountain Chorale.

ANNE ANDERSON is a senior undergraduate choral music education major at Northern Arizona University. Originally from Apache Junction, Arizona, Anne began ringing handbells in middle school under the direction of international esteemed bellmaster and NAU alumnus, Doug Benton. This is her first year as bellmaster with the handbell choir at NAU and she is extremely excited for the opportunity to work with the ensemble and contribute to its rich history. In her time at

NAU, Anne has participated in multiple ensembles including the Women’s Chorale, University Singers, NAU Chamber Singers, Harter M. Memorial Handbell Choir, and the internationally acclaimed Shrine of the Ages choir. In addition to serving as bellmaster, Anne is president of Jacks on Broadway, president of the Delta Eta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, and secretary for the NAU American Choral Directors Association Student Chapter.
