My name is Joseph Tran Xuan Lam. I am a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Toronto, Canada. I was ordained to the priesthood to the Archdiocese of Saigon, South Vietnam in 1974, just one year prior to the fall of Saigon into the power of North Vietnam-ese Communism. I ministered to people in poor areas and the work was hard, just as hard as when I had worked on a farm. At the same time, I was a parochial vicar of the parish. There was a time that I had to move deep into a rural area to say Mass for peo-ple. However, I was captured by local police and put in jail for six months, because the com-munist regime did not allow free-dom of religion. In 1987, I joined a group of people, and together we escaped Vietnam by boat, travelling through rivers toward Cambodia, and then ultimately reached the Refugee Camps in Thailand. In 1991, the Canadian government sponsored me. Since then, I was incardinated to the Archdiocese of Toronto and served for 23 years until I retired in 2016.

Tôi thụ phong linh mục năm 1974 tại Sài Gòn, Việt Nam, một năm trước ngày Sài Gòn thất thủ vào tay cộng sản Bắc Việt. Tôi trải qua một cuộc sống cơ cực nghèo khó, vừa làm cha phó vừa làm ruộng để mưu sinh. Một thời gian tôi đi vào vùng sâu vùng xa để làm lễ thì bị cộng sản bắt giữ và giam tù sáu tháng, vì cộng sản không thích và không cho phép tự do hoạt động tôn giáo. Đến năm 1987 tôi cùng đoàn người đi trốn vuợt biên bằng thuyền qua ngã Campuchia và đã lên bờ tại trại tỵ nạn Thái Lan. Đến năm 1991 chính phủ Canada cho tôi được tái định cư tại Canada và tôi đã phục vụ tại Tổng giáo phận To-ronto 23 năm cho đến 2016 tôi được về hưu. Tôi được cha sứ G.B. Parish Guideline: With good intention to welcome others to worship and pray with our Church, we ask the invited person, with your free will, be registered in our Parish for at least three (3) months in order to schedule for the Sacrament of Matrimony or Baptism. The Archbishop, Cardinal Collins of Toronto, granted my re-quest to move to the Archdiocese of Detroit. Archbishop Allen Vigneron accepted and welcomed me to stay in residence at Our Lady of Grace with Fr. Hoang. I will serve as a volunteer associ-ate to assist the parish. I am residing at the rectory with Fr. Hoang and have already felt many blessings, as if I were at home in Toronto. Fr. Hoang and everyone I have met have welcomed me very warmly. I am very happy to be here. Please keep me in your prayers, so that I can remain good health and be blessed by the grace of God so I can contribute my minis-try to help Fr. Hoang and all parishioners at Our Lady of Grace.

Spring Cleaning

As a follow up to the March 4th bulletin article, we are moving ever closer to our goal of re-organizing the garages at the east end of the parish property. The garages have been the “dumping ground” for many unused items around the facilities. Just as we do at our own homes, most of the “old” stuff, or even things that we use seasonally, get relegated to the garage. It is time to clean it up and either sell what is saleable, or simply discard the rest. As you know, the parish has purchased snow removal equipment and other maintenance items. We now have need for the garage to house the equipment. Initially, we are asking each organization or committee to take inventory of items that are stored in the garages and determine what is salvageable and what can be sold or discarded.

We are asking that each responsible group complete this inspection by April 29th. It gives everyone ample oppor tunity to comply. To arrange an inspection, please contact the parish office or contact Ken Kronner at 586 751-4243 to schedule an appoint-ment. In addition, an “open house” inspection will be scheduled for Saturday, April 29th, from 10am to 3pm. The final goal is to have a parish “Garage Sale” on Saturday, May 5th. The garage sale will serve two purposes; raise some money for the parish, and allow us to dispose of unwanted and unused items that are cluttering up the space that we desperately need. Knights’ News

The Knights of Columbus wish to thank the parish for a very successful Spring “Tootsie Roll” Drive on Palm Sunday, March 29th. The event raised $932.07.The Knights annually do a one day, or one weekend collection to benefit the men-tally impaired in our local community. The annual Tootsie Roll drive has fast become as popular as the Girls Scouts cookie sale. Across the city and state, local Councils fan out in their local communities for this event. A meeting is scheduled for April 29th after the noon Mass to determine which local charity, or the Special Olympics, is to receive these funds. The results of the meeting will be reported to the parish.

Words on the Word

April 15, 2018 – Our Heavenly Advocate

Sin happens in many households: Selfishness; neglect of elders; argu-

menta"ve siblings or spouses. Sin happens in many communi"es: Mar-

ginaliza"on of the poor; gossip; murder; envy; road rage.

And sin happens across the country and around the world: War; na-

"onal bigotry; abor"on; religious persecu"on.

The lists, of course, could go on and on, with some sins being more

profound than others.

But the point is, from our closest interac"ons to those most distant, sin

is a real and unfortunate part of our lives and the lives of everyone

else. People of goodwill do their best to guard against it – they resolve

to avoid it and to make amends when the commit it – but it never

seems to go away completely.

And that’s one of the reasons that today’s second reading from the

first le#er of St. John is so reassuring:

“My children, I am wri"ng this to you so that you may not commit sin,”

the passage begins. “But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with

the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expia"on for our sins,

and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we

may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments.”

And then, of course, try as we may, we will s"ll likely fall short in some

way. And, to ensure that we don’t miss the good news, we hear it di-

rectly from Jesus in today’s gospel from St. Mark.

“Thus it is wri#en that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead

on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,

would be preached in his name to all the na"ons, beginning from Jeru-

salem.”

The key ac"on on our part: Repentance.

Amen and alleluia.

Vào tháng 11 năm ngoái, sở cảnh sát của thành phố Warren đã mời các thành viên đại diện của các giáo xứ và những tôn giáo khác đến họp để thảo luận về những mối đe dọa và những vụ xát hại tính mạng con người.

Cuộc họp đã được hướng dẫn kỹ lưỡng và đã được mọi người tán thành. Cuộc thảm sát gần đây tại trường học ở tiểu bang Florida đã nhắc nhở lại cho tất cả chúng ta một nỗi đau vô tận, bởi thế tất cả mọi người cần phải cảnh giác và thận trọng vì Nhà thờ có thể dễ trở thành mục tiêu bắn giết.

Qua kết quả của phiên họp, sở cảnh sát của Thành Phố Warren đã kêu gọi mọi người trong Cộng đoàn chúng ta nên thận trọng để ngăn ngừa những mối đe doạ đã nêu trên.

Hạ sĩ Jodi Walny từ sở cảnh sát của Thành Phố Warren sẽ đến họp với Giáo Xứ Chúng ta vào ngày 11 tháng 5 năm 2018, lúc 10 sáng, để hướng dẫn cách thức đề phòng an ninh và bảo vệ Giáo xứ an toàn. Xin mời tất cả Quý vị ÔBACE đến tham dự đông đủ. Sẽ có thức ăn nhẹ sau buổi họp này.

Warren Police Department Presentation

In November, 2017, the City of Warren Police Department invited Church leaders and other organiza-tions for a discussion of possible alternatives to an “active shooter or threat.” That meeting was instruc-tive and met with wide acceptance. The recent school shootings in Florida is a painful reminder that all of us need to be as vigilant as possible, since the Church is a “soft target.”

As a result, the Warren Police have encouraged individual churches to be proactive within their con-gregations to this possible threat. On Friday, May 11th at 10:00 am in Church, Corporal Jodi Walny of the Warren Police Dept., will conduct an informative session for Our Lady of Grace. Everyone who can is encouraged to attend this meeting. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the meeting. Fr. Hoang

A big thanks to Burnie and Barb Hunt for undertaking the cleaning of all the chair covers and table cloths from the March 24th event held in the Social Hall.

Last year, the parish purchased 300 white chair covers and 50 table cloths for use in the Social Hall for parish functions and for Hall rentals. The chair covers and cloths make a very professional and polished appearance. These new additions enhance the appeal for potential rentals. Consider using our Social Hall for your next family or social event.

T u e s d a y , M a r c h 2 7 The Eucharistic Prayer in Conclusion

As the Eucharistic Prayer nears its conclusion, the priest makes various intersessions. First he prays for all who will soon be nourished by the body and blood of Christ. The priest prays that “they may become one body, one spirit in Christ” – an echo of the words of St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:17: “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” The priest also prays that our participation in Christ’s sacrifice might make us “an eternal offering to you” or “a living sacrifice” echoing St. Paul’s exhorta-tion to the Romans: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spir-itual worship.”

Second, the priest prays for the Church universal, naming the pope and the local bishop and then interceding for all bishops, clergy, and the entire people of God, both the living and the dead. Some intercessions include a universal scope, interceding for “all who seek you with a sincere heart” and praying that the sacrifice of the Mass “advance the peace and salvation of all the world.”

The Eucharistic Prayer culminates with an expression of praise that was used in the Mass as early as the sec-ond century. And the people respond with what is commonly known as “the great Amen.” “Amen” translit-erates a Hebrew word that affirms the validity of what has been said and was often used in liturgical settings. For example, when the Levites sang, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting,”

the people joined in this blessing of God by exclaiming, “Amen!” When Ezra read the book of the law in a sol-emn ceremony, he concluded by blessing the Lord, and the people answered, “Amen, Amen”. St. Paul used this word in similar ways and even concluded some of his letters with an “Amen.”

Most notable is how the angels and saints in heaven cry out “Amen” as they sing their part in the chorus prais-ing God in the heavenly liturgy. In the book of Revelation, every living creature in heaven and earth and under the earth says, “To him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” And in response, the angelic creatures say “Amen!” as if to shout out, “Yes! May the Lord be blessed and honored forever!” In another scene, the angels fall down in worship before God’s throne, say-ing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.”

The praise of the angels and saints in heaven is echoed on earth by the pries at every Mass when he says, “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.”

These words have roots in scripture. They come in part from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans: “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever. Amen.” St. Paul also refers to “the unity of the Spirit”. Here the liturgy expresses the Trinitarian nature of our worship in the Mass. We praise the al-mighty Father best by offering our lives through, with, and in the Son who surrendered Himself completely on Calvary and in the unity of his Spirit who abides in us.

After hearing the priest acclaim that all honor and glory is God’s for ever and ever, we respond like the angels, eager to join in this praise of God. We cry out “Amen!” And this is no ordinary “Amen.” In it, we join all the great heroes in salvation history – The Levites, Ezra, St. Paul, and all the angels and saints in heaven – in this chorus of unending praise. St. Jerome said that this Amen in the Mass of the early Christians in Rome “resounded in heaven, as a celestial thunderclap.”

With this we conclude the study of the Eucharistic Prayer. Next week we’ll move on to the Communion Rite, which includes the Lord’s Prayer, the Rite of Peace and other preparatory rites. He is Risen! Risen Indeed!
