CONSTRUCTION AT SACRED HEART Over the summer and continuing into September our boiler is being replaced Contractors will normally arrive late in the school day (around 230) and continue during after school hours They are working in an area not used by teaching staff or students Their work is limited to the upper area next to the gym on the parking lot side of the building The safety of everyone in the building will be monitored while the work is being completed SAFETY

In the past during recess and lunch we have used the exit near the bus loop for students to use For safety reasons we will only use this exit for bus students dismissal at the end of the day During the school day students will use the two school yard exits only for recess and lunch

DRESS CODE The Appropriate Dress Code consists of any combination of white and navy blue garments (eg plain white top navy blue bottom or navy blue top and bottom no denim no logos) There is no restriction as to where clothing for school may be purchased

It is imperative that addresses and phone numbers be kept up to date at school Please check and return the attached Studentrsquos Information Form for your child In the event of an accident or illness it may be necessary to contact parents Any changes must therefore be relayed to the school as soon as any one or more of these occur change of home address telephone numbers email andor emergency contact SAFETY FIRST

CELL PHONEELECTRONIC DEVICES Cell phones and electronic devices should not be visible at any time at school Students are not permitted to use a cell phone to make calls take pictures text or play games at any time If a student displays or uses a

cell phone or electronic device it will be withheld and parents may be called to pick up the cell phone or device IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE

Parents are discouraged from using the loop in front of the school as a ldquoKiss amp Driverdquo drop off for students Parking is not permitted in the bus loop as we have two large buses that need clear access Students can also be dropped off on Hupfield Trail or on any of the side streets just east or west of the building where they have clear access into the yard without going through the parking lot or bus loop

SAFE SCHOOL POLICY

The safety of our children in school is a matter of utmost importance to staff and parents In order to ensure that our children are in the safest possible learning environment we ask that all families adhere to our

procedures for entry and dismissal

Entry Procedure

1 All entry points are locked before during and after the

instructional day All visitors to the school are required to

enter and exit using the front door only

2 All visitors who enter the school must report directly to the

office Visitors are not permitted to go directly to the

classrooms or to be in the corridors

3 Children who arrive late for school have to enter using the

front door and report to the office as all entry points will

be locked

4 When it is necessary for a child to leave the school early

(dental appointments pick up due to illness etc) parents

are asked to enter the building through the front door

report directly to the office and see the school secretary in

order to sign your child out The secretary will buzz the

classroom and your child will meet you in the main office

Lunch and Recess

5 Parents dropping off lunches may

leave the lunch at the main office

Please enter the school using the

front door and report directly to

the office Please be sure to print

your childrsquos name on hisher

lunch and your child will be able to retrieve hisher lunch

when the bell rings at 1145 AM

Kindergarten Exit Procedure

6 Kindergarten children will be

dismissed from the kindergarten

yard Parents and babysitters who

are picking up children at the end of

the day are asked to wait in the

kindergarten yard This will be the

only point of dismissal for our

kindergarten students All staff will be stationed at the exit

door All other entry doors into the kindergarten room will

be locked For your comfort parents are asked to arrive at

dismissal time not before so that you do not have to wait

for an extended period of time in the playground Bus

children will be escorted to the bus as usual

Exit Procedure for Grades 1 to 8

7 Each class is assigned an entryexit door This is the

same door the children use every time they enter or

leave the school at a bell At the end of the day

children will be dismissed and will exit the building

using their assigned exit door

8 Parents and babysitters who are picking up children at

the end of the day are asked to wait for your child

outside his or her assigned exit door For your comfort

and convenience parents are asked to arrive at

dismissal time not before so that you do not have to

wait for an extended time in the playground

INTERNET AGREEMENT (ATTACHED) The use of the internet can be an instrumental part of learning TCDSB requires parental permission for students to have access to internet Student access will be based on parental approval and appropriate supervision Please sign the appropriate form and return to your

childrsquos teacher Please read the detailed policy at httpwwwtcdsborgboardpoliciesaup

STUDENT INSURANCE FORMS (ATTACHED) While every precaution is taken to provide a safe supervised environment during the school day accidents do happen from time to time Thankfully most accidents are minor but occasionally there are more serious accidents particularly with students active in athletics The cost for these various plans is minimal and you may save a great deal of money in the long term If you decide to take one of these policy plans simply complete the attached application form and send it along with your cheque directly to the insurance company

MEDICALALLERGY ALERT

We have students in our school with severe life threatening food allergies (anaphylaxis) to peanuts nut products and other food items Although this may or may not affect your childrsquos class directly it is important students bring snacks and lunches which are peanut and nut free and that snacks be consumed in appropriate areas We encourage families to consider alternatives to classroom treats ndash stickers pencils etc Any food items brought to classes must have teacher approval and be pre-arranged

LUNCH PERMISSION FORM (ATTACHED)

To accommodate the demands of our families students have the option of staying or going home for lunch If a student chooses to go out to lunch on special days they must be signed out by their parent or guardian only Please complete the attached form indicating

whether or not your child will be staying for lunch each day

Lunches dropped off must be labeled with your childrsquos name and left on the table outside the main office area before 1130 AM Please refrain from sending fast food items as they do not comply with the Healthy Food Policy

STAYING GREEN ndash E-MAIL ADDRESSES NEEDED

To protect our environment and reduce school costs we will be moving towards emailing regularly scheduled communications like the monthly calendar newsletter to parents For now you will receive school communications on paper brought home by your children In the near future we will collect e-mail addresses and begin to communicate the school calendar through your email address

IMMUNIZATION

Please check with your local health care provider or local public health unit to make sure your child has all the vaccines needed to attend school If your child has followed the immunization schedule no further vaccines will be needed Students who do not have up-to-date immunization records on file at their local public health unit may be suspended from school until records are provided

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM

To ensure the safe arrival of all students to and from school the following procedure should be followed You are reminded to call the school before 830 AM and leave a detailed message on the school answering machine (416-393-5415) if your child is going to be absent for any reason The safe arrival of all students is obviously very important to everyone Parents and school officials share this responsibility Thank you for your continued assistance in reporting absences Please be reminded also that a note to the teacher giving a reason for a childs absence is advisable after hisher return to school

Please note

Children are not permitted to use the school phone

except for an emergency

Classes will not be interrupted during instructional time

Students not staying at school for lunch must have a

signed and dated note from the parentguardian if the

child is to leave school for lunch or for an appointment

Children are not permitted to go to the Malvern Mall

unless accompanied by a parent or guardian

Punctuality is extremely important to ensure your child

maximizes hisher learning experience School begins at

900 AM and dismissal is 330 PM Close records will be

kept for late arrivals and parents shall be informed if a

problem ensues

BUS SCHEDULES FOR SEPTEMBER The regular bus schedule takes effect immediately however there may be some delays during the initial weeks We ask for your patience as routes may be modified For those families who have applied for exceptional circumstance busing for this academic year please keep in mind that an application for busing does not entitle one to receive busing You will be contacted directly from the bus company as to the start date Consistent attendance is expected For the convenience of students outgoing large bus routes are colour coded yellow and green SECONDARY SCHOOL OPEN HOUSES All Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary schools welcome grade 8 students and their families to open houses

each fall This is an opportunity to meet some of the staff check out school facilities and learn more about the various programs services and activities as you prepare for Catholic secondary school

STUDENT INSURANCE FORMS (ATTACHED) While every precaution is taken to provide a safe supervised environment during the school day accidents do happen from time to time Thankfully most accidents are minor but occasionally there are more serious accidents particularly with students active in athletics The cost for these various plans is minimal and you may save a great deal of money in the long term If you decide to take one of these policy plans simply complete the attached application form and send it along with your cheque directly to the insurance company

MEDICALALLERGY ALERT

We have students in our school with severe life threatening food allergies (anaphylaxis) to peanuts nut products and other food items Although this may or may not affect your childrsquos class directly it is important students bring snacks and lunches which are peanut and nut free and that snacks be consumed in appropriate areas We encourage families to consider alternatives to classroom treats ndash stickers pencils etc Any food items brought to classes must have teacher approval and be pre-arranged

LUNCH PERMISSION FORM (ATTACHED)

To accommodate the demands of our families students have the option of staying or going home for lunch If a student chooses to go out to lunch on special days they must be signed out by their parent or guardian only Please complete the attached form indicating

whether or not your child will be staying for lunch each day

Lunches dropped off must be labeled with your childrsquos name and left on the table outside the main office area before 1130 AM Please refrain from sending fast food items as they do not comply with the Healthy Food Policy

STAYING GREEN ndash E-MAIL ADDRESSES NEEDED

To protect our environment and reduce school costs we will be moving towards emailing regularly scheduled communications like the monthly calendar newsletter to parents For now you will receive school communications on paper brought home by your children In the near future we will collect e-mail addresses and begin to communicate the school calendar through your email address

IMMUNIZATION

Please check with your local health care provider or local public health unit to make sure your child has all the vaccines needed to attend school If your child has followed the immunization schedule no further vaccines will be needed Students who do not have up-to-date immunization records on file at their local public health unit may be suspended from school until records are provided

To protect our environment and reduce school costs we will be moving towards emailing regularly scheduled communications like the monthly calendar newsletter to parents For now you will receive school communications on paper brought home by your children In the near future we will collect e-mail addresses and begin to communicate the school calendar through your email address
