for anyone, and touch better and more strengthening for both body and soul than a London L ord M ayor’s feast w hich costs in this civilised and Christian (?) country some £20,000, I believe, if not more. B ut supposing, as is lifebly to be true, as he was a rem ark able mediumistic ascetic, tha t his food was wonder fully little, this is an instance o fth eH B H or the higher nature controlling the lower bodily nature.

His body was large, strong and healthy, and he was remarkable for being able to do much more work than those who ate more.

W hen th irty years old he married Dorothea W issling by whom he had ten H n K e n , 5 sons and 5; daughters! H is usual habit, even after marriage, was to get up a t m idnight, and walk, a t all seasons, to B e * Q h u rc h a t Kerns, an hour’s distance, in to pray. D uringthis part of his life he did not neglect his earthly duties for religious ascetic practices, but semre<Un seyeral wars as a soldier, or militia man.

However, a time came when the sp iritg(of w hatever kind may have been) was tgjftg strong for^mm,, and forced him to abandon all secular^dife^*and become an Anchoret, living alone in a desert place, and devoting him self altogether to the inner m ystical, ascetic life. B u t to his credit he did not carry this out until f f lh a d procured, w ith g reat difficulty* and after g reat delay, the consent o f his')wife and family, who were a t th a t tim e well able to support;themselves.

In this, he unconsciously followed the practice of the Hindu ascetics, who generally d id no t fly from their* secular duties as househo lde^ jjM l^ the approagl^ a j^ l jO age, when those duties m igh t be supposed tpfbe ended,

■and the soul ju s tly allowed to carry out in its own way its desires and aspirations for the h igher spiritual inner life.

W e now come to the alledged fact in his a fte r life, which is im portant to our present ^ fc u iry -^ th e power of th e soul over th e body ip reference to food. K is positively asserted by .tradition, th a t for the lastjtw eiityv years of his life b ra k ^ e r took any foocbor drink w iH [ ever, except w hat he took when receiving R ew rite of the holy sacram en t; th a t would be a very m in iH q u a n - ti ty o f flour made into a wafer, and w ithout w inejR^oraM ing to the Catholic r i tfc . T here is a considerable am ount of evidence of th e tru th of this story, although, taken altogether, the evidence is scarcely sufficient, as it seems to me a t least, to satisfy the critical m ind ac­customed to w eigh evidence.

H e was however w atch ed /fo r a m onth by certain persons appointed by the JM u rcb auth&ri™ErloR g^3 the tru th of the story, and they reported ' in favour of its tru th . On one occasion he was ordered by the Bishop o f Constance to eat a morsel of bread obeyed, b u t ex­perienced great difficulty and suffered m uch in swallow­in g it. T he same effect was produced on M iss Fancher, in A m erica, w hen she tried to take food, and this rem arkable case gives a certain air o f pp§M M itjO° ^he whole story. H is own affirmation of the fact, a lsd o sof* g rea t im portance, for he undoubtedly was in a ll other respects a m ost estim able man, and one whose whole life renders his habitually p ractising and affirming a lie very unlikely. However, i f i t be a fact, as some alledge, th a t some m edium istic powers seem often united w ith a love o f trickery, and to be connected w ith bad health of both body and mind, who can te ll th a t he also, being undoubtedly a strong medium, m ay have been con­sciously or perhaps unconsciously led in to exaggeration : th e good of th e Rom an C hurch was held to ju s tify alm ost any means. One fac t w ould ra th e r lead to the conclusion th a t there was some trickery or exaggeration is th a t there was a report in th e country th a t he ate ro o ts ; and as he lived m a desert place beside a fo re jt?

A meritorious and enjoyable act was suddenly transformed into a disgraceful crime.

Now, is not this sort of th ing taking place continually in the course of our lives ? The act of visiting A untie, and many other acts, are good in themselves, bu t w hen associated w ith other circumstances they may become suddenly and mysteriously bad. In these relations we may recognise the continuous antagonism th a t rages between the senses and the spirit, or w hat are called the Relative and the A bsolute^-the hum an and the Divine. .

In such a work as tha t of Spiritualism — in all departm ents— these distinctions m ust be borne, in m ind continually. W e are, indeed? mere' children in spiritual knowledge', w ith stupendous lessons before us, of w hich we have not y e t begun to m aster even the m erest rudim ents. E very step we take is likely to be one of error, in whole or in part, especially w hen iH s^one tha t elates us w ith exu ltan t pleasure, and calls forth th rilling congratulations from the domain o f the senses and of passion* W e are more likely to be m aking progress in the rig h t direction when-r the p a th is somewhat rough, and the way is barred by, apparently, insurm ountable obs­tructions. There is 'no royal road to*f&pfritual advantages, any more than there is to riches of learning. U nceasing painstaking effort, not unm ixed w ith reverses and disappointm ent, 9 ® th e only means of genuine success in any field of action, sp iritual or m aterial. The tru e path m ust in all cases be taken, otherwise failure and disaster, by w hich we are forced jto revise our methods and s ta rt afresh again, are t th ingsunder the circumstances th a t could h a p p e n ^ # j us. - v -/ The present supposed prostrated condition of* th e Spiritual M ovement is the very best th ing th a t could have taken place—better far th an a “ roaring trade ” in lectures, seances and sub­scriptions on th e old basis. the interest of readers and of the subject, to expose the folly and the vanity of some of these eager, conceited peo­ple, who have sat in judgment upon matters upon which they are not qualified to pronounce opinion. Nature, ad­ducing against them their own writing as witness, has not accorded this gift to them.

Old-fashioned magic, by which we mean real magic, has gone long ago. It was a lost case with it when Addison began to write his Spectator. The man was far too sensible. Was that tranquil, philosophical mind to be disturbed by magic ? Certainly not- Sentimental common-sense, con|| siderable elegance, combined with an expatiating feeble hum­our was his line. Miracle has gone. Consequently the true springs of the Christian Religion—which is miracle all over, or nothing—have gone with it. It is a pity on many ac­counts. For have we gained in its dismissal-?., We think not. The “ Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge,” the “ Penny Magazine,” the “ Saturday Magazine,” that “ Schoolmaster ” who has always been V abroad.” and has never yet been “ at home,” the Chief Reviews in their brag­ging, audacious ways,.Church Charges in their elaborate, c.ut-and-dry naturalness, the talkativeness of innumerable busy Church defenders, the smoothing-out of the wrinkles in the ploughed heart of the people by the comfortable warm flat iron of those classes “putun authority” over us in the “ Church,’V he well-meant efforts to “ coddle ” the National Church, lastly the Newmapers, bringing their in­cessant bolsters and props to the Church Anglican—to keep all quiet—have driven off the supernatural in the making of everything so supremely human. Now everything is. natural,., Man is so very natural. You cannot take half-measures "with such a produc­tion. It is either true,;or it is not true. No one will for a moment'! doubt that it is not true in the impressions of Mr. A. P. Sinnetfe* Bufc,ilm public will doubt whether he be,not himself deceived. And this, because he relates grave­ly some of the most stupendous impossibilities—as they ap­pear.^

We have said of this book that it will make people un­comfortable. We further add the assertion now, thaBit will make everybody very uncomfortable. But this is always a good sign in a book. It indicates power, and power just in­proportion to the sti^Hnd disturbance of minds which we experience when we read'-the book. We s h ^ | think the higher of everyBeader’s capacity when we find that-such is the case in regard of this book-^which is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary books which we haveBsver read. The vast majority of readers, who from the influences of the world are very incapable, will first be enforced into at­tention in a thrill of wonder; and then they will laugh, for the things which they aBfirst encounter contradict possifl bi|£ty, and although many things are difficult ‘to explain,— still possibility is the measure of everything^ The world of ordinaryilH8r noB the life of the B iffipianL*Hwhts.fl Readers who read in this spinjt of incredulity, which how fl ever they cannot help—belief is always proportioned to the calibre of the m eans of belief—will pityBhe author, and say with the Athenceum that it is a ^disappointing book/W though not for the^same silly reasons. The minofjty will read carefully over every page, will set to work to judge of the whole book, and admire the whole volume and its author immensely. For it is a tremendous book—strangely as it sounds to use such a word in relation to it. Yet th ia s a true characterito give of the Book. It is a tremendous book 4 in its impojt, in*jts suggestion to those who can understand it, and those few must bq the gifted,,, As for the reviewers in their various degrees and#,crafts,” they will very cun­ningly and veryxlumsily, jn preponderating insta^^axpt- up, or take nOuuffig of the volume. These* sublime- editor- iaboccupants of cane-back chairs, wooden arm-chairs, or velvet-covered magisterial arm-chairs perhaps with a crown a-top, if they do not yawn, are safe to get angry with the “Ocoy&r W orld.m in regard to its important contents, the ‘‘Occult W orld Bought to be for them, for their claims to learning and enlightenment are overpowering; but yet it is far from being a book for them.

Mr. A. P. Sinnett’s book is intensely interesting to all persons who can fnlnk. It is brightly, lucidly, logically written—cool -headed, perfectly dispassionat e. It has start­led alS mentally cultivated India; dense and stupid as its reception has been in its author’s own country oft England. Perhaps tc is becafee E^land baslbeen so exceedingly bot­hered and hazed; wi$h ^Spiritualism—vulgar Spighualism, nrepostBiius SpiSitualishC:—until the very term ism and ordinary pragmatical medrams—havebecome annoyance. Now, on the contrary5 tSj! all these in­differently educated pretenders—who make-up in noise and pretension what they are deficient in, in reason—Mr. A. P. Sinnett is always as agreeable as he is forcible. This is the work of a scholar, a gentlemen, and of a man of a large and elevated mind, evidfltly capable and qualified*! He is fitted, from much evidence afforded in hia book, for the exercise of public dutfls of a high and important character. We should consider publiBlndia benefitted in hi feresence, and ijiis connection with state functions, advantageous in every way both tg India and to England ft Aj B-Iiidia must have been much struck with this book. We ourseh' ves have perused every line of it with pleasure, .and have weighed its statements, and considered its evident with careful and conscientious deliberation. We aver that the “ O ccult World ” is a great book, and warn every reasonable person, not quite given-over to prejudice, againslf the eta mour which will be made against it, and the jeering tone in which it will be treated. Who are, the people who sit so superior to these ultra-natural subjects ? Mostly zanies— wind-bags—imitators. We warn all the judicious against the ignorant and conceited attacks which have been made on all sides by an unworthy and envious pressWrBing to the order of the c|ay, and to please certain cliques which sit-upon and iBifle all honest opinion. The modern PresO ias grown so tumid and* artificial that it’is fast ruiningjiyen the pub- lidrcapacity to judgp of wholesome-p,nd genpine j iucism. Perhaps farther? it has so seriously imperilled, even for rescue by gifted and magnanimous minds, thermal! remain­der of capacities, as Mr..Ruskin might tall them, of the studying classes still existent and struggling amidst the confusions of a shallow, log-headed, and grosslygelfish age.

The “Occult World,’’regarded from any point of view is equal to its object—which is certainly the most difficult one. Indeed it may be^called the most rem arkable book—not simply from its newness, bu t from the m anner in which its ncoyness-js.put— which has appeared since Mr. Spicer produced his SSights and Sounds, the Mystery of tffia Dayj^ And why d6&|Mr nett’s “Occult World” stand so alone? L et every person accus­tomed to exercise their common-sense apart from the ideas of others read it. L e t them not only read it, but study it. For why ? For these reasons which may be pronounced signifi­cant and cogent enough by all persons who are not of that powerless sort of compliance of brain which will admit the dicta of pretenBous journals as so much unquestionable law. God knows th a t a g rea t deal of law !—far from ftgjng,justice—■ is no t’to be believed1. And nearly a ll the ii^KrwHRicisms of the tim e may *Be pronounced—to use the strong, bu? the true word—humbug—from the reason th a t it is written all round and round the subject w ithout touching it. In regard to Mr, A. P . Sjnnett’s book, two reviews which we have encountered,
