Le Bonheur’s Medical Director of Emergency Services, Barry Gilmore,MD, was recently honored with the Advocate for Children Award at theannual Tennessee Emergency Medical Services for Children (TNEMSC)conference. Each year, the award is given to the individual who hasprovided an indispensable service above and beyond all expectationsand whose efforts demonstrate exemplary dedication to the well-beingof children. From left to right, Gilmore is pictured with Kevin Brinkman,MD, TNEMSC Foundation President, and Sue Cadwell, PediatricEmergency Care Committee Chair.

Just a few days beforeThanksgiving last year, PatientAccess Facilitator Kendra Henryentered a room in the EmergencyDepartment to register a patient. Thepatient was accompanied by hissister and a woman who was not afamily member, but who transportedthe children to and from churchbecause their mother wasincarcerated. As Kendra interactedwith the patient, it was obvious toher that the children adored andadmired this woman who was goingthe extra mile for their family.

While Kendra and a social workerwere visiting with the kids, thewoman received a phone callinforming her that the children’sapartment had caught fire and nothing was salvaged. Learning thisnews touched Kendra immensely, and she wanted to come up with aplan to do something special for this compassionate woman and thetwo young children. Kendra contacted her leaders and fellow teammembers and asked if the team could “adopt” these two children asChristmas angels. The entire team agreed that this would be awonderful project, and Kendra spearheaded the initiative. The teammembers bought clothes and presents, donated gift cards and madesure the children had winter coats. After collecting the donations,Kendra and another Associate delivered the gifts to the children’schurch friend, who would soon be visiting the children to celebrate oneof their birthdays.

“The woman was overjoyed when she saw all of the gifts for thechildren,” wrote Patient Access Manager Margaret Lee, who nominatedKendra for the Power of One Award. “Kendra went over and above herjob duties to demonstrate the Power of One, and she included fellowteam members who were also able to share in this blessing to others.”

Le Bonheur continues its journey to achieve Magnetstatus. While Magnet recognizes the “gold standard” ofnursing excellence, it actually reflects the exceptional careprovided by all departments in the hospital. Our focus atLe Bonheur is not to only achieve the designation, but tocreate a culture that fosters the best patient outcomes andthe best work environment.

Our next step in the multi-year process is documentsubmission, which is set for August. A site visit by theMagnet committee is anticipated for spring 2016.

Pursuing the Magnet designation will continue while thehospital recruits a new Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Magnetstandards require that there is an interim CNO, which wehave in place – Methodist Le Bonheur Chief NursingExecutive for the system, Nikki Polis.

Magnet designation recognizes excellence in nursing, which includes:

• Nurses flourish as professionals • Professional autonomy • Decision making at the bedside • Nurse involvement in determining their work

environment • Professional education • Teamwork and positive relationships among different

departments and disciplines Receiving Magnet designation is good for nurses, the

entire hospital and our patients and families. Itdemonstrates we have created a “Magnet culture,” in whicheveryone at Le Bonheur puts patients first. Research hasshown that Magnet hospitals consistently provide thehighest quality of care. The standards that hospitals mustattain and maintain are rigorous and demand continualimprovement.

Stay tuned to express and digital signage for updates onour Magnet journey. Be on the lookout, too, for the Magnetmobile unit and special guest appearances from MagnetMan.
