ABSTRACT: I’ve been lucky in my life to have the opportunity not only to create my own operating

system (Mach) which went on to have a large impact on most operating systems in use today, but also

to be given the chance to found a major research lab (Microsoft Research) and be involved in the

growth of Microsoft Corporation from the days of MSDOS 6.0 (to which I contributed a major feature)

to the present day era of world scale cloud computing and AI deep learning. It has been a wild ride

and in this presentation I will talk about the creation and history of Microsoft Research and how it

intertwined with the development of Microsoft Corporation during my 25 year tenure.
