Notes From the Director

When I was a kid in the 1960’s, the careers open to women were mainly limited to being a nurse, a teacher, a secretary and for the adventuresome, perhaps a stewardess. The role of flight attendant, a job open to all ages and genders, had yet to be invented. In South Carolina, women still could not serve on juries. They did not gain that right until 1969. Nationally there had never been a woman on the Supreme Court and the very idea of such a thing seemed totally absurd. Though “Rosie the Riveter” had changed some roles for women following World War II, it was still very much a man’s world.

And yet, more than 120 years before, women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth believed that there were greater

roles for women and that women could, and should, have the same rights as men. How these women, especially Sojourner Truth, who had been born a slave and had her own son sold away from her, could see a world that might be, rather than the world that was, is nothing short of amazing. She was a pathfinder, and the trail she blazed advanced the cause of women and human rights for generations.

While it would take well over a century for many of the rights Sojourner Truth fought for to become a reality, the long quest for justice, freedom and equality began with people like her. Today, most Americans know her name but don’t really know Sojourner’s story. We are fortunate that Sandra Fenichel Asher penned A Woman Called Truth to remind us that though the battles are hard and the journey is long, justice is the birthright of everyone, not just in our country, but in every country. But as we can see by watching the nightly news, equality is not inevitable. In every generation, we must fight for it. Here in our own country, though our nation’s founders established noble ideals of freedom, justice and equality in the Declaration of Independence and in our constitution, living up to those ideals remains a work in progress. As Lincoln reminded us in the Gettysburg Address, this work is never finished:

It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work... that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom —and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Sojourner Truth, in her time, gave us a new birth of freedom. Her life’s story reminds us that we are all sojourners and that our journey continues.

Grand Show Curtain

“Window of Wonder”, Charleston Stage’s Grand Show Curtain, was created especially for Charleston Stage by nationally acclaimed Charleston artist Jonathan Green. “Window of Wonder” was commissioned by Barbara Burgess and John Dinkelspiel as a generous gift to Charleston Stage in 2010.

Dock Street Theatre • America’s First Theatre

The Historic Dock Street Theatre, America’s first theatre, was the first building in America built exclusively to be used for theatrical performances. Originally constructed in 1736 on the corner of Church Street and Dock Street (now Queen Street), the original Dock Street Theatre was probably destroyed by the Great Fire of 1740.

In 1809, the elegant Planter’s Hotel was built on this site. After the Civil War, the Planter’s Hotel fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition. But in

1935, after Milton Pearlstine made the property available to the City of Charleston, and at the urging of the mayor and other prominent citizens, the building was selected for a Depression Era WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. At that time, a new performance space modeled on 18th century London playhouses was constructed within the shell of the old Planters Hotel, the hotel’s lobby serving as the lobby of the new theatre. After being closed for two centuries, the Historic Dock Street Theatre re-opened in 1937 and quickly became the centerpiece of the Charleston arts scene. In 2010, following a three year $19 million dollar renovation by the City of Charleston, the Historic Dock Street Theatre once again re-opened to reclaim its place as the jewel in Charleston’s artistic crown. Today the Historic Dock Street Theatre hosts some of Charleston’s finest performing arts organizations, including Spoleto Festival USA.

Charleston Stage, which became the resident professional theatre at the Dock Street Theatre in 1978, produces over 120 performances here. Each season Charleston Stage plays to an audience of more than 42,000 patrons, including more than 20,000 South Carolina students who enjoy special school day performances throughout the year.

Charleston Stage Leadership

Julian WilesFounder and Producing Artistic Director

Director, designer and playwright, Julian Wiles, founded Charleston Stage, Charleston’s resident professional theatre company, in 1978. It has since grown into South Carolina’s largest professional theatre and one of the state’s largest arts institutions. Over the past 34 years, Wiles has directed and designed more than 200 productions and penned 27 original plays and musicals for the company. Wiles continues to serve as the company’s Producing Artistic Director, heading a staff of 12 full-time theatre professionals.

Mr. Wiles, a South Carolina native, grew up on a cotton farm in Ft. Motte, South Carolina. He attended Clemson University, received a history

degree from the College of Charleston in 1974 and an MFA in Dramatic Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976.

Mr. Wiles has written or adapted 27 original plays and musicals for the company including The Boy Who Stole the Stars, Nevermore: Edgar Allan Poe, the Final Mystery, The Seat of Justice, Denmark Vesey: Insurrection, Gershwin at Folly, Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus, Helium and most recently Inga Binga.

Julian Wiles is a recipient of the 2010 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award, the highest honor in the arts which is awarded by the South Carolina Arts Commission.Mr. Wiles is also a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Marybeth ClarkAssociate Artistic Director and Director of Education

Marybeth Clark, Charleston Stage’s Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education, is in her fifteenth season with Charleston Stage. Mrs. Clark has a degree in theatre/performance from the University of South Florida. She worked as an actor in professional theatres throughout the Southeast for ten years before settling in Charleston in 1994 where she was a member of the theatre faculty at Charleston County’s School of the Arts for middle and high school students.

As an actor for Charleston Stage, Mrs. Clark has appeared in Helium, Moon Over Buffalo, You Can’t Take It With You, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Steel Magnolias and A Christmas Carol. Each summer

Mrs. Clark directs Charleston Stage’s SummerStage Musical Theatre Camp for more than 60 young people. Productions have included Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Seussical the Musical, Disney’s Aladdin, Disney’s High School Musical, Guys and Dolls Jr., Bugsy Malone Jr., Willy Wonka Jr. and Disney’s Alice In Wonderland Jr. Mrs. Clark has directed more than a dozen MainStage and Family Series shows for Charleston Stage, most recently Chicago, A Christmas Carol, Avenue Q, The Wiz and Legally Blonde the Musical.

Sojourner Truth

Long before Susan B. Anthony began the fight for women’s suffrage, 100 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Birmingham bus and years before the Emancipation Proclamation was proclaimed, a remarkable woman traveled about the county fighting for the basic rights of human dignity. This was Sojourner Truth, whose life is chronicled in this month’s production of A Woman Called Truth.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York state around 1797. Her first language was Dutch, the language of the area’s first settlers. When she was sold to English-speaking owners, she was punished because she had such trouble with their language. Although she never

learned to read and write, she developed a remarkable command for the spoken word and could recite long passages from the Bible from memory. In 1850, she published her autobiography, narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave. Much of the play is based on this narrative.

After she was freed in 1827 (all slaves over the age of 25 in New York State were freed that year), she used her remarkable speaking skills to take one of the few jobs open to a woman, that of an evangelist. But first, she had to confront the personal tragedy of having her son, Peter, illegally sold to new owners in Alabama. Sojourner Truth took the unprecedented step of taking her former white owner to court. The court ruled in Truth’s favor and gave her back her son. This pivotal event gave her the strength to devote her life to fighting for justice, freedom and basic human rights. She eventually set out to spread “God’s truth”, and became an influential abolitionist speaker and joined the early fight for women’s rights.

In many ways, the struggles for civil rights and human dignity that have begun to come to fruition in this century, began more than 150 years ago with the first steps of Sojourner Truth’s remarkable journey.

Jalaya Dargan (Young Sojourner/Other Girl)Jalaya makes her acting debut on this stage. She has been singing and acting since the age of 3-years-old. She is very excited to be a part of such a wonderful cast and would like to thank Charleston Stage for this opportunity. Jalaya is an 8th grade student at Charleston County School of the Arts (SOA), where she majors in Vocal. Jalaya has been a part of countless musicals that SOA has put on including Les Miserables. She has also been chosen to be a part of the SC “All-State Chorus” three years in a row. She loves to act and sing and aspires to be on Broadway one day.

Scott Gibbs (Auctioneer/Master Scriver/Caitlin/Gedney/Officer)Scott was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He is thrilled to be returning to the South after spending the last year working with the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn, New York. Regionally, he has also worked with the Seaside Repertory Theatre and the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Scott is a proud graduate from Centenary College of Louisiana in 2011 with a BA in Theatre Arts. Harrison Grant (Bob/Overseer/Ensemble)Harrison is from Titusville, Florida, and is a graduate from the University of Central Florida’s BFA Acting Program. Most recently he appeared in The Lost Colony in Manteo, North Carolina. Other past show credits include Antonio in Twelfth Night, Benny in Rent, Nat in From Sun to Sun and Kenickie in Grease. He has also appeared in shows such as Ragtime and The Pirates of Penzance. Harrison is a member of Charleston Stage’s 2012-2013 Professional Resident Acting Company. Josh attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Josh has two degrees in Musical Theatre and Acting/Directing with a minor in

Tamia Horton (Young Sojourner/Other Girl)Tamia is a 7th grade Dance Major at Charleston County School of the Arts and is thrilled to be performing in her second season with Charleston Stage as Young Sojourner in A Woman Called Truth. Tamia’s debut performance was as L’il Inez in Charleston Stage’s production of Hairspray. Tamia is currently a student at The Charleston Dance Institute training under the talented and amazing co-founders Stephen Gabriel and Jonathan Tabbert. Tamia is also enrolled in gymnastics at West Ashley School of Performing Arts. Tamia’s

professional performing credits also include seasons with Charleston Ballet Theatre, Robert Ivey Ballet and The Charleston Dance Factory. Tamia would like to thank her family, friends and teachers for their encouragement and support as she pursues her love and passion of dancing, singing and acting.

Malcolm Johnson Palmer (Young Sojourner’s Brother/Young Pete)Malcolm is overjoyed with joining the cast of A Woman Called Truth in his inaugural performance with Charleston Stage. A “true entertainer” is how he is described by his parents, Henry and Shavonne Palmer, who, at a very early age, thrust him in front of the masses at his church, Greater Zion AME, to give speeches, praise dance and sing songs. Malcolm caught the acting bug in elementary school when he was cast as Mr. Salt in Jennie Moore Elementary’s version of Willy Wonka. Malcolm is currently a sixth grade Theatre major at The

Charleston County School of the Arts. When Malcolm is not studying, he enjoys listening to music, playing Xbox games and watching WWE Wrestling matches with his best bud and biggest fan, his little brother Mekhi. Malcolm is truly grateful for all of his friends, relatives, godparents and church family and would like to thank them for their love, support and prayers. Arielle Kook (Mrs. Neely/Mrs. Gedney)Arielle is originally from Columbia, Maryland, but has been a kind of a global nomad, living in Egypt, Israel and Maryland. Arielle recently graduated from James Madison University with a B.A. in Theatre and Dance and a concentration in Musical Theatre. Her regional performances have included Kitty in The Drowsy Chaperone (Theatre by the Sea) and Brenda in Hairspray (Theatre by the Sea). Her favorite university performances have included Ado Annie in Oklahoma, Rachel in Reckless, Clarice in Servant of Two Masters

and Sarah in Falling for Eve. Arielle is a member of Charleston Stage’s 2012-2013 Professional Resident Acting Company. Vinnie Mercer (Grown-Up Pete/Ensemble)Vinnie is from Baltimore, MD and is a recent college graduate from Charleston Southern with a degree in Psychology. While in school he appeared as Hamlet in Hamlet and Nick in The Guys. He also appeared in musicals as Wally Ferguson in 1940’s Radio Hour and Moon Face Martin in Anything Goes. Vinnie appeared as the Lion in the Charleston Stage production of The Wiz last season and most recently as Frat Boy/Padamadan/Nikos in Charleston Stage’s season opener Legally Blonde the Musical. He thanks the Lord for his talents

Brittani Minnieweather (Sissy/Ensemble)Brittani is a graduate of Wofford College where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre. She has appeared in collegiate, community, and regional theatre. Most notably she has worked alongside Ms. Debbie Allen as Happy in Debbie Allen’s Brothers of the Knight and she traveled to Evansville, Indiana to perform at the Lincoln Amphitheatre. Devon has just finished his BFA in Musical Theatre and BA in Speech/Theatre Education at Lindenwood University this past May. Devon was just seen in the Regional Premier of Cry Baby as a Wiffle/Drape/Prisoner in St. Louis at New Line Theatre. John Smalls (Baumfrey/Old Man/Ensemble)John is a veteran of the stage and is honored to be working again with Charleston Stage. He was seen as The Scarecrow in The Wiz last season. He also performed as Pastor Lawrence and Thomas Dorsey in the 2010 and 2012 Piccolo Spoleto productions of Mahalia, A Gospel Musical. He played four characters (Robbins, Lawyer Frazier, Crab Man and Nelson) in the 2012 production of Porgy and Bess at the Dock Street Theatre. John has been blessed to tour inside and out of the country alongside great artists such as Kim Burrell,

The Clark Sisters, Vickie Winans, The Anointed Pace Sisters, the late Reverend Timothy Wright, and many more. Other acting credits include Deacon Bell in A Question of Color, Henry Simpson in Toys In The Attic, Booker T. Washington in Ragtime, Herald Loomis in Joe Turner’s Come And Gone, Attorney Harold Boulware in The Seat of Justice, The Reverend Billy Hightower in Bat Boy, The Musical!, Sly Stone in Soul of the 60’s, and The Man in Crowns. John is a featured soloist on two CD recordings produced by The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir. He performs gullah and negro spirituals full time with Ann Caldwell and The Magnolia Singers. With a very tedious schedule, he even finds time as a male model for Millie Lewis at Charleston. John sincerely believes that only what you do for Christ will last, and as an ordained elder in the Church of God in Christ worldwide, he uses the platform of entertainment to be a living testimony of how God can use His people in any arena or setting for His glory.

Teresa Smith (Old Woman/Ensemble)Teresa is delighted to be back on the stage with Charleston Stage again. She recently earned her Doctorate degree in Education from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Though her passion is Education, she loves performing on the stage in local theatres. Some of her favorite roles include, Maisy (Gershwin at Folly), Rose (Fences), Tillie (Blue), Mother Raccoon (Beneath the Sweetgrass Moon), and Sister Boxer (The Amen Corner) just to name few. In addition to stage acting, she has filmed local and regional

commercials such as Piggly Wiggly, Jones Ford, CDS Remodeling, SC Get Out and Vote Campaign, and industrial videos for MUSC and Benefitfocus. She was cast in the movie “Dear John” and two independent films, Untouched and Song of Pumpkin Brown. She made her TV debut in 2006 on the hit series “One Tree Hill”. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and attends Faith Assembly of God Church in Summerville. She has two children---both are rescued animals: a 14-year old dog, Hannah and a 9-year old Cat- “Gurlie Gurl”.
