A2 MEDIA EVALUATION – SHORT FILM
Katie Lawrence
IN WHAT WAY DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHANGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
For the short film we decided to follow conventions
through props and locations. We used a sharp
object as the weapon and used locations such as a
graveyard and a garage.
However we decided to break traditional horror
convention by making our killer female.
Weapon
We stuck to the
conventions of a horror by
using a sharp instrument
to kill our victim.
Location
The locations we filmed in
were a graveyard and a
garage. Both of these
locations are conventional
to a horror film
Characters
Our killer is unconventional to a horror film. Although the killer
conventionally comes from a troubled past that motivates them to
murder, she is female whereas in a conventional horror film the
killers are usually male.
Our victim is stereotypical to a horror film. The
victim fits into the stereotypical role of the
defenceless female.
FILM TITLE
Our short film is named ‘Guess Who’, taken from a
piece of the dialogue from the film. The title
conforms to conventions because it gives a
mysterious feel to the film and creates some
tension in the audience before they have seen the
film.
NARRATIVE
The narrative for our short film is conventional to a
horror film. The film starts with the victim in a
graveyard, through this sequence audiences can
identify and sympathise with the victim making her
capture and murder more shocking. For the murder
scene we would have liked to have made it more
graphic but with limited resources we decided to
angle specific shots that would allow the audience
to use their imagination instead of the gore being
shown on screen.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF
YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
For the ancillary project we decided to do a film
poster and a magazine article reviewing our film.
We found that these would be more effective for
advertising our short film

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK?
For our audience research we created a questionnaire
and also planned questions for a focus group. We also
uploaded our short film to youtube to see what
audiences thought of our film.
Questionnaire results
We took into advice some of our
audience feedback from the
questionnaire.
We took into account some of our
audience feed back when
creating our film.
For instance the type of killer we
would have and the locations.
The audience research also
helped when creating our
ancillary projects. It helped us
know which ancillaries would aid
our film best and how to format
them.
We uploaded our short film to
youtube to get responses from our
audiences and gain audience
feedback. From the feedback we
can learn from their comments and
criticisms and also understand
certain aspects of the film they
enjoyed.

HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND
EVALUATION STAGES?
We used youtube to find
clips for analysis.
Youtube also aided our film
process. We used youtube to
upload films to both gain
audience feedback and also to
make it easier to upload onto
our blogs.
