Audience research

We decided to carry out some audience research on people who listened to music and those who

watched music videos. We carried out this research because we felt that it would aid us immensely when it came to us choosing our

band/artist and the genre we would like to create a music video in

We carried out primary research which consisted of doing a questionnaire on a sample of 100

people and interviews with 3 people who were all from different age brackets.

We then decided to put our results into graphs so that it could be we could easily analyse our findings

What music genre is most appealing to you?

As we want to direct a song from the Indie Rock genre this information shows us that the genre has a huge area for development compared to other genres and we feel that we can fill in that gap with our band and

make it as successful as genres such as rap and Hip Hop.

How often do you listen to music? (Hours a day)

These results showed us that people do take time out during their day to listen to music consequently, we concluded that maybe the song we do, should have a meaning that our target audience can relate to in order for it to be successful due to the fact that people are making time through

their day to listen to music therefore maybe it needs to mean something to them to do so, for example the lyrical content and style of music

Who is your favorite artist/Band at present?

. These result showed us that artists were more successful then bands at the moment, however the artists that are doing good are the ones that are already established artists such as Jay Sean, Lil Wayne and in the others column we had artists such as Cheryl Cole, Kanye West and 50

Cent, therefore looking at this we decided that entering a new artist in to the music industry and hoping for success would be a huge if not

impossible task. So we decided that by choosing to do a band we would have less competition to deal with and by choosing to do an Indie Rock

band there was even more chance for instance success.

What is your favorite song of 2009?

The results for favourite song of 2009 also helped us when deciding what genre to do and weather to do a band or artist, as we found that ‘sex is on fire’ which is sung by Kings of Leon was a huge success and was liked by

the people we questioned. Looking at the results of favourite artist or band and using the results we have now we concluded that bands can be popular and successful however a lot of it depends on the song. Therefore if we get the song right and with the feeling we have about there being a gap which can be filled with a new band in the music industry we would

go ahead with doing a band. Furthermore our decision was also influenced by the others column were we found people liked songs that were sung by

bands such as Red Hot Chilli Peppers ‘can’t stop’.

Which artist/band do you think has been most successful during 2009?

These results showed us that the audience felt that the kings of Leon who are a band were most successful during 2009, this showed us that it was possible for a band to be successful in today’s day and age and therefore

going ahead with choosing a band would be quite a good choice, furthermore as Kings of Leon are also part of the Indie Rock genre this

tells us that the genre is listened to and has a huge fan base consequently it would benefit us as we choose to do a Indie Rock Band.

Who is your favorite artist/Band of all time:

Our research for the question above didn’t really give us much information that would benefit us, however the fact that bands such as

Abba and Queen were part of peoples all time favourites it just showed us once again that bands can be successful.

What is your favorite song of all time?

The favourite songs of all time graph once again didn’t really have much influence on our choice but it was encouraging to see that ‘we are the

champions’ which was sung by a band called ‘Queen’ was part of peoples all time favourites.

Which music genre do you think has an area for development or for new talent?

These results were extremely surprising yet very encouraging due to the fact that we were surprised that people felt that the Indie Rock genre was the genre which had the biggest area for development or for new talent however it egged us on even more to go for the Indie rock genre simply because we felt that we could fill in the gap that people felt was there

with our band.

Which music genre do you least listen to?

These results just really gave us an incite into how many people didn’t listen to Indie rock, this helped us as we felt that we could use

conventions that perhaps were used in Rap or R&B genres which were most popular and may be use some of them in a very mild manor in our

Indie Rock video to perhaps increase our audience

Interviews

We carried out interviews on people, from the ages of 5-16, 16-25 and 25+. We decided to the age groups because we felt that it would give a good indication of who our target audience group would be and just help a lot in general when it came to producing our video in terms of what to include or how to do certain shots.

We decided to ask 3 main questions these were, 1. do you think music videos are important 2. what do you think makes an artist/band successful 3. What do you think music videos are missing?

We took the notes from all 3 interviews and summarised our findings into paragraphs which are below.

Question 1:Overall, we found that all 3 age groups agreed on the fact that music videos were definitely important. Interestingly the 16-25 found that music videos were more important than the actual songs, we felt this would be key information for us as we were also hoping to target that age group.

Question 2:This was a very interesting question because we felt that if the target audience told us what they thought would make a band/artist successful than there was nothing stopping us. We found that the 25+ group thought that it wasn’t the song content or the music video but in fact was the amount of publicity and media hype around a band/artists what ensures success. The 5-16 thought it was the song lyrics as they thought that if the lyrics were ones that could be related to by the target audience then it would ensure success. The 16-25 group disagreed and actually thought that if the music videos were what the audience wanted to see than the band would be successful, this was encouraging as we were also going to produce a music video for our target audience who happen to be in the 16-25 age band.

Question 3:The 5-16 age band didn’t feel music videos were missing anything. However both the 16-25 and 25+ age bands both felt that some music videos lacked meaning and should be more to do with the lyrics as it would make it more enjoyable. We also took this on board as we felt that we could have a relationship between what the audience were seeing and hearing in terms of lyrics.
