Lorde
Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Group 3Isaac, Georgia, Gwen and Alexander
Treatment• A 12 year old boy lives with an abusive family who don’t care for him• He retreats to his bedroom to escape the misery of his life at home• The room is filled with toys, colour and lights, which symbolises his
childish innocence and imagination• He starts dreaming up fantastical adventures featuring him and his
family, who are now happy and pleasant• At the end of the song he leaves his room, the lights turn off, the toys
stop working, and we see that his family are still arguing• We realise this has been a metaphor for how one child deals with a
broken home
Characters
Ideological Discourse• Our narrative does not challenge
dominant ideologies, it supports them• Children need protecting• It raises awareness about the
dangers of domestic abuse and how it affects people, especially children• We are showing how those not
directly targeted by abuse are still affected by it indirectly
Locations
Mise-en-SceneProps:• Ashtrays filled with cigarette stubs• Empty bottles/cans of alcohol
Costumes:• Simple clothing devoid of shape or
colour (cheap brand)• The costumes become stylistic
during the dream sequences, such as medieval costumes, or Viking hats etc
Colour and Lighting• Low-key lighting in the opening
sequence, to suggest unhappiness or anger• Desaturated and largely devoid of
colour, to create a drab, heavy atmosphere• We would juxtapose this with
high-key lighting in the dream sequences to show his happiness and innocence• We would saturate the colour to
suggest life and imagination
Camera• Using depth of field gives the
character prevalence. It also hides the parents violence in the blur (a bit) and shows how he rejects the sadness in his home• Use of high angle shots to make the
character appear small and vulnerable• Use of low angle shots to make the
parents/older brother appear menacing and scary• Use of long shots to make characters
appear vulnerable or small
Key Findings• A sense of motion is created
through the use of tracking shots• Depth of field is used to give
characters prevalence and show a state of mind• Low and high angles can be used
to make characters seem strong or weak• Long shots can be used to make a
character appear small (especially when playing with perspective)
Continuous tracking shot
