1 GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Feature Description
Abutment The abutments are located on either side of the bridge and support the deck as well as retaining the
adjacent soil and embankment.
Bridge A raised structure built to carry vehicles or
pedestrians over the main carriageway.
Cantilever A structural feature which projects beyond a
supporting column or wall and is counterbalanced and/or supported at only one end.
Cantilevered wall
A reinforced concrete retaining wall, stabilised by a large toe in front of the structure.
Deck The top surface of a bridge which carries the traffic.
Embankment Angled grading of the ground.
Formwork Temporary or permanent moulds into which concrete or similar materials are poured.
Footing The enlarged lower portion of the substructure or foundation which rests directly on the soil, bedrock, or piles; usually below ground and not visible.
Parapet / Guardrail
A barrier or guardrail on the outside edge of the bridge deck to prevent people and vehicles from falls
onto the carriageway below.
Pier
A central support for the bridge deck between the
abutments. This is usually located in the middle of the central reserve between the two opposing
carriageways.
Reinforced
concrete
Concrete which gains added strength by placing wire
mesh or rods into the formwork before the concrete is poured.
Reinforcement Adding strength or bearing capacity to a structural member. An example includes the placing of metal rebar into formwork before pouring concrete.
Retaining wall A wall to retain material such as earth.
Span The horizontal space between two supports of a structure.
Steel and
reinforced concrete
composite deck
The top section of a bridge directly below road level,
constructed using steel beams supporting reinforced concrete slabs.
Substructure The part of the structure below deck level including
abutments, piers, wing walls and foundations.
Superstructure The deck of the structure supported by abutments
and piers.
Wing wall A wall at the abutment of a bridge which extends
beyond the bridge to retain earth behind the abutment.

2 INTRODUCTION
The following notes and drawings show Cornwall Council's current proposals for the structures (over bridges and retaining walls) on the A30
Temple to Higher Carblake scheme. These may be subject to change because of developments in the detailed
design or amendments due to public consultation as part of the statutory processes.

3 CARDINHAM DOWNS JUNCTION
3.1 Description
The new structure will carry the C0109 road over the A30.
The construction consists of a two span steel and reinforced concrete composite deck supported on reinforced concrete
abutments and pier, with reinforced concrete wingwalls.
The wingwalls will be faced with granite. 3.2 Purpose
The new bridge will allow the existing side roads which serve
Waterloo and Blisland to the north and Cardinham to the south to pass safely over the A30 dual carriageway.
3.3 Location
The new bridge is to be located at the western end of the scheme near to Helligan Woods.
The grid reference is (SX) 210753 070755
3.4 Abutments / Wing walls / Retaining Walls
The substructure consists of a reinforced concrete column pier, reinforced concrete abutments and wing walls, founded on spread footings.
The wing walls will be faced with granite to allow the structure to tie
in with the surrounding area. 3.5 Superstructure
The superstructure is a square continuous two span steel and
reinforced concrete composite deck with equal spans of 24.75m semi-integral with the abutments and integral with the pier.
3.6 Parapet / Guardrail
Pre-cast cantilevered reinforced concrete edge beams support metal parapets.
3.7 Features
The new roads over the bridges will consist of a 6.8m wide single carriageway with a 1.5m wide paved verge either side.
3.8 Drawing Reference
The General Arrangement for the scheme can be found in drawing reference TRXCP311/AIP/S201.

4 PREEZE CROSS JUNCTION
4.1 Description
The new structure will carry the C0034 over the A30.
The construction consists of a single span steel and reinforced concrete composite deck supported on reinforced concrete
abutments with reinforced concrete wingwalls.
The wingwalls will be faced with granite. 4.2 Purpose
The new bridge will allow the existing side roads which serve
Blisland to the north and Cardinham and Millpool to the south to pass safely over the A30 dual carriageway.
4.3 Location
The new bridge is to be located between the centre and western end of the scheme near at the existing Preeze Cross junction.
The grid reference is (SX) 211723 071241
4.4 Abutments / Wing walls / Retaining Walls
The substructure consists of reinforced concrete abutments and wing walls, founded on spread footings.
The wing walls will be faced with granite to allow the structure to tie in with the surrounding area.
4.5 Superstructure
The superstructure is a square single span steel and reinforced concrete composite deck with a 29.6m span semi-integral with the
abutments. 4.6 Parapet / Guardrail
Pre-cast cantilevered reinforced concrete edge beams support metal
parapets.
4.7 Features
The new road over the bridge will consist of a 6.8m wide single
carriageway with a 1.5m wide paved verge either side. 4.8 Drawing Reference
The General Arrangement for the scheme can be found in drawing
reference TRXCP311/AIP/S301.

5 TEMPLE TOR JUNCTION
5.1 Description
The new structure will carry the C0300 road over the A30.
The construction consists of a two span steel and reinforced concrete composite deck supported on reinforced concrete
abutments and pier, with reinforced concrete wingwalls.
The wingwalls will be faced with granite. 5.2 Purpose
The new bridge will allow the existing side roads which serve St
Breward to the north and Temple to the south to pass safely over the A30 dual carriageway.
5.3 Location
The new bridge is to be located to the eastern end of the scheme near to Manor Common.
The grid reference is (SX) 213630 073641.
5.4 Abutments / Wing walls / Retaining Walls
