WASHBURN Heritage Centre Our theme from October to December 2016 is a partnership with the King Street Workshops from The Old Workhouse at Pateley Bridge, bringing together a group of renowned artists, makers and designers to share their knowledge, skills and expertise. We hope you’ll enjoy some events and drop in to see the exhibition at the Centre. Other Stuff... Workshops… All our workshops take place at the Washburn Heritage Centre Raku firing workshop Wednesday 19 October, 9.30am-4.30pm Learn the art of ‘Raku’, a pottery firing process developed in 16th century Japan, with experienced tutor Fiona Mazza. Glaze and fire your own pot. Bring an apron. Includes home-made refreshments and a delicious 2 course lunch. £30 per person, £24 members. Winter wire workshop Saturday 5 November, 9.30am-4.30pm Adorn your garden with a characterful wire hen, duck or pheasant sculpture, under the friendly tuition of Chris Moss, renowned wire artist. This workshop provides the techniques, tools and tuition to make a life size chicken wire bird that will happily live outside. Gloves and materials are provided but with the nature of chicken wire, it's recommended that 'old' clothes are worn. The workshop is suitable for beginners but techniques require some hand eye coordination and dexterity. Includes home-made refreshments and a delicious 2 course lunch. £60 per person, £48 members. Festive wreath workshop Saturday 10 December, 10am-12noon or 2-4pm Come and make your own Christmas wreath. Excellent tuition given by Daphne Wilson, with details of what to bring when you book. Includes mulled wine and mince pies. £12.50 per person, £10 members. Events take place at Washburn Heritage Centre, unless otherwise stated King Street Workshops www.washburnvalley.org Jazz night Friday 14 October, 7.30-10pm Come and join us for an evening with local jazz pianist Peter Thompson, as he plays and talks about ragtime and The Great American Songbook. Peter cut his jazz teeth as pianist with Bob Barclay’s Yorkshire Jazz Band when it had a regular Saturday night spot at the (then) Grand Hotel in Harrogate. Light supper included and cash bar available. £12.50 per person, £10 members. Visit to King Street Workshops at the Old Workhouse, Pateley Bridge Friday 9 December, 2-5pm Watch and experience demonstrations by many of the artists including sculpting, glass blowing, jewellery making, ceramics, stained glass and millinery. A chance to buy that special Christmas present followed by late night opening in Pateley Bridge for Christmas with many of the shops open. Includes light refreshments. £6 per person, £5 members.

Tales from a biscuit tinThursday 6 OctoberA practical talk advising on how a box of old photos and letters can be researched to help identify dates, names, places and events. Examples of successfully researched family memorabilia will be presented and on display. Bev Anderson and Phil Taylor from Folk Finders Family History will explain.

Pillars PastTuesday 25 OctoberNumber 6 Studio Gallery & Joseph Hayton Sculpture present an enlightening talk and film demonstrating the tools and methods used to create Joe's public art work 'Pillars Past' which represents the history of Nidderdale in three lifelike stone figures. This striking installation can be seen on the old railway turntable in Pateley Bridge.

Unique and colourful jewelleryThursday 10 NovemberDebbie Moxon and Ian Simm make contemporary jewellery in a variety of colours and materials including titanium, silver, gold, opals, precious and semi-precious stones. Their jewellery is displayed throughout the UK, and they will share with you their techniques and knowledge of heat colouring titanium, handcrafted jewellery.

Talks...A Lasting LegacyWednesday 16 NovemberPractical advice on how best to organise and present your family records, documents, photos and genealogy research in an interesting, understandable and engaging way to share with family and friends. Example family history albums, large scale family tree charts and attractive storage solutions will be on display. With Bev Anderson and Phil Taylor from Folk Finders Family History.

Suppers...Our splendid suppers all take place at the Centre from 7-10pm and include a welcome drink with a cash bar. £24 per person, £19.50 members.

ThanksgivingFriday 4 NovemberTraditional thanksgiving feast with American themed dishes - pecan, pumpkin and pie. Interludes of yankee entertainment. Adorn your attire with a few stars and stripes! Weekday Walks...Both these walks start away from the Centre at 9am and include a tasty 2 course lunch back at the Centre with tea/coffee, finishing by about 2pm. Sorry, but no dogs. £12.50 per person, £10 members.

The Glass RouteThursday 24 NovemberMeet at Blubberhouses car park on the A59, at the top of Fewston reservoir. We will walk up the Old Turnpike Road, pass the former silica quarry, turn east across country to re-join the Washburn below Thruscross dam, and then follow the river back to the car park. Just under 5 miles.

Stainburn CircuitWednesday 7 DecemberNew territory for us. Meet at Almscliffe Crag, near Stainburn, map ref 265492 – not Little Almscliffe Crag! We will follow good tracks and lanes in a scenic route around Braythorn and Stainburn, before driving from the Crag to the Centre for lunch.

Sunday Stroll...Sunday Stroll Sunday 30 October, 10.30am-2.30pmEnjoy coffee & biscuits on arrival, then an easy 2 hour (dog friendly) walk, followed by a welcome drink and a satisfying 3 course lunch. Cash bar. £24 per person, £19.50 members.
