So what makes a good instructor?Drivers always remember learning to drive - often recalling their instructor’s name and how many tests they took to pass their test. It is both a life event and a skill for life.

And that is why the AA believes it is vitally important that our instructors have the right personal attributes to make learning both an achievement and a pleasure.

As a future self-employed business person, your skills and professionalism play a vital part as they are the key generators to building your reputation and future success of your career.

The important qualities we look for are someone who:

• has what it takes to run a small business

• can manage their time and finances, while keeping on top of paperwork

• gets satisfaction from making a positive difference to other people’s lives

• takes pride in presenting a professional outward image

• enjoys learning new skills and developing their own knowledge

• communicates clearly, respectfully and sensitively

• is patient and calm under pressure

• puts the customer at the heart of what they do

• is a ‘people person’ that other people enjoy working and being with.

Of course, you will need a commitment to learning and a desire to work with others, as being a driving instructor is very much a people-orientated job.

As such, you need to a person who keeps calm, maintains control and will earn the trust of your pupils. Above all, you must share a passion for equipping novice drivers with this unique life skill and preparing them for safe and confident driving.

Do you have these qualities? If so, you have a solid base to become a successful driving instructor.

DSA requirements

Driving Instructor Training measures three distinct success factors:

Part 1 Theory Test Part 2 Practical Test of Driving Ability Part 3 Instructional Ability (your practical ability to deliver tuition and impart your knowledge to others)

See the AA Driving Instructor Training Course section for more details on each part.

You must pass each part before the next exam can be taken and qualification must be within two years of passing the first part.

To achieve these requirements, we have:

- online learning which supports all three parts of your driver instructor training (this can be revisited as many times as you need)

- 54 hours of 1:1 training with your own Driving Instructor

- optional extra hours with a buddy (where available) should you need it

- workbooks and other supporting reading materials provided as an integral part of the training

Training payment options

Our flexible payment options enable you to either pay as you learn, meaning you can pay for each module separately, or you can prepay for the full training course to take advantage of a generous saving. We also offer an interest-free payment plan option to help you spread the cost of your training over time*.

Once you’ve qualified, we’ll offer you the opportunity to take out an AA Driving School franchise with discounted fees throughout your first 6 months – great for helping to keep costs down while you build up your new business. You’ll receive £1,500 over these 6 months which probably makes our training the most cost-effective choice around. We’ll also provide initial training to get you started and you’ll drive away your new dual-controlled tuition vehicle.

What you need to get started

To join any ADI course you’ll need to have held a valid driving licence for at least 48 months before you start training. You’ll also need to be over 21 and be able to read a new style number plate from 26.5m away.

Part 2 Driving Ability

This module consists of practical driving sessions and is designed to bring your personal standard of driving up to the high level required by the DVSA/DVTA. You’ll train with one of our qualified driving instructor trainers on a 1:1 basis, who will be local to your area.

Your trainer will prepare you for a one hour practical test of your driving ability. This is an advanced driving test and a very high standard of competence is required. But don’t worry as we’ll provide all the support you need to get you through it.

Firstly, you’ll be asked to complete an eyesight test and perform a check onthe condition and safety of five components of the vehicle. You must be able to demonstrate a high level of driving technique, anticipation and consideration of other road users. You’ll also need to carry out a number of manoeuvres. The Driving Ability element of this course comes with 12 hours of 1:1 training and the opportunity to use an in-car buddy (where available).

Part 1 Theory – Computer-based Theory and Hazard Perception tests

Working at home using the e-learning system and other supportingmaterials supplied by the AA, you can work through the course in your own time and arrange the test when you’re ready. The test has 100 multiple choice questions of which you need to get at least 85 right. You’ll also need to achieve minimum marks of 80% in these four subject areas:

• Road Procedure• Traffic Signs and Signals• Driving Test and Laws• Instructional Techniques

TechniquesThere’s also a Hazard Perception test. For this, you’ll be shown 14 video clips, each containing at least one developing hazard. You’ll need to identify the hazards during the early part of their development and get 57 out of a maximum of 75 marks to pass.

This part of your training includes 2 hours of 1:1training with an AA driving instructor trainer.

9

The ADI exams are in three parts:

DIR00127_DS0016_0514.indd 11 22/04/2014 15:25

Page 12: AA Driving Instructor Training - TheAA.com...The AA Driving Instructor Training Course Our online learning system makes use of the latest technology available to support your training:

Part 3 Instructional Ability

So far you will have shown you are a very good driver. Now, you’ll need to demonstrate that you can teach others. The test for this final part consists of two half-hour driving lessons where the examiner acts as a pupil in a role-play situation. This follows in-car training with your instructor, of which there are 40 hours of 1:1 training included in this element of the course. You’ll also have the chance of extra 1:2 training with a buddy (where available).

Once you pass this Part 3 test, you’ll become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor. But our support doesn’t end there, in fact it is just the beginning.
