AA Hold WorkshopPreparing for Summer and Fall 2011 Registration

1You can major in Biology Biology with Concentration in:Cell and Molecular BiologyMicrobiologyIntegrative Animal BiologyMarine BiologyEnvironmental Biology (Choose 1 of 3 tracks)Ecology and BioDiversity Track Environmental Microbiology TrackEnvironmental Plant Biology Track

The USF Bachelor of Science Biology degree provides both a strong Liberal Arts education in Biology and the technical skills

Biology has 5 concentrations and 3 tracks for you to choose from. You should pick one and declare it as soon as possible.

2AgendaReview your Spring mid-term grades on OASIS Estimate your anticipated grade in each courseComplete your AA Hold WorksheetView your DegreeWorks audit To access DegreeWorks, login to Blackboard click on the Academics Tab. Click on Click here to enter DegreeWorks link.

We will review your midterm grades, anticipate you final grades, complete your worksheet and then use DegreeWorks to help you determine what classes you should take.3Your GradesLog Into OASISMidterm grades are available for your review.Complete your AA WorksheetBased on your midterm grade estimate your final grade in each course

Please download your mid-term grades from Oasis; we can use your midterm grade as an estimated final grade for your classes.Download your AA Hold Worksheet. Pencil in your estimated grades in the worksheet. These slides will help you understand how to finish your worksheet.4AA Hold Worksheet

Please fill in the your current course work information. The course number, title, credits and your anticipated grade or midterm grade. The other columns will be used to help you make decisions or help your advisor help you. Have you met with your professor? Have you started attending tutoring sessions? These tutoring sessions help ensure student success. The last column asks you to consider if you will withdraw from this class; this is an important decision since it will affect your future enrollment especially if it is one of your prerequisite classes.

5AA Hold Worksheet

Spring Semester Courses

This is an example of a completed worksheet with an average course schedule. In this example the C- will not be sufficient for the student to continue to the Calculus class so they would have to determine if they will be able to obtain a final grade of C or better in order to advance. Students that have a D grade and feel they cannot get a passing grade should discuss this with their advisor. Advisor are available to help students make important decisions and offer information on options and consequences.6Complete the WorksheetComplete the second part of the AA Worksheet with classes you have already taken

The second part of the worksheet will be completed with the non-science degree requirements your the Foundations of Knowledge and Learning FKLs. The FKL requirements include a set of General Education courses and Upper-level FKL courses. Please fill in the spaces with classes you have already taken; we will use the remaining courses to complete your schedule. These classes should be used so your schedule has a little variety, not just science classes.7Undergraduate EnrollmentUndergraduate Student Enrollment Definition For Financial Aid and Loan DefermentFull Time 12 or more hoursHalf Time 6 to 11 hoursLess than Half Time 1 to 5 hours

A min of 12 hours is needed to be considered a full time student and to qualify for Financial Aid and Loan Deferments. There are few that want you to have more 15 hours, but the most important thing is for you to be successful. Pre-health students may want to take a heavier class load; however, it is not recommended that you take a heavy course load during your first year.

8Why have a balanced schedule?Financial Aid

Academic ProbationUSF GPA = all college coursework attempted at USF ONLY

D/F Rule for Life Science Majors3 or more and you are out of major

GPA for future goals3.6 Overall GPA is competitive for med school

Why not take more than 15 hours? If you drop your classes or do not do well you may lose your financial aid. If you do poorly your USF GPA could go below 2.0 and you would be put in academic probation. Students who receive three (3) D grades and/or F grades in the major and supporting science coursework at USF will be required to change their major to a field outside of the life sciences.A high GPA is required if you are planning to go to medical school. Remember you want to have a GPA that is competitive, not just the required since you will be competing for a spot in that health care field.

9What should I register for? SummerTake Biology, Math or PhysicsMinor requirements or foreign languageAlthough Chemistry should be your priority it is not recommended you take it in the summer

If you are taking summer classes consider taking Biology, Math or Physics. Another option is for you to take your minor requirements or a foreign language. Although Chemistry should be your priority it is not recommended you take it in the summer10What should I register for? FallChemistryBiology, Math or PhysicsMajor requirementsFKLs

It is recommended you do not take more than 9 hours of Science and Math

Register for Chemistry, Biology, Math or Physics, Major requirements, and your FKLs. We do not recommend more than 9 hours of Science and Math at least until you are a sophomore.

11Fill in the information

In the example above the student has filled in the courses they have already taken. The remaining coursework will help balance out the students schedule. 12Worksheet Page 2

Page 1 was geared towards your past and present courses. Page 2 is designed to help you decide what you will take during the Summer and Fall that will count towards your FKL and major requirements. Look in Schedule Search for classes you are interested in taking and write them in the worksheet.

13Math Pre-requisites

The chart above should help guide you and serve as a reminder of what math course you should take. we have included the SAT and ACT minimum scores. If your scores are higher than those noted here you do not have to take them.Biology majors can take the Life Sciences Calculus as long as the prerequisites are met. Please note that you can take statistics instead of Calculus II; please make sure you take the required coursework if you are continuing your education. Some fields require Calc II while others prefer you take a statistics course.

14Where do I start? CollegeAlgebraMAC 1105

CHM 2023 (or 1 yr H.S. Chemistry)General Chemistry I & LabCHM 2045/LBiology I and LabBSC 2010/LCalculus I & IIMAC 2241/2311MAC 2242/2312

Physics IPHY 2053/L or 2048/L Pre-calculusMAC 1114 or 1147Minimum Grades needed: Math: CChemistry: CBiology: C-Physics: C-

15Algebra is the foundation of the sciences. If you have taken and passed with a C grade or better you can continue to take Gen Chem I - this class is reqd for ALL Biology concentrations. Please take the Gen Chem as soon as possible. It is ok to take your chem lec/lab separate, but they must be taken in order

Bio & physics require lectures & labs be taken together. You will need permits if you passed one part and not the other. Most Biology students will take Life Science Calc & non-calc physics

Grades needed to progress: math, & chem C; bio, & phys C-After College Algebra

After college algebra you have options:You can take pre-calc and ChemistryAfter Precal you can take calculus. Precal can take you into physics -- most students do not need to take the calculus based physics. Or on the chemistry side you can take Gen Chem I followed by Biology I. after you finish Gen Chem II you can take Organic Chem16Major Requirements

Example of the Marine Biology Concentration Requirements

This is an example of the Marine Biology Major Requirements. Degreeworks places an checkmark on classes have been completed and lists the number of credits and course number of the outstanding classes.17Degree Supporting Courses

This is an example a Microbiology student that has completed most of the degree supporting coursework.18
