HINDI SAMAJ OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Indradhanush I am pleased to send my best wishes to all members of our community attending Hindi Samajs annual cultural event, Indradhanush.

The programme offers the broader community the chance to experience Indian culture and heritage. It is also an opportunity to consider the close friendship between Australia and India. Our two countries have much in common, including democracy, the rule of law, and the English language. We also share many people-to-people links. Since 1788, Australia has been an immigrant society. Successive waves of newcomers eager for a better life, including many Indians, have enriched our culture and added a heroic dimension to our national story. I also take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of Hindi Samaj in promoting Indian culture and the teaching of Hindi in Australia. The revival of foreign language study is something the Coalition is committed to. Last year, I announced a plan to ensure that under a Coalition government at least 40 per cent of Year 12 students will study a language other than English within a decade. Please accept my warmest wishes for Indradhanush this year. I am sure everyone will have a great day. Yours sincerely

On behalf of the The University of Western Australia in our Centernary Year, I wish you well as you celebrate your annual cultural event-Indradhanush As you would be aware, Hindi is one of the top 10 languages spoken in Australia. It is also one of 80 different languages spoken on our campus by our staff and students. At UWA, we recently celebrated our Harmony Day, which coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. At UWA, we recognise that diversity-such as that on display today-contributes to the richness of life. We also recognise that valuing diversity-and enhancing cultural competence-provides us all with a very important context for our lives and our careers. More than 30 UWA students are members of Hindi Samaj of WA and many of them are participating in this fantastic celebration of Hindi culture.
