President’s Message

Hello AACEI Chinook-Calgary,

Welcome to September! Client budgets are in, kids are back in school, the year-end approaches, and projects continue to accelerate. I find it a shock every fall when I realize how quickly the previous year passed. But September also means that AACE Chinook-Calgary is kicking off a new season of programs.

I first heard of AACEI in 2008 as I shifted into the EP world. Coming from construction, my first reaction was surprise. I had been internally trained, and was very pleased to find that a technical body with a depth of knowledge and information existed that would support my new role. My own section involvement started innocently enough, a Dinner meeting here, a Skills and knowledge workshop there, but then I attended the estimating seminar in 2009 and I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to be involved. The enthusiasm was contagious.

It is my great pleasure to extend a warm welcome all the new board members, and a welcome back to the returning members. As a volunteer organization, we rely on returning members’ experience, and new members’ energy. As a parent I know ‘volunteer fatigue’ is always a danger, so thank-you in advance for your efforts for the upcoming season, and choosing to be involved with AACEI. If you are interested in becoming involved, please feel free to contact me or any one of the board members.

I would also like to thank the past board members for their service and make special thanks to Dave Williams. In recognition of Dave’s outstanding contribution, the board has established a scholarship in his name.

Our first Dinner meeting on September 19, features Dr. Janaka Ruwanpura, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Project Management Systems and the Director of the Centre for Project Management Excellence at the University of Calgary.

This year’s workshops will cover topics in greater depth, responding to your requests to go beyond the introductory level.

Within the pages of this newsletter you will find details of the upcoming technical dinner program, the Saturday skills and knowledge workshops, the winter Seminar and our 2012/2013 board of directors.

WHAT is AACEI Chinook-Calgary? The Chinook–Calgary Section of AACE Canada was founded in 1972. It currently has close to 750 members from a wide range of companies in and outside of Alberta. Our members are involved in all aspects of estimating, cost control, planning, scheduling and project management. Reservation for dinner meetings can be made by emailing Anna Tremblay at anna.tremblay@amec.com not later than the day prior to the meeting. The dinner cost is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Proof of membership is required for the discounted price. Members receive the Cost Engineering Magazine, a discount on books and publications from AACEI Headquarters and access to contents on the AACEI website.

Innovative Technological Tools and Processes for Improving Construction Productivity

Overview Construction performance and productivity improvement are key focus areas in any nation’s construction industry, since its contribution to a country’s economy is substantial; however, a decline in construction productivity across the world has been reported by many researchers and organizations. With the rising costs of building materials and a shortage of skilled labour, construction companies are looking for ways to increase efficiencies throughout their operations. Construction productivity is a complex issue involving the interaction of labor, capital, materials and equipment. Finding innovative solutions to improve construction productivity, in terms of labor and management issues, will save billions of dollars and make construction a professional and attractive business. The research project titled “Top Ten Targets for Improving Construction Productivity” at the University of Calgary has developed many innovative tools and best practices that improved tool time, productivity and worker satisfaction. This presentation will outline the research projects under three areas of green (G), management (M) and technology (T) to improve construction productivity and then will show the several examples of latest technological innovations and processes to improve communication and productivity of construction projects. i-Booth© is an on-site information kiosk designed to aid foremen in communicating work targets, technical details and expectations to the workforce. The i-Booth© can provide such information as daily and weekly productivity targets, assignments for workers or crews, special technical information, safety instructions, job site targets, weather information and 3-D models of the assigned construction work. The use of this innovative i-Booth© has resulted in improvement of tool time, productivity, worker satisfaction and job-site planning. The second-generation i-booth © has been commercialized in Canada. The presentation extends to critically discuss about the findings of few selected activity investigations conducted to analyze productivity losses through the constituent sub tasks and to propose a new template which identifies and addresses as many as possible potential productivity issues related to each activity and further facilitating implementation of activity based productivity loss prevention plan. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of establishing a new role CPIO (Construction Productivity Improvement Officer), considering the practical aspects of implementation of all the above proposed tools & techniques in the construction sites.

Speaker Profile

Professor Janaka Ruwanpura, a former US Fulbright Scholar, is a Professor and the Canada Research Chair in Project Management Systems in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Project Management Excellence at the University of Calgary and has been the Director of Project Management since 2005. He earned his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Quantity Surveying from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1992, a Master of Science in Construction Management from Arizona State University in 1997, and a Ph.D. in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Alberta in 2001.

Prof. Ruwanpura has developed many best practices and tools that have been successfully implemented in the construction industry for productivity improvement, project planning, risk management, decision analysis and sustainability. Prof. Ruwanpura commenced a major Canadian Construction Productivity Improvement research project at the University of Calgary from 2003 which developed many best practices and tools to improve productivity of construction projects. He has published over 160 technical papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He has also delivered over 100 workshops in the last 4 years to train the construction industry personnel to use the new tools and best practices developed through his research project on “Top Ten Targets for Improving Construction Productivity.” Calgary Construction Association honoured Prof. Ruwanpura with a prestigious “Industry Partnership Award” in 2012 for his contribution to Canadian Construction Industry in terms collaboration, innovation and transformation. As the Director of Project Management, he has brought several new initiatives to the program to boost teaching, training, research, internationalization and professional services. This includes offering M.Eng. programs of the University of Calgary in Asia and Middle East and developing a two-tier “Project Management Certification (PMC)” program for industry professionals. Prof. Ruwanpura has been recognized with many awards for teaching, research, service, graduate education and internationalization at the University of Calgary. In 2012, he received two other prestigious awards; Walter Shanly Award Career award in construction (Canadian Society for Civil Engineering) and Brian D. Dunfield Award (Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering) for his contributions in research, education and training. He is a licensed professional engineer in Alberta and a professional quantity surveyor in Canada and professional/chartered member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK. He is also member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering.

Execution of Mega Projects: Introduction to EPC and EPCM

The AACE’s Calgary Student Section’s Fifth Industry Talk meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 19th 2012, from 12:00 to 13:30 in Room # ENF231, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. The invited speaker is Mr. Ashok Kumar, a senior Project Manager from Hatch Ltd., and the subject for his presentation is The Execution of Mega Projects: An Introduction to EPC and EPCM. Executing industrial mega projects, such as refineries, pipelines, oil sands projects, petrochemical complex, power plants and steel mills, are a complex endeavour. Such projects include many activities, require many resources and a huge investment, take a long time to execute, and often include complex technologies. Therefore, special skills are required to execute mega projects, and engineering firms possess such skills. Among them, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) companies are the most capable, as they are specialists in project execution and technologies, have access to required tools, and have access to large and diverse levels of resources. This presentation explains typical EPC and EPCM execution strategies, and highlights their differences and commonalities. Ashok Kumar, PMP has an extensive 27 years of experience in engineering, project and construction management. He has gained considerable knowledge working in several management positions on projects up to $26 billion for world-class oil and gas refineries, mining, potash, oil sands and metal refineries. Ashok has lived and worked in a variety of countries, including India, Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia, and has established a successful track record in leading multidiscipline and multicultural project teams across the globe.
