EYE TO AAOS President’s Message: Dr. Mark Sawamura Greetings. I hope that you are able to enjoy the summer months and take some time off for a bit of relaxation. As we cross the midpoint of the year, we have had some events pass by; the Las Vegas Getaway weekend and the SCCO Senior Awards Dinner. Many of you were able to join us at these events and the AAOS Board is grateful for your participation. The Senior Awards Banquet was held at Wild- fish in Costa Mesa in Late May. This venue provided a quaint but lively environment in which the graduates of the class of 2007 and many of our member doctors were able to mingle for several hours. Two scholarships were awarded to graduating SCCO students: The Dr. Art Sugino Memorial Scholarship to Carol Shim, one of the liaisons, and the Dr. William Yamamoto Memorial Scholarship to Dennis Wong. We are proud of the their accomplishments and look forward to hearing great things about them in the future. In Las Vegas, we got a bit of a late start this year due to events booked at the host hotels. So instead of April, we held the event in June. I don’t know which is the luckier month, April or June, but maybe some of our attending docs could tell you. We also had some of the local Las Vegas OD’s join us for the first time. We are considering a change in venue and our Board will look at some possibilities for the future. As we wind down the summer, we have the annual Summer CE program in Late August at SCCO. We will also be awarding the first AAOS Rodger T. Kame Memorial Scholarship to a fourth year student at SCCO. In order to award the initial scholarship this year, the Board voted to supplement the balance needed to start the endowment out of our current funds. We have earmarked this amount and will still be taking contributions to complete the funding. Our latest and greatest project is the launching of www.asianamericanoptometricsociety.org. Dr. Greg Kame has invested a lot of time in developing the AAOS website, a project that is in its infancy and will greatly influence change the way we communicate with our membership. At the present time, we have some information about the board, AAOS scholarships and past recipients, and…. We hope to have some downloadable forms for membership as well as pho- tos, future events features, and a recognition of our society’s historical past. Thank you for con- tinued support of the society. EYE TO AAOS President’s Message: Dr. Mark Sawamura

Greetings.

The Senior Awards Banquet was held at Wild-fish in Costa Mesa in Late May. This venue provided a quaint but lively environment in which the graduates of the class of 2007 and

many of our member doctors were able to mingle for several hours.

Treasurer’s Report: Dr. Aaron Sako

Aloha again! I can’t believe it’s already summer time. Time definitely flies by! My re-port this newsletter is brief. Our balance as of July 29, 2007 is $17,428.46. Of this bal-ance $2,379.00 is our SCCO fund and $3,157.00 is in our Berkeley fund, and $3,128.00 is in our Research fund. We were able to endow the RTK fund for $25,000 this year. This is exciting news! See you all at our next event. ~Aaron

Membership Chair: Dr. Charissa Lee

This year, we’re on our way to passing the 200 member mark! We always have a good turn-out for the Summer CE program, and I’m hoping that we’ll attract even more members this year. This may be the year that we become the largest society in CA.

I’m also excited about our new website! www.AsianAmericanOptometricSociety.org (Thanks Greg!) We will soon have membership applications and the 2007 Roster available on it. Feel free to contact me if you need any membership info: [email protected]

Have a wonderful summer! ~Charissa

Recap: Las Vegas CE Getaway Weekend: June 2-3, 2007

This year, the Las Vegas CE and Golf Tournament (minus the golf tournament) was held on June 2nd & 3rd. As in past years, attendance was stellar with 33 people on Saturday and approximately 35 people on Sunday. For the first time, the AAOS made a concerted effort to invite Las Vegas based OD’s to attend. About 6 OD’s from the LV area came.

Drs. John Lee, David Tanouye and Mark Sawamura all presented hot topics in optometry. I’d like to thank them for their participation. I’d also like to thank Eyeonics, Inc. for sponsoring Dr. Tanouye’s talk and Annie Englert from AMO for making the trek all the way to Las Vegas. She gave a short but comprehensive presentation on the recall of Complete MoisturePlus.

Lastly, big thanks go to Dan Tang and Mark Sawamura for helping me with this event. ~Long

Greetings fellow AAOS members!

Hope everyone is finding time to enjoy the summer.

Thank you to everyone who attended the annual Senior awards, student/doctor mixer on May 20th. The event was held at Wild-fish Seafood Grill in Newport and the evening was filled with great food, drinks and company. We had over thirty doctors and twenty students attend! Pictures from the evening are posted on our website, so please take a look! AAOS would also like to recognize our sponsors Annie Englert and Dia Kaesman from AMO and Mylene Delmacio from TLC. We would like to thank them for their continued support!

AAOS is very proud of our scholarship recipients: Dr. Carol Shim, recipient of the Art Sugino Scholarship and Dr. Dennis Wong, recipient of the William Yamamoto Scholarship. Each recipient received $1000 and a plaque and was also recognized at SCCO’s senior honors banquet.

We will be having our annual installation banquet this winter. I’m currently looking at several different venues. If you have any ideas, please pass them my way! ~ Stacey

Hi everyone, I hope you all make time to come out to the Summer CE. I have the honor of helping to set up the catering and our Hawaiian menu is on the list once more. For those of you who do not know me, I am Steve Bae, current trustee and avid foodie. I was going through my list of recipes, and found one for NA-VAJO FRY BREAD. Unfortunately I am not able to partake of this amazing treat…. I hear it will clog your

arteries or something like that…. I am still looking for somewhat to make it healthier. But the basic recipe is as follows….

Fry Bread

4 cups flour 'blue bird' or all-purpose is okay.

1 heaping tablespoon baking powder

1-tablespoon salt

2 tablespoon powdered milk

1-2 cups very warm water

1 cup shortening

Now you need to make a dough out of this…. and things being as humid as they are now a days…maybe a little more flour. Let it set for half an hour…now take a golf ball to a racquet ball size amount of dough…and start flattening it out…like a pizza…make it about a ¼ inch thick…now you have to make a small hole in the middle (for spiritual reasons) then deep fry in oil, (the Navajo’s used shortening, Crisco…. made it taste better) until golden brown. Pat dry with paper towels…and let sit on a cooling rack.

Now you can serve this with honey and butter, cinnamon…. or make the famous Navajo taco. Put cooked ground beef with taco seasonings, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and cheese…and you have the Navajo taco….

You can also ask me about the mutton sandwich…those were good too.

Hope to see you all at the meeting.

~Steve Bae
