Celebrating 30 years of Excellence

National Reach Through Local ChaptersAAPI serves as an umbrella organization for a network of over 160 active medical associations, medical school alumni organizations, state and local chapter associations, and specialty organizations. Th ese associations are divided into 12 regions across the United States, each with a Regional Director on the AAPI Executive Commitee who responsible for communication and coordination of local events and activities.

Why AAPI?With the increase in ethnic and cultural diversity and the radical changes in healthcare in the United States, a group of concerned medical professionals founded the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin in 1982. Th e formation of the organization started as a fi reside discussion in Detriot, Michigan with a simple goal to work for a level playing fi eld for the international medical graduates.

AAPI was forged in the midst of challenges that physicians of Indian Origin have faced due to cultural barriers and bias against international medical graduates. Th ose barriers created obstacles for immigration and licensing opportunities. Today, the organization is a dynamic body, spearheading legislative agendas on healthcare and infl uencing the advancement of ethnic medical organizations.
