American Association of Retired Persons of Oklahomarecently recognized State Sen. Mike Schulz with anaward for his efforts on behalf of older Oklahomansduring the 2012 Legislative Session.AARP Oklahoma presented Schulz with the 2012Legislative Leadership Aw ard in the Senator's Ok lahomaCity office following the group's annual legislativebreakfast at the Capitol. AARP officials selected Schulzfor the award for his work on numerous bills that werecrucial to the health, safety and wellbeing of Oklahomaseniors during the 2012 session.Schulz has long been a suppo rter of increased protectionsfor Oklahoma's most frail and vulnerable citizens. Lastyear, as majority floor leader, he was instrumental inbringing several crucial long-term care bills supportedby AARP Oklahoma to a successful vote in the Senate. One of these measures, House Bill 2582, was heard inthe waning hours of session and w ould not have receiveda final vote were it not for Senator Schulz's efforts to

    A p p y N o w , W o rk T o m o rr o w !

secure final passage. That measure, ultimately signedinto law by Gov. Mary Fallin, requires future long-termcare employees undergo a nationwide, fingerprint-basedbackground check before being granted direct access toresidents of Oklahoma long-term care facilities.

"Senator Schulz understands the needs of Oklahomaseniors, and he works hard to ensure those needs aremet," said AARP Oklahoma State President MarjorieLyons. "We are grateful for his consistent and boldleadership on the issues that matter most to olderOklahomans and their families."

Six of Sen. Schulz's constituents, all of whom aremembers of the AARP Oklahoma Custer CountyChapter, were on hand for the award presentation."It is an honor to be recognized by AARP Oklahoma,"said Schulz, (R-Altus). "I'm grateful for their effortson behalf of the aging population in my district and thestate."
