‘Samarasya is Sanatana – Samanvaya is Bharateeyata’ © Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma May 2016 Volume: 2 Issue: 04 AArsha Vani (Voice of Sanatana Dharma) “bhava śakara dēśika mē śaraa‘‘Sri Sankara is a Philosopher, Yogi, Ascetic, Poet, Seer, Organizer, and Mantra Siddha (attained perfection in Mantras). He is an embodiment of Dharma, and a personification of devotion with ultimate surrender to God. Above all His boundless compassion towards mankind makes Him complete. Though He chose the path of Knowledge (Jnana) & promulgated the doctrine of Advaita (Non-Dualism), He always thought about the spiritual enlightenment of masses. For their sake, He authored vast literature of hymns that are very efficacious and wish-fulfilling, poetically aesthetic, mellifluous for chanting and philosophically profound. Composing stotras like Bhaja Govindam, Kanaka Dhara Stotram etc. demonstrate His compassion towards the mankind. He correlated the worship methods of Siva, Shakti, Vishnu, Gananatha, Surya, and Skanda by keeping the chosen deity in the center with the others around. He harmonized these different paths demonstrating that they do not conflict with each other, rather complement each other. He refined various Tamasic worship methods of vāmācāra’ and established the ‘dakṣiṇācāra’ method according to the sātvic Vedic procedures. It is because of Him that ‘Sri Vidya’ is reestablished again as a venerable mode of worship. He established four Peethams on four corners of Bharata at Puri, Sringeri, Dwaraka, Badri, and entrusted them the responsibility of propagating and protecting the Sanatana Dharma from different dogmas, doctrines, creeds and cults. Kamakoti Peetham of Kanchi is established for the same purpose of protecting and propagating Sanatana Dharma under the auspices of Sri Adi Sankara’s philosophy. It’s a dare to mention about His treatises on Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama, Brahma Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and works like Viveka Chudamani, Aparokshanubhuti etc. that are encumbered with subtle and highest truths of Vedanta. He substantiated the principle of worshipping deities to fulfill mundane desires with philosophical, scientific, and Vedic analyses. He preached the ‘Unity in Diversity’ of different Gods. Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma)

‘Sva svarupānusandhānaṁ bhakti rityabhidhīyatē’, said Sri Adi Sankara in His work Viveka Chudamani. Does this not

the praise of ordinary mortals. In one of his songs, Sri Tyagayya said, “mōksamu galadā bhuvilō jīvanmuktulu kāni vārulaku”, meaning ‘Is there salvation for those who does not become liberated from life here on this earth?’ emphasizing Viveka(discrimination) and Vairagya (dispassion). Sri Annamayya declared in his compositions, “brahmamokkaṭē para brahma mokkaṭē” meaning ‘The Supreme Para Brahman is One’ propounding the ultimate doctrine of Advaita. Both of them composed many Kritis on different Gods like Siva, Rama, Venkateswara, Narasimha etc., while at the same emphasizing the cardinal principle of Sanatana Dharma ‘Unity in Diversity’ – ‘ēkaṁ sat – viprā: bahudhā vadanti’.

KARNATAKA SIMHASANA PRATISHTAPANACHARYA

SRI SRI SRI VIDYARANYA SWAMI

avidyāraṇya kāntārē bhramatāṁ prāṇināṁ sadā । vidyāmārgōpadēṣṭāraṁ vidyāraṇyaguruṁ śrayē ॥

To souls that wander in utter dismay in the dense woods of mental ignorance,

He shows the path of true wisdom; Homage to the great Saint Vidyaranya!

Sri Sri Sri Vidyaranya Swami is culmination of Sri Veda Vyasa and Jagadguru Sri Adi Sankara. It is no exaggeration to mention that Sri Vidyaranaya is the only one after Sri Adi Sankara who attained such exalted distinction in academics and authorship. It is our minimum duty to express our gratitude reminiscing this great soul who contributed vast spiritual literature.

Sri Vidyaranya incarnated in 1267 A.D. in Ekasila city (today’s Warangal), ascended the throne of Sringeri as the 12th Jagadguru in 1331 and attained Mahasamadhi in 1386 at the ripe age of 120. Not just being the emperor of spiritual dominion, he also established the Vijayanagara empire under the commandership of Harihara Raya and Bukka Raya to counter the destruction of Sanatana Dharma by contemporary Muslim rulers. He resuscitated many temples such as Sri Rangam, Madurai etc. from attacks and restored

regular puja and other worship services. Once during famine, he prayed to Divine Mother who showered Her grace raining lots of gold. He ordained that each penny of gold rained in the palace belonged to the subjects and shall be used only for welfare of the kingdom. It is widely believed that Sri Adi Sankara Himself reincarnated as Sri Vidyaranya to protect ‘Vaidika Dharma’ from the attacks of other religious rulers. During his pilgrimage, he visited Veda Vyasa in Kasi who directed him to Badarika ashramam for initiation in ‘Sri Vidya’. Later, he revisited South India and entrusted the responsibility of completing the treatises on some portions of Veda to his brothers Madhava and Sayana, which later became popular as Madhaveeya and Sayaneeya treatises. During his short tenure of six years as the pontiff of Sringeri, he worked in association with the previous pontiff Sri Bharati Krishnaswami Teertha and made Sringeri the center to protect Sanatana Dharma. Some of his works are –

1. Sankara Vijayam – Complete life history of Sri Adi Sankara 2. Commentary on Parasara Smriti (Chief Smriti for Kali Yuga) 3. Sarva Darshana Sangraham 4. Panchadasi 5. Taittiriyaka Vidya Prakasam 6. Jivanmukti Viveka

endarō mahānubhāvulu … Vaisakha Maasa is also known as ‘Madhava Maasa’. Spiritual luminaries such as Sri Adi Sankara Bhagavatpada, Sri Vidyaranya Swami, Sri Kanchi Paramacharya etc. were born in this month. Great saint composers such as Sri

Tyagaraja and Sri Annamayya were also born in this month. These composers brought the supreme dictums of Vedanta philosophy closer to the common folklore, amalgamating devotion with fine arts such as music, dance etc. Both resented to seek

favor from kings declaring ‘nidhi cāla sukhamā rāmuni sannidhi sēva sukhamā’ - Is wealth a greater pleasure or is service in Rama's presence a greater pleasure? and ‘narahari kīrtana nānina jihva, norula nutimpaga nuḍuvadu jihva’ – the tongue that cherished the adoration of Lord shall never entertain

Quintessence of ‘Rama Rahasya

(Hanumad) Upanishad’

dūrikrta sītarti: prakaṭi krta rāma vaibhava sphūrti: dārita daśamukha kīrti: puratō mama paṭu hanumatō mūrti:

Sanaka along with many sages and Prahlada along with other devotees came to Hanuman in Kadali forest in Gandhamadana mountain. They asked Hanuman to elucidate, ‘What is the cardinal principle of ‘Oneness’ (Unity in Diversity) among all the treatises, Puranas, Smritis, Upanishads, and even attested by all the Gods including Ganapati, Surya, Siva and Shakti? What is the quintessence of this ‘Oneness’?’ Hanuman elaborated thus – ‘O Yogis, Sages and noble devotees of Vishnu! Please listen to my words which shall free the shackles of mundane and grant liberation. ‘ētēṣu caiva sarvaṁ ca tattvaṁ ca brahma tārakaṁ – ōṁ iti ēkākṣaraṁ brahma’. The supreme syllable ‘OM’ is everything. Vedas proclaim ‘Omkara is Taraka’. I’m worshipping that Taraka Brahman as ‘Rama’. ‘rāma ēva paraṁ brahma rāma ēva parama tapa: rāma ēva paraṁ tattvaṁ śrī rāmau brahma tārakaṁ’. Being – Existence – Bliss (Sat-Chit-Ananda) is nothing but rāmaṁ. Because, Pranava (OM) can’t be recited by householders, they can chant ‘Rama’. Rama Himself told once that He shall remove all fears and protect those who chant His name reminiscing this aspect about Him. There is fear only when we see something different to us. Chanting of ‘Rama’ removes this ‘Dwaita’ (different from onself) state and grants the state of ‘Advaita’ (there is no second one) i.e. liberation. Even Vighnesa, Shakti, Durga, Kshetrapaala, Surya, Chandra, Rudra, Narayana, Narasimha, Vasudeva, Varaha and all deities including Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna, Hanuman, Vibheeshana, Sugriva, Angada, Jambavan all are embodiments of

rāmabrahma and are limbs of Rama Pranava.’

nrsimha in śrti giris

Philosophy of Nrusimha is elaborated in Nrusimhatapini Upanishad. Mantras of Nrusimha connote His philosophy. ugraṁ vīraṁ mahā-viṣṇuṁ jvalantaṁ sarvatō mukhaṁ

nrsimhaṁ bhīṣaṇaṁ bhadraṁ mrtyu mrtyu namāmi One who is pleased with my prayers and grants me everlasting supreme bliss irrespective of my existence in this transient physical body, and whose army completely destroys my internal and

external enemies, that Paramatma is termed as ‘ugra’ in Vedas. ‘vīraṁ’ is that power which forms

the basis and is the root for all causes and actions in this universe. ‘mahā-viṣṇu’ means one who pervades everything and everywhere in entirety. One whose radiance diffused into all Gods and all

creatures across the entire cosmos and is the root cause for their glow is called ‘jvalantaṁ’. ‘sarvatō mukhaṁ’ describes the Form and Nature of Paramatma as mentioned in Vedas. Without senses, He can see everything, hear everything, can do anything anywhere anytime, can go anywhere, can attract anything. He rules over the worlds created by Him and at the end all these worlds merge into Him.

Hence, He is called ‘sarvatō mukha’. ‘nrsimha’ means the illustrious one among the entire creation. Just as lion lives in the caves of mountains, Narasimha lives in the heart caves of His devotees. One

whose very form terrifies the entire creation including Gods and one who does not have fear from anyone, He is called ‘bhīṣaṇaṁ’. Though He is the commander, He is also the benefactor of this entire universe, bestowing everyone with favors, virtues, riches etc.

Hence, He is ‘bhadra’. Though He is ‘Ferocious’ (Bheeshana) to Hiranyakasipu, He is ‘Benevolent’ (Bhadra) to Prahlada. Just by His

reminiscence, He wards off the danger of untimely death. He lands the self in ‘True state’ (svātma) and provides eternal bliss (Amrutatva). He is one who saves from death and grants the state of immortality. Even all the Gods worship Him. Hence, it is efficacious

to worship Him with Yagna offering sacrificial oblations. Because, He is ‘Death’ even to the God of Death, He is called ‘mrtyu mrtyu’. Prostrate, seek surrender and take refuge in that Supreme God whom even Brahma and all other Gods worship.

True worship of ‘Narasimha’ is to visualize Him in everything and everywhere. When worship is performed with this realization, He will manifest Himself instantly then and there itself and protects us from all calamities.

(August 28, 1931 – May 11, 2013) Brahmasri Samavedam Ramamurthy Sarma garu was born to the sacred couple Brahmasri

Appala Narasimha Sastry garu and Satyavati garu, who led a hermit life contending with whatever they got. They were well versed in Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and scriptures. During childhood, Ramamurthy Sarma garu overheard his parents many times discussing about Upanishads during early morning hours. Sarma garu had initial tutelage under his father and became adept in Sanskrit and Pancha Kavyas. Later, he resorted to the feet of a Guru following the typical ashrama education style in ancient Bharata and learnt many other shastras. He later graduated in Sanskrit to earn degrees such as ‘Bhaashaa Praveena’, ‘Sahitya Acharya’, ‘Purana Shastri’. He worked

at Govt. Sanskrit college. Apart from regular curriculum, he used to quote from Puranas, scriptures etc. creating comprehension, respect, and pride about the traditions and culture of India among the students. Even from his childhood, he used to recite slokas and poems while his father used to give discourses on Puranas.

Though he went to many places on his work, he finally retired and settled down at Parlakimidi. Every evening, he used to give discourses on Puranas. Apart from that, he did yeoman service establishing ‘Chaitanya Andhra Sahiti Samskriti Samiti’, which later became the earlier platform for discourses of Brahmasri Shanmukha Sarma garu. He also established a Sanskrit school and trained many students to graduate in different Sanskrit examinations. He authored over 100 books including some stotras and poetical works. Some of them are Srimad abhishtada Ramayanam – Ramayana in poetical form Sri Devi Leela Sudha – Devi Bhagavatam Ganesha Abhyudayam – Narration about Ganesha’s different incarnations Dwadasa Jyotirlinga Charitra – History of 12 Jyotirlingas Sivananda Lahari – Poetic transalation of Adi Sankara’s Sanskrit work into Telugu

Other works include Sri Shanmukha Stuti Sudhatarangini, Sri Subrahmanya Seesapadya Satakam, Subrahmanya Sakara Sahasram, Prabodha Sudhakaram, Tripura Rahasyam, Prakriti Khanda from Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Sri Rama Naama Vivarini, Sri Dhavaleswara Stotra Sudha, Dhruva Charitra, Muruga Satakam, Sri Bhagavannuti Dandakamala, Sri Venkateswara Nakshatramala, Sri Ramachandra Nakshatramala, Sri Jagannatha Stotra Sudha, Sri Hanumad Vaibhavam, Sri Ramayana Navahna Vidhi etc. He dedicated all works to his tutelary deity Sri Subrahmanya. He never attempted to publicize or popularize them. Even if someone broached about this, he maintained that they were written aspiring God’s grace only but not for public consumption. He led the life of Yogi till the last moment. In totality, his entire life is a penance. As mentioned in Sri Lakshmi Sahasram ‘śaradā śara sandhāna’, Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu is the sharp arrow released from the ‘Sharada’ bow of Sri Ramamurty Sarma garu. – SVSN Sarma.

śiva jñānaṁ – Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

Philosophy of Siva liṅga

Part 7 1

Formless and limbless auspicious true reality that has inclination towards universe, is the Linga form. The supreme Lord Siva is formless (attributeless) as well as an embodiment of form (one with attributes). Devoid of any elements, Siva is the form of Linga. With all the elements, Siva took infinite benevolent divine forms such as Gangadhara, Chandrasekhara, Neelakantha, Trisuladhari, Nagaabharana, Kruttivasa, Samba Sadasiva, Mrityunjaya etc. Both forms – with and without attributes – are worthy of worship. 1. brahmaṁ jyōti svarūpanca 2. bhakta anugraha vigraham.

2. Linga form connotes that Siva is the embodiment of the effulgent Brahman.

3. One of the meanings of ‘Linga’ is ‘sign or symbol’. Because, this is worshipped as a

4. representation of the supreme Lord, it connotes the meaning ‘Linga’.

5. Since times immemorial, this worship of Siva Linga is being performed by all classes –

6. celestials, humans and demons. Lack of either beginning or end is indicated by Siva Linga. Darkness of ignorance is destroyed

by worshipping the Linga which has the characteristics of radiance.

‘brahmēṣṭaṁ śaraṇamupagamya’ – As mentioned in Srutis, true ‘pleasure’ is the supreme Brahman Sankara. Vedas

proclaim to surrender unto Him. Siva Linga is that brilliance of Brahman which is the basis for illumination of Sun and entire

other galaxies. Real nature of Siva Linga is profound and astonishing,

7. Siva Linga is surrounded by the Paanavattam (base or trench part). This is the pedestal for the Linga. This symbolizes the

energy of nature. Siva Linga, encompassed by Paanavattam, indicates this ‘Arthanareeswara’ (Siva and Parvati conjoined

half and half) philosophy. Hymn goes as ‘Aryaavaamaanga’ (Parvati on the left side).

‘pādōsya viśvābhūtāni tripādasyāmrtaṁ divi’ – Siva manifests only by the touch of Shakti. ‘viśvābhūtāni’ – means

nature. That portion of Linga in contact with pedestal representing Nature is the eternal reality surrounded by illusion

(Maayaamaya). The portion above that is the eternal reality beyond the illusion (Maayaateeta). Because of the contact with

nature, He became the Lord involved in the universe. (To be continued…)

Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma Garu in Sringeri With the divine blessings of Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Maha Swami and Sri Sri Sri Vidusekhara Bharati Maha Swami, Pravachana

Yagna on ‘Siva Parvati Kalyanam – Siva Shakti Vaibhavam’ was done by Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu in the holy,

austere and sacred center of Sringeri from March 28 to April 1, 2016. Sri Samavedam garu described the grandeur of Sringeri and

severe penance of Sage Rishyasringa among others. As the very first Dakshinamnaya Sharada Peetham instituted by Jagadguru Sri Adi

Sankaracharya, this Peetham made enormous contributions to the propagation and protection of Sanatana Dharma. Efficacy of Sringeri

permeated even to surrounding animals creating cordiality and harmony among them shedding their natural enmity. Sri Adi Sankara

appointed Sri Sri Sri Sureswaracharya as the first Peethadhipati of Sringeri. Sri Sarma garu also explained about the efforts of kings of

Vijayanagara to renovate all the temples in Sringeri as guided by their Guru Sage Vidyaranya. Sri Adi Sankara established Kalabhairava

on East, Durgamba on South, Anjaneya Swami on West and Kalika Devi on North as the Guardians of the pilgrimage center. Sri Guruvu

garu exalted the austerity and penance of Jagadgurus Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Swami Maha Swami and Sri Sri Sri Vidusekhara Bharati

Maha Swami from the hoary Guru lineage in safeguarding the Sanatana Dharma.

Sri Samavedam’s pravachanam on ‘Siva Parvati Kalyana Vaibhavamu’ was very hearty. It was amalgamated with episodes from

Kalidasa’s ‘Kumara Sambhavam’,

Veda Vyasa’s ‘Siva Puranam’ and

many other works. Noteworthy

feature of this is the occurrence of last

day’s pravachanam on the episode of

‘Siva Kalyanam’ in the direct presence

of Jagadgurus Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha

Maha Swami and Sri Sri Sri

Vidusekhara Bharati Maha Swami in

Guru Nivas, Narasimhavana. Sri

Jagadgurus were present during the

entire pravachanam duration of

around one and a half hour.

Sri Samavedam garu mentioned that

it is a dare to discourse in front of

Jagadgurus where the prescribed stipulation is only to listen with rapt attention. He said that it is only due to the holistic causeless

grace of the Jagadgurus, who are also venerated as ‘Divine Mother’, made this possible.

Afterwards, Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Maha Swami delivered His speech of benediction. Sri Jagadguru recalled the beneficence

of Sage Veda Vyasa to the mankind authoring Eighteen Puranas. He directed everyone to aim at understanding the philosophy of

‘Supreme Brahman’. Articulating the significance of Puranas, Sri Jagadguru mentioned that Puranas emphasize the doctrines laid out

in Vedas. He enunciated that Puranas and Itihasas are definite aids for those who can’t directly read or comprehend Vedas. He blessed

Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu for delivering these Puranas in lucid and simple style for the benefit of common

folklore. He applauded Sri Guruvu garu’s discourse as ‘Ramaneeyam’ (that which sheds new shade of melody and beauty at every

moment) and said that this talent is the gift of God due to the merits of previous births. He also had note of appreciation for the

following Sri Samavedam garu has even in non-Telugu speaking states. Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Maha Swami pronounced His

complete benedictions on Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu. – KBR Murty.
