This test is used to measure the quality of concrete by velocity of
ultrasonic pulse. The velocities are affected by composition of
Concrete, Presence of Cracks, Voids & Other Imperfections that
affect the quality of concrete. On structures correlation of
velocity with strength is used to estimate the compressive
strength of concrete in the structural element.
Ultrasonic Pulse velocity Test
Rebound Hammer Test
This test measures the surface hardness of concrete. For new
structures, the hardness reading is used to co-relate the
strength of concrete. The hammer has to be used normal to the
test surface, vertically (up or down) or horizontally depending on
the structural element.
Half cell potential Test
When the cover concrete is carbonated the process of corrosion
enhances due to the reduction in the alkalinity surrounding the
reinforcement bars. The estimation of carbonation depth thus
helps in predicting the period of protection from corrosion.
Core cutting and compression testing
75mm or 100mm diameter cores are taken on site using state of
the art core cutting machines. Cover meter is used to locate the
reinforcement steel before core cutting. This prevents structural
damage to the RCC member by avoiding the reinforcement.
These cores are dressed in our lab and tested using standard
compression testing methods to determine compressive
strength and arrive at equivalent cube strength of concrete.
This method is used to assess reinforcement bar diameter and
spacing of main bars and stirrups. For new structures it can be
used to determine the exact usage of steel. In old buildings this is
used to gather information on the reinforcement, not available or
otherwise. This information is then used to prepare the structural
drawings as constructed.

Pile Integrity Test
Pile integrity test is used to assess the continuity of piles. With
this test, necking or bulging and uniformity of quality of concrete
is checked. Piles that are doubtful for integrity are taken up for
Dynamic load testing along with some piles which are ok.

Carbonation Test
Half cell potential test determines the probability of corrosion
activity taking place at the point in the Reinforcement. A higher
probability means more chances of corrosion. This test
measures the probability and not the extend of corrosion.

Drawing preparation
Structural Testing Services
Used extensively in preparation of as built drawings, these
instruments have a typical range of 50 meters with an accuracy
of few mm. With specially fabricated jigs, measurements of high
beams up to 30 meter level can also be taken. These
measurement readings are plotted to prepare as built drawings
of structures.
Distance Measurement
Reinforcement Location
Using Reinforcement locators, site engineer can quickly
distinguish between structural and non structural elements.
This information is very useful to prepare as built structural and
architectural drawings.
Endoscopic Inspection
Designed to capture and measure the frequency of sound
generated by a surface under impact of a hammer, this test
indicates hollowness or problems in bonding of underlying
surfaces. Typical examples include assessing the soundness of
cover and plaster of slabs, porches, chajjas etc.
Using standard thickness measurement devices, crack width is
measured either one time or over a period of time say, 6 months,
specially fabricated devices ensure that measurements are
taken exactly at the same place again and again for plotting
historical trends. ideal for structural designers to check
progressive development of cracks, this is an quick, low cost
method.
Crack Width Measurement
Impact Sound Test
Ideal for inspection in false ceilings, crevices and other difficult
to inspect areas, this computer based system is designed to
capture still photos and videos of the hidden surface. Ideal to
capture spalling above false ceilings during inspection and other
applications, this test is a critical test

Conforming to IS 256:2000, these tests are designed to
measure the PH value of concrete and determination of
sulphates and chloride content in concrete. Samples collected
on site are transported to the laboratory for further processing.
Chloride Profile Test
Using sophisticated onsite and laboratory methods, the
chloride content is plotted against depth. This gives an
indication of the extent of chloride content across the structural
member.

Sakivihar road,
Conducted over a period of 72 hours, this test confirms to IS
456.:2000 clause 17.6 An elaborate system of cables and dial-
gauges ensures that the test is rapid, does not require any special
construction (like columns) to be done and is done with available
material at site (sand bags).
Slab Load Test
Moisture Content
Measuring the moisture content in elements like timber and plaster,
this tests indicates the quality of the material especially after ageing
over a long number of years.
Temperature Sensor
Designed to detect surface welds, the test generates patterns that
are photographed for reference. Ideal for key welds where defects are
visible to the naked eye, this is a quick test applicable for steel
structures.

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge
Recommended for most of the steel structures, the thickness
measured is compared with the standard section thicknesses. A
reduction is measured in percentage.
Measuring temperature over a period of time and capable of logging
this data to a central server, this measures the ambient temperature at
the site. Ideal for checking effects of temperature on the casting of
concrete, this data helps the site engineer to control the environment
to ensure good quality of concrete.

Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge over coatings
Normally, steel thickness gauges do not measure thickness over
coatings. Using the latest globally available instrumentation
technology, this test measures the steel thickness from upto 20 mm
of coatings and underwater, making it the ideal choice for marine
applications and industrial applications.
Magnetic Particle Test
Designed to detect sub surface welding defects, the test generates
patterns that are photographed for reference. Ideal for key welds

Pile dynamic test is used to assess the load bearing capacity of the
pile. This test uses a hammer of a couple of tons to drop on the pile.
Displacements are measured using a high tech instrument. This data
is processed to arrive at the pile dynamic load bearing capacity as per
IS-2911 (part-1 section-1).This test is easy to conduct and requires
very few site arrangements
Verticality Check
Stability Check
Designed to check the verticality of the structure, using standard
plum and distance measuring devices, this test uses sophisticated
instruments to compare the verticality to the acceptable levels as per
national building code.
Slab Deflection Test
Using a system of weights and calibrated scales, the slab deflection is
measured at the ends, middle and midpoints. The results of the
deflection are then compared with the national building codes for
checking acceptable limits.

How often have we observed that RMC cube results pass
yet, strength of in-situ cast concrete members is as low as
20%? It is a mistaken assurance that using ready mix
concrete (RMC) solves the problem thinking that concrete
quality is assured. RMC only assures the raw material
strength (concrete). While casting on site, due to
variations like time of casting, workability, compaction,
curing etc, strength differs significantly. Just raw material
testing (concrete quality testing by crushing cubes to
ascertain strength) may not result in similar strengths in
the structural elements like beams, slabs and columns.
Studies show strength variation from 20% to 100%. This
huge variance is simply not acceptable in today’s modern
quality conscious age.
Current Practises.
QA is either done by Executing Agency or PMC. If in scope
of executing agency, it is a mere formality and does not
produce the desired quality assurance. PMC is usually not
a subject expert in concrete quality and have their own set
of primary activities defined.
Stability Certification by Structural designer is based on
either an assumption that in-situ concrete quality in as per
design or could is based on random testing of the
structure. Usually, when problems are noticed, sample
testing is done, projects are stalled and detailed
investigation are carried out.
Proven return on investments by savingcosts and time.
Applicable for high strength concrete, high rise structures too.
Implement for new and rehabilitation projects.
Can be introduced at any stage of RCC work.
Comprehensive 3 tier quality assurance program.
Analyzing the causes
Aaryan SQ process for Safety
Assured returns on investment:
Introduction in new and on going projects
For a very small drop in density, the strength drops by
exponentially. Another factor affecting the strength is curing
process. These 2 causes combined, cause a dramatic drop in
concrete strength.
Aaryan SQA process focuses on the structural safety aspect
and an independent third party methodology. With reporting
directly to the customer and designer, the key stakeholders in
the project get a true picture of the status periodically. SQA
assures STRUCTURAL designer of the structural quality. The
end user is assured of long life and quality of structure.
With SQA, over-design can be reduced safely to an extent,
lowering costs. This is with an assurance that the in-situ
concrete strength now matches very closely to the design
strength. Costs are very affordable , Typically 1%-2% of RCC
construction costs and in the range of 0.2% of the project cost.
As SQA goes in parallel to the construction, there is no
slowdown in work. On the contrary, an early warning system
saves time, by allowing you to take corrective action
immediately and preventing the project from being stalled. A
defined ROI is realized by Design optimization and no loss of
schedule. This recovers SQA investments multifold.
For new projects in contract drafting stage, SQA can be made
a part of the planning and contract document itself. For
existing projects, SQA can be introduced at any stage of the
project.
SQA is widely used in Third Party Inspection (TPI) for commercial and residential structures
including buildings, factories, power plants, irrigation structures etc. A three tier, customized
audit covers the entire scope of RCC works in new and rehabilitation projects.
Background:
Rise of the high rise structures.
With high rise structures in the vogue, using higher
strength of concrete (upto M80-M100 grade) at times in
design, the on site quality assurance assumes a very
significant role.
Structural Quality Audit (SQA)Assuring in-situ strength
in RCC structures.
Primary role is adhering to the quality manual and following the process on a day to day basis
The agency follows laid down standards for material procurement and execution of work.
The process given below highlights the key steps taken during various stages of the project
and the agencies responsible for implementing them.
The remedial measures given below are typical (not exhaustive) in nature and indicate the
types of common methods uses for remedies to enhance in-situ strength in concrete.
Recommended for low strenght and compaction related problems. Typically used for 20-
30% lower strengths. Vaccum grouting is recommended for high strength concrete.
Carries out regular audits of quality of work being excecuted by the executing agency.
Check the testing facility setup on site, Perform periodic quality checks using Non
destructive tests at site. Prepare and submit report in specified format. Co-relate site tests
with cube results for comparison. Perform surprise checks at site. Report results. Submit
copy of the structural testing to the Structural designer periodically.
Preparation of quality control manual, defining specific formats and detailed methods.
Along with the RCC designer, arrive at the best techo commercial method to undertake
repairs.
Specialized structural repair contractors are engaged to repair the structure. This ensures
that correct material and procedure are implemented by experts to get close to desired
results.
Using NDT methods, test the structural parts again to assure quality. This step assures the
effectiveness of the repair methods implemented on site.
Submit final quality assurance report to the Customer and Structural Designer.
Inspects, conducts relevant tests to ensure compliance by the execution agency on a day to
day basis. This is to ensure the compliance of day quality standards.

Recommended where grouting may not give desired results. However, this results in
increase in member sizes, which may not be aesthetically appealing.
Jacketing
Extended curing by studying mix properties. This simple method sometimes yields dramatic
results.
Curing
Where low strength can not be rectified by any of the above methods, demolition may be
carried out. Usually as the last resort, as it directly affects the project timelines. Demolition
and recasting may not guarantee desired strength as it is again subject to site conditions.
