WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

So You Can Share, of Course

In the event that you need to share or exchange bridge models with other stakeholders or add files to a different data storage system, the BrR Import/Export functions allow you to accomplish this. Having a method of sharing these models can be very advantageous and the files can typically be sent using normal delivery methods, such as email or web-based file sharing. Below are just a few scenarios where this function can be utilized:

• The bridge owner can export an existing bridge model and send it to a consultant who has been contracted to produce bridge rehabilitation plans. The consultant can then import the model and potentially use parts of it for their analysis of the new proposed rehabilitated structure. Once the final structure plans have been developed, the proposed structure model can be sent back to the bridge owner.

• If the bridge owner has their own administrative storage system, bridge models can be exported and filed along with plans, photos, and other structure information.

• If a bridge changes ownership, the previous owner can export the bridge model and send it to the new owner.

EXPORTING

Expor ting One or More Bridges from the Bridge Explorer

As shown in the graphics on the following pages, you need only:

• Select the bridge model or models that you wish to export,

• Select File>Batch Export from the main menu

• In the resulting Batch Export Dialog, just click on the OK

• Select where to put the export(s)

• Click on Export

• Observe the progress information

• If the export did not succeed, check the log, correct the problem(s) and redo

• DONE!

To work along with the example, just pick any bridge(s) in your Explorer

BrR will now show you the batch Export dialogue:

You will be asked where to put the exported files before the operation will execute. Send your export(s) to

the DESKTOP (ignore the destination in the example – you can’t go there).

So here are the resulting xml files in the indicated destination:

Observe that BrR has decided on the file names for you. The format (BID-dash-SFN) is hard-wired and there is no way to change it. So, if you want a different format, you will have to manually rename the xmls.

Expor ting a Single Bridge from the Bridge Workspace

You can export a bridge that is open in the Bridge Workspace. There are a few less steps and even though you do not get a progress bar or an activity log, you do get the privilege of naming it how you wish. Here is a synopsis of the process:

• Open the model you wish to export in the bridge workspace

• From the main menu bar, select File>Export

• In the resulting “Save As” dialogue, select the location, provide a file name, and select OK

• DONE!

• Check that the export was successful by seeing if the xml is now in the desired location

And… here are the graphics:

Next, make sure the workspace is active and select Export from the File menu:

BrR will next ask you to provide a file name and path (next page)

Once you have finished with the Save As screen, BrR will do the export.

You will not see any progress

bars, activity logs or other

notification as to the export’s

success or failure.

You will, however, get a

Windows message if you are

trying to save to a location for

which you do not have

permission or if you are using a

file name that already exists in

the selected location.

At this point in the exercise, you should check to see if the xml made it to your desktop:

Administrative Protocol

Every office that does load analysis most likely has their own rules for record keeping, especially for the documentation behind official rating results and any required posting. The xml of the actual BrR model upon which a formal rating (e.g. the ODOT BR-100) is based should always be a part of those records.

IMPORTING

BrR will not import a bridge with a Bridge ID (SFN) that is already in its database. In order to

be able to edit the xml’s bridge ID, do the single bridge import as described below in the next

section.

Impor ting a Single Bridge

For this exercise, you will be importing the bridge that was used for the pre-stressed

box beam training. Just follow these steps:

From the main menu, select File>Import

In the resulting Open dialogue window, navigate to O:\BRIDGES\AASHTOWare

BrR Training\XMLs to Import. Select the file 1900765_TRAIN.xml. Click on the Open button to close the dialogue and initiate the import.

BrR will now open (but not save) the import in the Bridge Workspace and present the main screen for the bridge.

Importing an xml via this process allows the file to be viewed and edited in the workspace.

You will need to save it manually, though. BrR will tell you if the Bridge ID (SFN) needs to be

changed for it to be unique (and therefore savable) and will leave the workspace open to

allow you to do so.

Optional: Check Your PSBB Model

If you wish to check your PSBB training model against the original, you may now do so. Yes, you can have

more than one workspace open at the same time. The hard part can be telling which sub-item screen belongs to which model.
